Day 10 #SciArtSeptember: woad. My #SciArt #embroidery, cell map (2020), has some woad (blue/green) elements in the linen and in the stitching.

Bayeux Mania!

Books are just one of the many ways to interpret and record history. The 11th-century Bayeux tapestry, is going on display to the public today in the UK. The tapestry has more than 220 feet of embroidery detailing the events leading up to the Norman conquest of England in 1066. And the public is loving it.

British Museum Opens Bayeux Tapestry Exhibition

Inside the exhibition on Thursday morning, the first visitors made their way along the tapestry, snapping photos as they went. They were all quiet until one — Cheryl Prax, 71, a retired property manager — spotted some of the nude figures in the tapestry’s borders and laughed loudly. “I love quirky historical things like that,” Prax said afterward.

Using #Inkscape to plan #embroidery because why not.
Also using shape builder templates off label, as pre-defined grids. You can add an axonometric grid doing the same (File>Document properties>Grids>Axonometric grid), but with more motions.
If you are here for embroidery part, the plan is to backstitch, with each branch consisting of two stitches. I'll have to draw this on my fabric as I'm famously not good at keeping stitches length even. I consider it charming for contours of rounded stuff, and useful in the corners, but not so much for such geometric designs.

新技能學習了21小時了（7堂課）
電繡花，也稱自由繡，老一些的台灣朋友會知道的是 電繡學號。

在社群上看到不少國外創作者的作品，覺得就是在布上畫圖，紋路製造的感覺跟色鉛筆非常類似。只要不開腳弓的部分，感受上幾乎就跟普通畫圖差不多，車起來非常開心（只要油門控制得宜不失速）

這週課堂的練習我用老師之前教過的技法亂車了一隻薯。覺得如果是素底提袋上車滿線條薯感覺會很可愛，於是畫了這幅，希望再練個幾週能車出一個袋面。

不要半途而廢啊我！！

Can’t concentrate so I learned Tunisian crochet (https://youtu.be/ZbMDz4egpVU), which is a technique that produces fabrics with square (1:1) stitches. The obvious thing for me to do is to make small 8×8 squares (with margins) and embroider them with tiny pixel art. (From what I saw embroidery looks better than changing colours, and it’s also easier). Searching "8x8" on r/PixelArt yielded some results, including these masterpieces by @johanvinet that manage to compress a mind-boggling amount of recognisability into 64 pixels with 16 colours:

"Fukusa (Gift Cover)," Unknown artist, 1840-70.

An old Japanese tradition was that gifts would be presented on a tray or in a box, and would be draped with a fukusa, a showy cloth, usually embroidered, that would show off the giver's wealth and/or social position.

Here we have a fukusa of blue satin, embroidered with cranes in silk and metallic thread. Cranes are a symbol of longevity in Japan, as they were believed to live for 1,000 years.

I can imagine this being used to cover a gift from a younger person to an older relative or parent, perhaps, communicating a wish for a long life. The fukusa tradition has all but died out in Japan, which seems a pity, but at least we have examples like this to keep the memory alive.
