Let's continue to be careful out there. We think we can acclimate to climate change but I ran out of water yesterday while riding and feel like crap today.
That's not even my point.
I found a lost man on one of the unofficial trails I ride in the local county park yesterday. He seemed to have no sense of where he started and was possibly going in circles in the scorching down heat of the day. After talking to him, he somehow had just his parking marked on gmaps but was not tracking his route. I was able to help him get his bearings, figure out which direction to go to that particular parking lot, and, as far as I could tell, after looping back to check on him, he got out of there VERY quickly and drove away. Now, he told me he lives in a much hotter area so he might be slightly used to it but I don't think that matters. There's no water in that park. If he'd kept going in circles, he could have gotten into serious heat trouble and he was less than half a mile from his car. This is the same condition as the woman who died in San Diego a few years back.
If you get disoriented, it doesn't matter what resources you have. You can still die an avoidable death from extreme exposure.
Carry more liters of water than you need. Some of them need to be supplemented with electrolytes. Stay out of the heat of the day. Exerting yourself strenuously in extreme conditions requires you to be even more prepared than usual. There's a reason why it's the Boy Scout's motto. It can save your life.
