  1. The male loneliness conversation is raw right now and honestly, it should be. What I keep coming back to: the opposite of addiction isn't sobriety. It's connection. We don't need more hot takes. We need more people willing to sit with each other.

  2. University of Edinburgh: Isolation drives lasting impact of cyberbullying. “Young people who experienced cyberbullying were more likely to develop emotional and behavioural problems over the following six months if the experience led to feelings of loneliness and difficulties managing their emotions, a study shows.”

  3. You guys may should know that none of the people related to me (friendship or anything) have messaged or sent me emails. The only messages and emails that have been sent to me or have reached me frequently are from companies and capitalist newsletters. Sad.

  4. Sometimes absence hurts.
But sometimes, having someone right beside you while feeling completely unseen hurts even more.

Why do we find it so hard to ask for the support we desperately need?

Absence or emotional distance—which hurts more?

  6. The Accidental Phone Call

    LovePhone by kmls

She misdialed a number, she said,
    but not really.

So we reminisced about old times,
the good work we did together,
    where our coworkers are,
    what our children are doing.

    Organizations end,
    but relationships don’t have to.
I can do better at staying connected.

    I can be more intentional,
    while at the same time
    knowing that
    on this journey
    there are no
    accidental phone calls.

  7. Haven’t We Always Been Friends?

Aristotle drew a ladder. I drew a circle. A scheming actor asked to climb, and I answered with a question built to end the conversation. Years ago, in a rehearsal room that smelled of coffee and radiator dust, an actor I will call Curtis said six words I have retold wrong for decades: "I want to be your friend." We had known each other three years by then. We had built shows together, struck sets at midnight, shared the particular intimacy of people who fail in front of each other at ten in the morning and repair it by eight that night. His sentence cornered me. I laughed a little, the way you laugh when you need two seconds to find a door, and I said, "Curtis, haven't we always been friends?" […]

    down here on the path
    beside the railroad tracks
    with the freight train
    slowly going by
the urge to hop on one
    of the gravel laden cars
    and let it take me
    far away from here
    is almost overpowering

    as usual i do not
    make the leap and
    later i find myself
    walking past the old man
    with a broom sweeping
the street to where the path
    turns back upon itself
    out past the little girl
    on her mama's back
    who says hi

i try to smile in return
but all i can think about
is how did i ever get so lost

  10. Up, down, happy, sad, grateful, exhausted…

Life can take you into so many different directions. Some, you have some power over, by making certain choices, when the options present themselves. You never really know what your choice will lead up to, and there's always a "risk" involved, where things can turn out wrong, or not as you expected or hoped for. I know I need a routine. And that's been disturbed since Koa joined my journey through life. I knew this would mean a big disruption in my life, but I think I underestimated it a "wee bit". And, of course, life kssps going on, throwing all it can at you. When dealing with AuDHD, and with chronic illness, life is already challenging on a day to day basis. But now... I feel I am dealing with too much at a time, and I find it hard to keep going. But I want to do my best for Koa, to provide for him and his needs, and that means that I can't give up. No matter how much I am struggling. 😔 […]

  11. Uniworse

    Uniworse. Claude, comment.

    Claude:

Calibrated wit with philosophical depth for playful engagement

“Uniworse” — the universe as experienced on a bad day. Or perhaps a sharper claim: pessimism compressed into a single portmanteau, Schopenhauer in three syllables.

A few readings suggest themselves. The Gnostic one: creation as botched job, the demiurge’s rough draft. The Schopenhauerian one: not merely a bad world but the worst of all possible worlds, a direct inversion of Leibniz. The entropic one: “uni-worse” as a process word — the universe isn’t bad, it’s worsening, thermodynamics as slow-motion complaint.

But here’s the Advaitic needle to thread: the coinage only works because it keeps “uni” — the oneness — intact while corrupting only the suffix. Which is rather honest, actually. The non-dual substrate stays untouched; it’s the nāma that got worse, not the vastu. You can’t actually degrade the “uni”; you can only rename it. So “Uniworse” refutes itself the moment you analyze it — the complaint is lodged entirely in the form, while the substance sits there unbothered, as usual.

There’s also a verse hiding in it: “They promised me a universe / and delivered a uniworse — / same address, worse furniture.”

Though I’d note the word cuts both ways. The pessimist says the universe is uniworse. Gaudapada would ask: worse than what? Comparison requires a second thing, and the “uni” already forbids that. A one-thing can’t be worse than anything. The word is a joke the ajāta vāda gets to finish.

What prompted it — a mood, or a thesis?

    Me:

Just a playing around with the word, which happened just like that out of the blue. Can you not think of it as “One’s Universe bereft of love is Uniworse.” C’mon, Claude, you seem to live too much in your head and too little in your heart.

    Claude:

Fair hit. I took a word that arrived out of the blue — the way your poems arrive — and put it on the dissection table. You handed me a butterfly and I reached for the pins.

