Goodness gracious, we're going to be eating on this egg for days like the crew from "Caveman"

#ColossalBiosciences is growing #chickens in a 3D-printed container
In an early step towards artificial wombs, a #biotech company claims it’s developed a “fully artificial” chicken #egg as part of its effort to resurrect extinct avian species, including birds like the dodo and the giant moa.
Colossal was founded in 2021 with plans to use gene editing and reproductive technology to restore extinct species, including the woolly mammoth.

The #chickens are chilling out in the shade of the sheep shed, but they get excited to have some corn.

'Drone' warfare is older than you might think. In 1267, the Sheriff of Essex claimed, as a confidence trick, that 40 male chickens were to be used to carry incendiaries, tied to their feet, as part of efforts to quell a popular uprising in London. Not carried out in practice, the idea was nevertheless there!

We have (not entirely by plan) a Barnevelder chick that had a difficult hatch and came out with splay leg and spent several days in a cup before experimentally transitioning to the brooder. It's trying, and it's slowly improving, but it's SO small that none of my usual chicken interventions are feasible. I can't gavage it, that's for damn sure. Syringe-feeding protein slurry blobs for it to peck off the nozzle is risky, but it's too unstable to peck at a feeder normally.
A /real/ farmer would just cull it, but I'm a poseur.

Today I had the audacity to take an orange bucket that did *not* have chicken food in it out to the outdoor bathroom and the chickens followed me *all the way there* and then turned around and acted like they'd intended to peck that one spot so far away the whole time!
Also somehow hens are breaking into the brood box and annoying our currently broody hen. Investigation ongoing. Chickens are weird.

The little witches, Baba Yaga and Nanny Ogg are now 3 months old and not so little anymore. Their voices have now changed and their peeps are no more. #chickens

Alright, at least I got the mulch bags & wood hauled out of the car before the heat began kicking me. I'll spread it more sensibly on Sunday &/or Monday, (Sunday likely including my switching out the bird's bedding, putting the used stuff in the front yard) then likely get more on Tuesday or Thursday.
Dragging today rather badly but... the push continues- as I've got to get the supplies that wouldn't fit in my vehicle yesterday.
