  1. How much do Australian governments care about culture and history?

Well, Australia's oldest colonial European cemetery is currently being maintained by volunteers:

"With a pair of gardening gloves in hand and a massive grin on her face, historian Judith Dunn gestures to an old burial vault surrounded by tall native grasses.
    ...
"Ms Dunn is among 10 taphophiles, otherwise known as 'tombstone tourists' because of their interest in cemeteries.

They recently spent their weekend tending to Australia's oldest surviving European cemetery.

"Nestled between apartment blocks and opposite an escape room, St John's Cemetery in Parramatta certainly has unique geography.

"With a meadow of long grass that obscures the plaques on headstones, passers-by could be forgiven for mistaking the cemetery for a vacant block.
    ...
"The origin of St John's Cemetery provides a snapshot of the gruelling reality of Australian colonial life.

"Convicts built the graveyard in 1790, after being moved west to Parramatta to grow crops needed to feed the fledgling colony.

"Harsh working conditions and the dangers of frontier life meant a burial ground was a necessity, not a luxury."
    ...
"Seventeen members of the First Fleet were later buried at the cemetery, where the first Jewish headstone in Australia can also be found.

"At least seven Sydney suburbs were named after people interred at St John's Cemetery, including Pymble, Harris Park, Wentworthville and Homebush."

  2. The Daily Telegraph is reporting that the plans to transform Church St in Parramatta into a "Chinatown" precinct are moving ahead.

Hopefully they get the people who established the excellent Chinatown precinct in Burwood involved in this one. I want to see all the neon lights, dammit!

"Most people think of its iconic dining strip when Parramatta’s Church St is mentioned but plans are under way to revitalise the southern side of the corridor from a “tired” to revamped precinct filled with colour and art installations.

"Colloquially known as Chinatown, Parramatta Council has released its South Parramatta CBD masterplan.

"The precinct includes a five-star hotel Marriott hotel with 275 rooms, more than 900 apartments and a permanent home for the Parramatta Artists’ Studios.

"The plan will activate laneways and arcades with eateries, public art, light features, wider footpaths, safer crossings, street trees and cycleways.

"Public spaces, including Woodhouse Square at Wentworth St and Firehorse Plaza, will provide “places to meet, relax, host markets and celebrate culture, giving the precinct a clear community identity”.

"The area also takes in the former Auto Alley site where the Marriott hotel will stand.

"Much of the proposed art embraces the Chinatown theme."

  3. Sharath from Building Beautifully has put up a video about arguably Australia's biggest urban planning success story of the past 40 years.

That's the emergence of Parramatta as one of Australia's great cities: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifGwIJo7OWo

And with good reason. There's a lot that Parra has done right.

Instead of just building apartments or office towers, it's built both.

It's built enough new apartments close to public transport to keep house prices level, even as demand has grown.

It has multiple train lines, ferries, and dedicated busways, has added light rail, and is adding a metro.

It has the best public square in the whole Greater Sydney metro area in Parramatta Square.

It has a pedestrianised main street with many restaurants.

And it's cemented itself as the second CBD (central business district) for the Sydney metro area, and the main CBD for Western Sydney.

If you have any interest in urbanism and cities, it's worth visiting on a weekday just to see what it looks like when urban planning works.

  10. @ajsadauskas Here's a nerdy little sidenote some of you folks might find interesting.

Notice how the light pole in the photo is also being used to carry a Parramatta city council banner (in this case, celebrating Easter)?

Notice as well various censors and pieces of comms equipment are attached to the pole? And also, near the bottom, a flower bed?

If you'll look closely, you'll notice there's a groove down the side of the pole. And the various things on it are attached with standard mountings? (So the light at the top, for example, isn't welded in place. It's attached with a mounting.)

What you're looking at is a Standards Australia SA TS 5386:2024 multifunction pole. ( https://www.standards.org.au/standards-catalogue/standard-details?designation=sa-ts-5386-2024 )

This design is less prevalent in other states, but they're everywhere in New South Wales.

Some background from the design studio that created this design:

"The award winning HUB Multi-Function Pole System combines multiple street pole functions onto one beautifully designed structural urban element.

"Invented by 4design, The HUB MFP System is a fully modular system that can be adapted to the needs of any modern city through a variety of size of pole and associated fixtures.

