@jonpsp I feel your pain, but must admit I filled my car with Diesel in #Basingstoke on Thursday. I have a funeral to attend in London and need the miles next week.

I checked public transport but it would add four hours to the round trip, mainly because of dodgy bus connections, a single bus once an hour notorious for not running...

So what am I to do?

@tfnhomes I heard a rumour that the Hounsome Fields development in #Basingstoke was approved by Highways on the basis that the pre-existing congestion on the A30 was so much that people living on the new development would be prevented from joining it during rush hour, so the development would make no difference to traffic volumes. Obviously they didn't bother even starting to build the shared use path to link the development with the rest of Basingstoke until years after people moved in.

I wonder what was happening at #HatchWarren #Sainsburys in #Basingstoke earlier. I haven't seen so many #police in one place for years. The police had gone by the time I left, but the big group of teenagers was still lurking in the dark by the bike parking (why is bike parking unlit at so many shops?)

#Basingstoke Borough Council's 2016 Cycling Strategy had a target to double cycle trips to work over 10 years. I should probably contact them to ask how that's going given that between it and the subsequent LCWIP, nothing really has changed in terms of producing joined-up high quality cycling infrastructure.

Long ago, #Basingstoke council had little electric sweeper vans that they used to keep paths clear of leaves. Rumour has it that a previous Conservative administration sold them (Austerity meant that paths weren't being cleared). Now we don't have a Conservative council, paths are being cleared again but using hand-held petrol leaf blowers.

I can't help thinking we've gone backwards - other than the pollution, it now takes longer to clear paths. Maybe it's cheaper to employ people.
