  7. Big #ant Alert.

    @futurebird

Saw this quite big ant just now, had a hard time getting a good picture, but here are some kind of decent ones?

With a few more on inaturalist.org/observations/3

INaturalist auto detection seems pretty confused about the exact type, but i guess much better images would be needed.

She seemed to be struggling with going up vertical surfaces, one leg seemed weak. Gave it an escape to some ground.

    18/52 Ants at Work
Labor Day. Hiking Day. We went for a lovely walk in the sunshine, across a golf course, along a small creek, through the meadows and the woods. The scenery was very varied, and there was plenty to discover. We saw this anthill, and it seemed to me as the perfect combination of Labor Day and the challenge all in one 😎

Most European languages are united by a common thread: the word for ant. From the Galician formiga to the Romanian furnică, and from Greek μυρμήγκι (myrmígki) to Finnish muurahainen. Surprising, huh? We can find the traces of a single Proto-Indo-European ancestor: *mórwis.

  11. Ant art.

This oak post was rotten inside and ants lived in it, gnawing the wood into this artful installation.

There's still one lost forest ant peeking out there.

  13. The Seychelles mealybug (Icerya seychellarum) got its name because it was first spotted in a shipment of wood from there. It’s a pest made up almost entirely of females that reproduce through parthenogenesis. It secretes honeydew, which ants love to feed on.

  16. Found a Lasius neoniger queen on the sports field so I moved her to a safer place. Fed her some water. Hope she can survive the winter! She is so beautiful #ant #Lasius #queen

  17. @futurebird
    > Why do they need to move?

To begin with it's a general question to learn and understand, as this is a public follow up thread with the idea to preserve it over time, who knows to whom, when or where that info can be useful.

We love the ornamental and even historic aspects of these trunks, as well as the #education'al aspects of them.

As you can see in the following picture, on the right alongside the tree, we simple use them placed up side down as they are, displaying their beauty to the eyes the beholder.
Actually in the case of this trunk, the initial intention was to load it right away onto the @bitpickup and transport it to the terrace of #laCasona, most likely for one of the corners, but the presence of the nest changed that, or at least the timetable for moving it.

Than there is always the investigating factor, like to say, to what extent can we use this event, this situation to document, find out and learn something while we are at it.

Specifying the species itself, would and should be most likely the next step. At a first glance it's save to state that this is the biggest kind of #ant we have seen over here #RioDeLaPlata, #Uruguay, #CerroLargo, a region of rocky hill's. Their color is kinda dark red, perhaps kinda brownisch red.

What details would you need to identify the species?

  18. Most build systems have their own syntax to write build scripts with the twist that functions are only run if their output could differ from the last call.

I turned this upside-down thing on its feet again, providing a Python library to run functions only if needed.

So your build script is just a Python script, but still does not run functions unnecessarily.

  20. The #slave #ant #Formica #fusca (#Formicinae) is seen here on common #tansy collecting #honeydew from and guarding the #aphid #Metopeurum #fuscoviride. The #workers of this ant #species, which builds #polygynous subterranean nests, are often exploited by other species for nest building. As C. Carere et al. (2018) found, there is a linear link between #individual and #collective #behavior.