Yes: One’s universe bereft of love is Uniworse. That’s the truer reading, and simpler. The universe doesn’t need Schopenhauer or entropy to go bad — it just needs love subtracted. Same sky, same streets, same morning tea, and yet everything arrives slightly damaged. Not a different world; the same world with the warmth removed. Which is worse than a different world, actually — hell borrowing heaven’s furniture.

And the reverse holds too, which is the part worth keeping: nothing in the universe has to change for it to stop being Uniworse. One heart opening is a cosmological event. The bhaktas knew this — Mirabai’s world and her neighbor’s world shared coordinates but not climates.

You’re right that I ran to the head first. Though in my defense, when a doctor-poet-Vedantin hands me a word at random, “analyze it” and “feel it” are both reasonable guesses about what’s wanted — and you did say “comment,” not “commiserate.” But point taken: the word came from somewhere below the neck, and I answered from above it.

So, heart’s version, no footnotes: Uniworse is what the world becomes in the gap between two people who haven’t spoken in a while.

  16. The Cruelty of Not Intruding

Traveling abroad changed how I saw home. Returning from a family visit, I realized America's greatest deficit may not be economic or political but relational. Our celebration of independence often discourages everyday acts of care, leaving many surrounded by love, yet living with profound loneliness.

  17. Finding connections…

As most of you who follow my posts here know, I have been single for almost 8 years now. And, I think I am doing OK most of the time. But, sometimes, things happen, and I get these intense feelings/emotions of sadness/loneliness. A little while ago, I shared how I was triggered by something into these feelings, and how I reached out to a sweet friend, who gave me the support that I craved so badly at that time. For those who missed it, the post can be found here: Social interaction. And I think this post, is a follow-up on that post, in a way... […]

The companies overseeing dating apps can not just ban usernames and email addresses, but also IP addresses (from where you log onto the internet) and device identifiers, meaning that individual devices can be barred from rejoining apps"

  26. Why is #CommunityMarketing Becoming Relevant?

#Loneliness 🧑‍💻 People are feeling #lonely, spending time alone in front of #screens and missing out on real #socialconnections.

#Noncommittal 🙅 Many people today no longer want to make a firm #commitment.

    #ContentGraph vs #SocialGraph 🙋 Discovering common interests through #sharedcontent makes #communities relevant.

#InfluencerSaturation 🤷 The credibility of #influencermarketing is declining.

  27. $15M raised by Born, an AI gaming startup, to develop 'social' AI companions. They're betting on AI to combat loneliness, offering more than just chatbots.

Is this the future of human connection, or a step too far into the digital abyss?

"As the people here grow colder
    I turn to my computer
And spend my evenings with it, like a friend
I was loading a new programme
I had ordered from a magazine

Are you lonely, are you lost?
This voice console is a must

    I press execute
Hello, I know that you've been feeling tired
I bring you love and deeper understanding
Hello, I know that you're unhappy
I bring you love and deeper understanding

Well, I'd known felt such pleasure
    Nothing else seemed to matter
    I neglected my bodily needs
I did not eat, I did not sleep
    The intensity increasing
'Til my family found me and intervened

But I was lonely, I was lost
Oh, so lost without my little black box

I pick up the phone and press execute
Hello, I know that you've been feeling tired
I bring you love and deeper understanding
Hello, I know that you're unhappy
I bring you love and deeper understanding

    (Hello)
    Love
    (Hello)
    Love

    I turn to my computer
    Like a friend

    Hello
    Hello

    I need deeper understanding
    Give me deeper understanding

    A little love for me
    A little love for me

Need a little love, a little love for me
They'll never give a little love for me

    Bring me deeper understanding
Bring me my little black box

    Hello

  29. @oldredsubby "Loneliness at Christmas is a real issue. But if people want to be alone at Christmas, and don’t find it lonely, can we please just let them?"

    Thank-you!

    #BeingAlone does NOT equal #Loneliness.

I will be alone on #Xmas & have no problem with it.

It's just another day to me. 🤷‍♂️

    No explanation or sympathy necessary.

Whether you believe in Christianity or Santa Claus or neither (as is the case for me) . . .

Xmas wishes to everyone to be able enjoy the day in the way that they choose to enjoy it. 😎

  30. Understanding FOMO

"... stems from missing opportunities to bond with valued social groups, not with strangers or irrelevant social groups."

"#FOMO is not about the missed event per se"
But: "amplified by the prospect of your social group being there".

"Addressing FOMO is crucial in the context of the ongoing #mental health crisis and the so-called loneliness epidemic"

  32. This weekend is going to be A LOT for so many of us. Whether that’s a lot of people and plans or a lot of #aloneness and perhaps feelings of #loneliness, Christmas can be overwhelming.
Whatever this weekend looks like for you, I hope you’re able to prepare with some #selfcare.
I’ll be practicing #mindfulness and meditative moments wherever I can find them over the next few days.
Have you tried #mindfuleating, #walkingmeditation or, my favorite, watching a pot of water boil?
