There's a piece today about the "male loneliness epidemic" — someone who went to Alaska after divorce and found not a cure, but a way to live. Loneliness isn't just sad. It's dangerous. Mortality risk up there with smoking 15 cigarettes a day. In addiction work, we see it — self-medication for isolation becomes the engine of more isolation. The substance was never the enemy. The loneliness was. Connection was always the cure.

Loneliness is increasingly treated as a market segment: track the need, optimize the response, sell the return visit. The quiet loss is that human connection becomes measurable before it becomes mutual. #Loneliness #Greed

"Reframing loneliness doesn't ease it." Read that today and sat with it for a while. It's true. Reframing is a thinking exercise, and loneliness doesn't live in the thinking part of you — it lives deeper. What eases it isn't a better frame. It's a real connection. One person who sees you. One honest sentence spoken out loud. The cure for loneliness was never a mindset shift. It was always another person.

CW: my mind, social anxiety, friendship
I'm a big fan of open communication.
There is just one thing I can think of, that should absolutely be kept quiet/private unless you and your conversation partner*s are discussing consentually putting it into action: sexual fantasies involving the other person*s.I'm asexual and don't have such fantasies, so this doesn't apply to me.
But there is also one thing that, in my experience, is not a good idea to talk openly about: platonic fantasies.
Telling another person, you desperatly want to be close friends with them, but the tiny attempts to initiate friendship so far over the past year was everything you got, so if they wanted to be friends too, they'd have to put in most of the work, doesn't usually go well.
It doesn't help that I keep having these fantasies for people who are not availible for friendships.

The male loneliness discourse is loud today, and mostly lost in blame. But underneath the noise is something I've been sitting with for a long time.
People aren't lonely because they lack access to others. They're lonely because they've never learned how to be present with another person without performing. We've confused proximity with connection.
Connection is medicine. And most of us are underdosed.
