Canada #WildfireSmoke to be a periodic problem into August across #Midwest, #Northeast
Prevailing winds will direct more wildfire smoke from western #Ontario into the Midwest and Northeast often well into August. Needed rain to put out the fires may be scarce.
By Alex Sosnowski, Jul 20, 2026
Excerpt: " Hundreds of large wildfires are burning across Canada and the United States.
"There are 809 active #wildfires in #Canada, according to the Canadian Wildland Fire Information System. To date this year, there have been 3,575 fires that have burned 2.7 million hectares.
"Even more fires have burned across the #US. 'So far this year, 40,771 fires have burned more than 3.9 million acres across the United States,' according to the (U.S.) National Interagency Fire Center newsroom. 'Fires in the Northwest and the fires in northern Minnesota pose the greatest demand for firefighting resources. Resource assignments are being prioritized based on life and property risk, operational impact, and probability of success.' "

The #smoke is spreading so widely because the same #HeatDome that has led to brutally high temperatures in the #Midwest & the #Northeast has trapped the smoke close to the ground. By the weekend, as another weather system pushes the hottest #air away, the #heat & the smoke are expected to ease in the Northeast, forecasters said. Do-It-Yourself #AirCleaners: Making Cleaner Air More Accessible
Published September 6, 2023
"Everyone should have the right to breathe clean air. However, during wildfires, the cost and availability of clean air technologies and reliable power sources can create challenges for people trying to protect their health from wildfire smoke. Recognizing these barriers, EPA and other health, environmental, and nonprofit organizations have provided instructions and materials for creating do-it-yourself (#DIY) air cleaners. DIY air cleaners are a more affordable and accessible alternative to commercial versions and can be constructed using a box fan and a high-efficiency home air filter. Securing the filter to the fan creates an effective, simple air cleaning system.
"This DIY solution filters out smoke particles and improves indoor air quality, but its use has raised key questions about the devices’ safety and effectiveness. EPA scientists and their colleagues are conducting research to answer these questions.
" 'This research was highly anticipated, particularly by EPA’s western regions, who have suffered from terrible wildfire smoke for years without the ability to recommend more affordable air filtering options to the public,' noted Meredith Bauer, Assistant Director of EPA Region 9’s Air and Radiation Division. 'It is important that we develop tools that allow everyone to protect themselves and their families when wildfire smoke is in the air.' "

#AirQuality plummets in #Boston, #Toronto as thick wildfire smoke shrouds the sky for millions
Smoke from wildfires burning in Ontario have caused air quality to reach unhealthy levels across #Canada, and the northeastern and midwestern United States. And it could get worse before conditions improve.
By Brian Lada, Jul 15, 2026
Excerpt: "Toronto had some of the worst air quality in North America on Wednesday morning, reaching 'very unhealthy' levels with an AQI of 220. 'Health effects will be immediately felt by sensitive groups and should avoid outdoor activity,' Plume Labs said. 'Healthy individuals are likely to experience difficulty breathing and throat irritation.'
"In Boston, air quality reached 'unhealthy' conditions on Wednesday morning with an AQI of 147. Little improvement is expected in the city into Thursday. "

Ayuh... And my friends with asthma are stuck indoors. Be safe friends!
#Wildfire Smoke Spreads Across the #Northeast as Temperatures Spike
A heat dome is responsible for miserably high temperatures, and it’s also helping to push smoke from wildfires to the east.
By Judson Jones and Mark Walker
July 15, 2026"From the windows of office buildings across Manhattan, the blue sky turned hazy on Tuesday as wildfire smoke from #Canada and the #GreatLakes slipped across the Northeast, prompting alerts in some places about poor air quality.
"The haze is expected to continue on Wednesday, and even to worsen in some places, as the same heat dome that is pushing temperatures close to 100 degrees across much of eastern Canada and the United States traps the smoke from faraway wildfires close to the ground.
"In New York, city officials warned of 'the possibility of deteriorating air quality' throughout the day Wednesday, but noted that even the most severe forecasts for did not approach the levels seen in 2023, when the Canadian wildfire smoke sent the city’s air quality index surging to dangerous levels. Still, they said, echoing the warnings of officials across the region, people with health conditions that make them sensitive to polluted air should take caution.
"The heat dome, an area of high pressure in the atmosphere, was visible on satellite imagery on Tuesday as an area of clear sky over the middle of the country, where the surrounding air moves clockwise. On the ground, it manifests as a hot, humid and smoky stew that can make just stepping outdoors an unpleasant task.
"Across much of the United States and southern Canada, weather officials have placed tens of millions of people under heat warnings, with high temperatures from the upper 90s to above 100 degrees expected in many places on Wednesday."The National Weather Service said that nearly 100 million people from the Dakotas into New England would be under its 'major' or 'extreme' warning levels for dangerous heat. Environment Canada, the country’s weather service, said that, through Wednesday, southern Ontario would be under an orange alert, the second most severe in its three-tier system."
