  1. "The #social-media industry spent a decade making its #toxic practices legally and politically untouchable. The children, parents, and loved ones of those harmed are now demanding #accountability. The question is whether #policymakers will respond before the #AI industry replicates the same model."

  2. Cost-shifting saga shocks
"Reports auths shifted #energy costs for public streetlights to consumers r shocking.. Consumers already bear costs such as Ft fr #government #procurement of excess power fr producers.. Energy #policymakers & prev govts allowed it to happen w/o informing #public. Tis cost shifting's eg of te #secrecy & #inequality underly'g how #electricity tariffs & #policies r formulated. There's no truly independent #regulatory body oversee'g 🇹🇭s energy sector"

  6. In an open letter, the heads of leading #AI companies, scientists, and #biosecurity experts are imploring #policymakers to regulate them by law so that their machines do not develop #biochemical weapons.

They will likely receive praise and recognition for this, even though the whole premise is flawed. Human decency is sufficient to prevent such things—that is, the ability to restrain and control oneself.

The tragic reality, however, is that #decency is found only where it is unimportant. Once #power and the necessary means come into play, it stands no chance against #greed.

  7. On 8 May 2026 at #EGU26, scientists, #policymakers, and #EU representatives gathered to discuss the EU #Soil Monitoring and Resilience Law and the role of soil science in supporting evidence-based EU policies.

During the session: ''Facing the last policy challenges in the EU: How soil scientists can contribute to the demands for scientific evidence to support EU policies.'' Kaisa Säkkinen shared key highlights in our last #GeoLog post.

  9. 📉 CPC member Dr Bernice Kuang was called on to discuss whether #fallingbirthrates are really something to worry about, for the latest #TheRestisPolitics newsletter.

Bernice described how declining #birthrates should not provoke panic.

Instead, #policymakers should use them to devise big picture strategies to help #youngpeople have #children if and when they want to, alongside creating solutions to #care for #oldergenerations as they age.

  10. 'Rather than trying to “fix” falling #birthrates, #policymakers should prepare for an #older #population – from rethinking how #oldage support is funded, to enabling people to remain in #work for longer. “Simply telling people to have more #babies is unlikely to work,” said CPC-CG member Dr Bernice Kuang' (Department of #SocialStatistics and #Demography at the University of #Southampton), who spoke with #TheGuardian last week about the latest #ONS #PopulationProjections.

  15. theconversation.com/how-climat; journals.plos.org/climate/arti (full text). "Some #scientists choose to take part in civil disobedience, a form of peaceful #protest that involves deliberately breaking the #law to draw attention to an issue... Many scientists told me this move was driven by frustration with the limits of conventional #science #communication. Many had spent years publishing #research, advising #policymakers & engaging with the #media, yet saw little meaningful #political response."

"postwar order carried te seeds of its demise. Authority was concentrated in Western‑led institutions tt claimed to speak for te world. #US #hegemony often led to overreach & #hubris.. confidence in US model's superiority obscured reality of domestic decay.. 2008 #GFC was an early warning.
