  1. Just finished a 3pg email to my State’s Transport Minister and my Local Member; asking them to have both the Main Roads and Transport agencies pull their finger out when it comes to maintaining & supporting a safe principal shared path network in WA.

The list of issues and faults was long, too long to summarise here, but most of the issues could be fixed with the pocket change these agencies have behind the couch.

  2. @ukwaterways
On the way back I took a couple of photos showing #bridges over the stream that would run alongside the #lane. Would, because it was bone dry at the moment. The bridges take obviously what must be almost unused #public #footpaths that my map says link the lane with various points along the main road.

Just before crossing the main road I discovered another #shaft that I'd failed to notice on the way out. Strange, because it must be three times the diameter of the others.

Once back on the #towpath north of the #tunnel, I couldn't resist a final photo of a group of #mallard rushing towards us. I guess they were expecting us to feed them.

  3. Taking from cars and giving to people

Kerbside parking - "Drivers are using a public road to park their private cars. What would happen if authorities banned on-street parking?"

"Australia actually has an oversupply of parking, both on streets and in parking lots...In many European nations, authorities have worked to make streets less centred on cars and parking." >>

  4. Crashes at Lavenders Bridge, North Bellingen

    * Just a short time ago two women were killed and another seriously injured after a motorist 'lost control' near the notorious Lavender Bridge and smashed into two cars parked at the riverside swimming spot. >>

    * Today there was another serious incident involving two e-bikes. An ambulance was seen at the crash zone. An injured person was seen lying on the ground. (The ambulance is visible on the Kombu Flood Camera at 2026-05-24 11.26 ) >>

    * In the design of the new 'Lavenders Bridge Replacement' bikes and foot traffic do not seem to be a feature. A lot of bitumen was smeared over the river banks to facilitate the convenience for cars (parking).

  5. The long road to a bike-friendly Australia
    and the dehumanisation of cyclists

    * "At the rate Australian cities are building cycling networks, a cohesive system is probably decades away. What’s taking so long?

"NSW wants to double active transport trips in 20 years...But at the rate Australian cities are building cycling networks, a cohesive system is probably another 50 years away, experts speaking to The Fifth Estate warned. Progress is slow. (One bike bridge was recently installed in Melbourne after 37 years of lobbying and discussion.)"

"A 2024 report by The Australia Institute points out that less than 1 per cent of federal road funding goes to active transport infrastructure."

"Richter was one of 49 bike riders who died on Australian roads last year, up on the average of around 38 deaths per year between 2012-23. (Thousands more were hospitalised with serious injuries during that period.)." >>

  6. #Walking the Okōchi Sansō #Garden, #Arashiyama, #Kyoto, #Japan. The place is absolutely beautiful, but considering its size, the length of the trail, and all the elevation changes, it felt more like a hike than a garden stroll. 😄

  7. Motorists killing road workers? Money over lives?
    We'd rather not know

"The way road trauma was classified contributed to that visibility problem."

"A traffic controller killed at a roadworks site does not appear in a public 'road worker' category."

"...While Queensland published weekly road toll figures, there was no one publicly accessible source that integrated public road fatalities, work-related road deaths, serious injury hospitalisations in one place or in near-real time. Road workers are especially vulnerable because they are exposed on high-speed corridors where a single reckless decision can have catastrophic consequences."

"Tragically, one afternoon Suzanne was struck by a truck travelling 106km/h in a 60km/h zone. The truck drove on the footpath and killed her." >>

  8. In Bellingen all space seems devoted to parking for combustion machines. Every lawn, river banks, footpaths - everywhere space is eaten by cars with an expensive need for petrol from the Middle East. Carparks litter the landscape of the small town that has very few footpaths.

  9. There's a patch of Access Land to the south east of Rothbury. The path up to it used to have white birch railings, but these fell down a year ago. The path has now become quite overgrown to the point where an unofficial path about 100 metres further along the cutting is easier.

  10. A primary route closed for more than two years. No-one should say Norfolk takes active travel seriously while stuff like this happens, and council support for walking is usually much more than for cycling!

  11. It's the last few hours of fundraising for UK long distance footpath advocacy, development, sustainment and promotion project.

Slow Ways had done some great and noble work so far. This fundraiser will help take their efforts much further.