"The patented system combines a simple elegant pole with a universal mounting system that allows the device to expand to accommodate Traffic Lights, Signage, communications systems etc. Developed in Australia, the HUB Pole is now a globally respected Multi Function Pole System."

    https://www.4design.com.au/project/multi-function-pole-street-equipment/

Some more background info from the NSW State Government Movement & Place website:

"Adopt a multi-function pole system in urban areas, where many single-use poles and structures for signs, traffic control signals, CCTV, flags and lighting can be rationalised to a single, modular system pole reducing clutter and enabling other streetscape improvements.

    "Benefits
    * Reduces clutter by combining several posts, poles and structural supports into a single element
    * Is a modular system, allowing a single product range to be used as a unifying element in an urban area
*Allows additional items, upgraded technology or functions to be installed on the pole over time, reducing the need to dig up paving or planting beds

    "Considerations
    * Will normally not be maintained by the electricity authority and be treated as a private pole
    * Structural footings, installation requirements and connections to power, telecommunications etc may be complex
    * Not all proprietary systems are frangible and suitable for higher-speed environments"

  11. I'm all for arts festivals including food as a focus of their exhibitions 😋

And it looks like the 2026 NSW Biennale will deliver:

"The Biennale will expand its footprint in Western Sydney this year, including Penrith Regional Gallery for the first time and bringing back Campbelltown Arts Centre. There will also be public programs across inner city and greater Sydney, including Centenary Square in Parramatta, Fairfield City Museum & Gallery and Redfern Town Hall. White Bay Power Station, a popular addition to the Biennale last year, will this year feature large-scale sculptural and installation works by artists including Nikesha Breeze (US) and painter Nancy Yukuwal McDinny (Garrwa/Yanyuwa).
    ...
"Highlights announced on Tuesday include a giant functioning clay oven at White Bay Power Station in Rozelle, created by Argentinian sculptor Gabriel Chaile, which will be activated for the Biennale’s opening weekend and at key moments through the festival to serve visitors Peruvian cuisine. Also for food lovers is a large vat of tabbouleh, created by Lebanese artist Mounira Al Solh as part of a community-based performance in Granville.

"The Biennale will also include a rare presentation of the landmark 80-square-metre Ngurrara Canvas II, made by the Ngurrara artists of the Great Sandy Desert of Western Australia in support of their 1996 native title claim. The spectacular painting, created by more than 40 artists, toured Australia in the decade after it was created and has been exhibited internationally – but its Biennale presentation, at the Art Gallery of NSW, will be its final outing before returning to the artists’ country permanently."

  13. Some of the councillors at the City of Parramatta are apparently still in the dark about why ICAC raided its staff offices last month.

"Councillors in the City of Parramatta are seeking more information and independent legal advice about a raid conducted by the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) in its staff offices last month.

"The Herald three weeks ago revealed the powerful anti-corruption body raided the staff offices of the council hours before a council meeting and seized the mobile phones of several senior staff.

"Councillors were not informed about the raid before the story was published, and at multiple times since have been told the matter cannot be discussed, which is a standard procedure for matters involving the ICAC.

"Councillors are pushing the council to address the matter before next Monday’s meeting.

"Independent councillor Kellie Darley will propose at the meeting that the council acknowledge community concerns over the “entry” to the offices, and Liberal councillor Steven Issa has submitted a question on notice about risk and reputational exposure.

"Darley is seeking the council’s support for Liberal Lord Mayor Martin Zaiter and Labor Deputy Lord Mayor Cameron Maclean to obtain independent legal advice on the matter and to arrange a briefing for councillors on their rights and responsibilities.
    ...
"Darley alleged that council staff had requested she adjust the title of her motion from “Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC)” because it was 'inflammatory'. 'I find that really bizarre, and frankly, ridiculous.'"

  14. "Place of the Eels by Christopher Tobin honours Parramatta - or Burramatta - as the home of the eels.

This year’s NAIDOC theme ‘The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy' reflects on the Dharug people's enduring knowledge systems and the importance of passing their stories on.

Tobin explains that the ‘barra’ (eel) was an important food source for the local Baramadagal. Each Autumn, the lagoons around Parramatta provided abundant food as mature eels prepared for their 5,000km journey to the Coral Sea to give birth to the next generation. These seasonal gatherings drew Aboriginal groups from across the region together to share knowledge, celebrate culture, and build a legacy."
