  1. My new keeb arrived yesterday. I've had to fiddle around with the key layout a bit (it wanted backspace to be on the right hand under M key) and a few others, but I'll get it working.

Vial.rocks doesn't seem to want to work, but the app does. Its less intuitive than ZSA's Oryx, but I'm sure I'll work it out. Need to get used to no tenting though 😬

  6. I have a shiny new QMK/VIAL configurable macro pad and thanks to some magic with the compose key to work around the fact that it can't directly output Unicode, I now have the dedicated interrobang key I've wanted for years.

    Cool, huh‽

OK, that's not the real reason I wanted it, but it's a huge bonus.

  11. I managed to ESD-fry one of the pins on the #rp2040 handling my #diy split #keyboard. I touched a key, heard a pop, and the row stopped working.

Electrically the row is fine, but the pin just wasn't registering. Fortunately there are enough spare pins, so a quick resolder, config edit, #vial #qmk FW build and upload and it's good as new.

    #opensourcehardware FTW

  12. "Use QMK!" they said.

"No, use VIA! You will have a way to configure keyboard via web browser!" said others.

"Forget QMK or VIA, use VIAL!" said yet another group.

You know what I say? Forget VIAL - it is interesting fork with even worse docs than QMK (which has awful docs).

    Go QMK + VIA_ENABLE=yes.

  13. Looks like I need to do some JSON wrangling to tell #QMK/ #Vial the physical layout of my keyboards, rather than just a logical grid (which sufficed for my 36 key layout). I’ve done it for #ZMK Studio and #KeymapDrawer - so I have all the key positions, angles, and sizes…

    See github.com/adamws/kle-ng/issue

  15. Made progress on an #OpenRGB controller for #QMK #Vial #VialRGB. It's the protocol used to control the RGB on the #RaspberryPi 500+. I'm dumbfounded as to why they chose 8/8/8 HSV instead of sending RGB directly, means a bunch of extra math to get worse color accuracy but it's how they designed the protocol for some reason.

Next step is to figure out the matrix layout.

  16. THIS IS SO FREAKING AWESOME!

#DURRY announced its Fall tour, and they are bringing #GullyBoys and #VIAL out on the road with them!

These are the three best bands from MSP in the last 5 years!!!

If you are in one of these towns, catch them! And you're welcome.

  17. I'm enjoying the mouse keys a lot, not having to lift the fingers from the keyboard is amazing.

The layout also forces me to properly use the ten finger touch typing, as I can't simply "cheat" by using other fingers. It will take some time getting used to the layout.

And I also like the fact that I can just remap keys in #Vial if I don't feel comfortable.

  18. After a few hours of scratching my head about the diode wiring, my #diy #dactyl #manuform #splitkeyboard is wired up and working!

Now I need to do the other half 😭

The thick enamel wire is horrible to solder to (at least I'm sure there won't be any shorts!) and the config is really confusing to reason about.

But it's all set up with #Vial #QMK so at least I can change the keymap without recompiling/flashing!

  19. I've taken the next step on my #AltKeyboardLayout #SplitKeyboard journey where I move from the #Gallium layout to the #Graphite layout. While there is not a huge difference between these two keyboard layouts, the Gallium layout has some punctuation tweaks that might make it easier to type the \( \LaTeX \) code in my lesson handouts.

It was not without some challenges to implement #graphite on my #ZSA #Voyager keyboard though -- I captured some of my journey in this blog article:

2015 war Patrick Strickland das erste Mal auf #Lesbos, 2016 berichtete er zum ersten Mal über die Situation von #RefugeesGR in #Vial auf #Chios.. Dieses Jahr im November war er zum vierten Mal dort. So wird seine aktuelle Bestandsaufnahme auch zu einem Rückblick auf 10 Jahre menschenverachtender wie tödlicher europäischer Abschottungspolitik.

  24. If you use Vial (get.vial.today) to configure your keyboard on macOS and you need to map a key to backtick/tilde, mapping it to the backtick/tidle key in the Vial keyboard won’t work (you’ll get the section/plus-minus key). Instead, map it to the following code:

    KC_NONUS_BSLASH

(At least that’s what worked for me on the British English Mac layout.)

  26. took a little more effort than I thought but I finally got my diy 3d printed keyboard setup for vial and yea, it absolutely does exactly what I wanted.
Added a screenshot of the VIAL configurator, and here's the link to my buildlog with all the files/images/etc. is here. hackaday.io/project/179006-3d-

  27. After 6 months of using it, I finally made the tutorial on how to compile and install a compatible firmware on the iris rev8 ergonomic mechanical keyboard, using Arch Linux.

I also show how to tweak the source code for the firmware to get 8 layers instead of the default 4! (the Raspberry Pi controller can take it)

is great, as you have the right to modify the code for it to do exactly what you need it for!

  28. hey #vial #customkeyboard users (#ferris #sweep here). just to let you know, under #linux most connection issues to vial seem to stem from user ownership of /dev/hidrawx so make sure you try that, e.g. sudo chown $USER:$USER /dev/hidraw5 and 6.

  29. New #MechanicalKeyboard day! It's a #Kiser Monorail 45% #keyboard which I recently bought from @opendev on #40sDay in the Fediverse. I've put #HolyBoba switches in the #Kailh #hotswap sockets and put MiTo's GMK Laser keycap set plus some novelties on.

And yes, the #KiserMonorail is #V4N4G0N compatible, so it's my fifth keyboard with #TheVanKeyboards #Minivan-style layout.

It runs #QMK on an #RP2040 and uses easy peasy #Vial for configuration!

  30. @xro that.... looks oddly familiar :) Thanks for mentioning #chrumm, did not pop up on my radar yet. Looks like I need to take a closer look. I do also run a variant of #QMK - #Vial which allows you to remap keys and reconfigure the firmware on the fly (tapdance and whatnot). Worth the effort!

  32. I'm trying to get my Iris rev. 8 configured on , so I downloaded the appimage from GitHub, and created an udev rule in accordance with their guide. Unfortunately, it does not work.

I also got the appimage, which works, it prompted me for a root password and created an udev rule.

Is there a reason for that? Is it just a fact that Vial support less keyboard types than Via?

  33. Look what I received from mail today.

    Skywatch keyboard, designed by @ozkan

Runs great with QMK firmware, with Vial support, and has a rp2040 microcontroller inside! It also has a trackball!
