  1. #Walking the Okōchi Sansō #Garden, #Arashiyama, #Kyoto, #Japan. The place is absolutely beautiful, but considering its size, the length of the trail, and all the elevation changes, it felt more like a hike than a garden stroll. 😄

  2. Motorists killing road workers? Money over lives?
    We'd rather not know

"The way road trauma was classified contributed to that visibility problem."

"A traffic controller killed at a roadworks site does not appear in a public 'road worker' category."

"...While Queensland published weekly road toll figures, there was no one publicly accessible source that integrated public road fatalities, work-related road deaths, serious injury hospitalisations in one place or in near-real time. Road workers are especially vulnerable because they are exposed on high-speed corridors where a single reckless decision can have catastrophic consequences."

"Tragically, one afternoon Suzanne was struck by a truck travelling 106km/h in a 60km/h zone. The truck drove on the footpath and killed her." >>

  7. In Bellingen all space seems devoted to parking for combustion machines. Every lawn, river banks, footpaths - everywhere space is eaten by cars with an expensive need for petrol from the Middle East. Carparks litter the landscape of the small town that has very few footpaths.

  8. There's a patch of Access Land to the south east of Rothbury. The path up to it used to have white birch railings, but these fell down a year ago. The path has now become quite overgrown to the point where an unofficial path about 100 metres further along the cutting is easier.

  9. A primary route closed for more than two years. No-one should say Norfolk takes active travel seriously while stuff like this happens, and council support for walking is usually much more than for cycling!

Slow Ways had done some great and noble work so far. This fundraiser will help take their efforts much further.

  13. Car ramming attacks: Weaponized cars have a global footprint

"It subconsciously becomes part of the repertoire of options for people to express their anger in some way and they get exposed to it through the vectors of the media and social media."

"Redesigned urban areas could be one of the simplest ways to prevent car ramming attacks. Paille points to separating roads and footpaths as an example. "Things that make it more difficult for a vehicle to access certain spaces…I found that quite interesting in terms of thinking about public space and making sure it is usable by everyday citizens, but also can help their safety. Bollards are one option commonly used in built-up areas…”

  18. In another part, #cycle and #footpaths are clearly segregated and here they’re coloured distinctively. This is a good design and one often passes jammed road traffic at the busy junction ahead.

  19. Australian transport emissions are still growing.

"As a result, transport is expected to be our biggest-emitting sector by 2030. So, cutting transport emissions is crucial to Australia’s net-zero strategy."

"Current domestic emissions by transport mode are skewed. The vast bulk (85%) of total annual carbon-dioxide-equivalent (CO₂-e) emissions comes from road transport. It’s followed by air (8%), rail (4%) and sea (2%) transport."

"From an emissions perspective, high-speed electric rail is a great alternative to road and air transport for travel between capital cities. It would result in deep emission cuts varying from 75–95%."

  20. 'There will be many #footpaths simply lost'

    August 19, 2024
    Emily Unia & Miguel Roca-Terry

"Thousands of miles of footpaths could be lost due to a massive backlog in local councils dealing with applications, campaigners say.

"The government has set a deadline of 2031 for all rights of way in England to be added to an official map.

"But data gathered by the BBC suggests nearly 8,000 requests to get public paths and bridleways added to the map have not been processed – and some date back to the 1980s.

"The government said processing applications was the responsibility of local authorities."

    [...]

"'We’ve got tens of thousands of miles of public rights of way that are not recorded or protected across #England and #Wales.'

"'If we have a deadline then there will be many paths that are simply lost.'"

  21. Civilise the town!

The Bellingen, CBD Master Plan 2024

"We are making a new master plan for the CBDs of Bellingen, Dorrigo and Urunga and we want the community, business owners, visitors and stakeholders to share with us your ideas. A master plan is a strategic document outlining a long-term vision and implementation strategy for guiding growth and change in an area."

"The upcoming draft master plan for Bellingen, Dorrigo, and Urunga CBDs will influence the future appearance, atmosphere, and functionality of the town centres. It will address various factors, including land use, building density, public spaces, mobility, sustainability, and heritage"

"We have created different avenues for you to provide ideas and feedback to help shape the vision and focus for the future of your town. To get started, you can complete our short (5 minute) survey for your town below. The survey will be active from 18 January - 18 February 2024"

The next meeting will be held on 12.02.2024, 6.30 pm

  22. Killer roads

"Five people died and four were injured in three car crashes across NSW since 2pm Monday. Federal data released this week shows the national road death toll increased 7 per cent from 2022 to last year, while the NSW toll jumped 25 per cent."
    abc.net.au/news/2024-01-16/hor

They call for more data on the "death Toll", money and more (killer) roads, but never for a radical infrastructure redesign. No data on "roadkill" of native animals either.

  23. A few more pics from part 2 of #SlowWays Plymstock to Salcombe. Restarting at Bigbury was not ideal - no buses of course (except on a Tuesday 🙄) so getting there this morning was a mini adventure in itself. Three buses (miraculously on time) & a lovely 5.5 mile walk along the Avon Estuary to the ferry. The continuation of the SlowWay was 10 miles through a landscape of rolling green hills & coastal valleys characteristic of the South Hams. A cracking #holloway too.

  24. Took an #AwkwardWalk from the house, around 6km, taking in an apparently blocked footpath and a most unwelcoming corner of the Pevensey Levels.

These routes will soon be in the nearest green spaces to the 100s of new houses being built on the edge of town.

Will these paths be further blocked, hidden and degraded? Or could they become welcoming and beloved places to walk for new local people?
