"In an increasingly human-dominated world, the natural landscapes that once stretched unbroken for miles are now often fragmented, carved up by roads, cities, and agricultural fields. This #fragmentation creates isolated 'islands' of habitat, trapping wildlife populations and threatening their long-term survival. Imagine a vibrant ecosystem, bustling with diverse life, suddenly cut into pieces. This is the challenge that wildlife corridors seek to address, offering a lifeline to nature by re-stitching the fabric of our planet.
The Urgent Need for Connectivity
Habitat fragmentation is a silent crisis, severing the vital connections that allow species to thrive. When large natural areas are broken into smaller, isolated patches, animals find themselves confined. This confinement leads to several critical problems:
- Limited Resources: Smaller areas mean fewer food sources, less water, and reduced shelter, especially during seasonal changes.
- Increased Vulnerability: Isolated populations are more susceptible to local extinction from disease, natural disasters, or even random events. A single wildfire or severe storm could wipe out an entire population.
- Genetic Isolation: Perhaps the most insidious threat is the loss of genetic diversity. Without the ability to move and breed with individuals from other populations, species become inbred, weakening their resilience to environmental changes and diseases.Wildlife corridors emerge as a powerful solution to these challenges. They are essentially pathways of habitat that connect otherwise isolated natural areas, allowing animals to move safely between them. These connections are crucial for maintaining healthy, robust ecosystems."

#CLAW envisions a connected network of habitat throughout the #SantaMonicaMountains, and beyond.
"For thousands of years, wildlife has been traversing the Santa Monica Mountains along well-established migratory patterns in order to find food, water, shelter, and mating opportunities. As urban sprawl spreads through this region, access to these routes becomes blocked or dangerous.
What CLAW is doing
CLAW is taking a multi-pronged approach to protecting connected habitat blocks and wildlife corridors in #LosAngeles.
- Wildlife Corridor Ordinance: CLAW successfully advocated for the City of Los Angeles to designate the eastern Santa Monica Mountains (between the 405 and 101 Freeways) as LA's first #WildlifeDistrict. The City Planning Department’s preliminary work for this ordinance can be seen in the Wildlife Pilot Study.
UPDATE: In December 2022, LA City’s Planning Commission voted to support the Wildlife Ordinance! The last step before a full City Council vote is the Planning and Land Use Committee. Follow our advocacy on this ordinance here.- Land Acquisition: CLAW and partner organizations fundraised over $1.6 million to acquire 17 acres of critical connective habitat in #LaurelCanyon in our Let's Buy A Mountain campaign. CLAW's nature cam documented the use of this land by multiple species of animals, including mountain lion and gray fox. This land, one of the largest parcels in the eastern Santa Monica Mountains, is a keystone portion of an established wildlife corridor.
- #ConservationEasements: CLAW holds a conservation easement on a parcel of open space habitat in the Santa Monica Mountains. Conservation easements are binding agreements that ensure the land will remain natural and undeveloped in perpetuity.
- Corridor Watchdog: In April 2018, CLAW filed an appeal against the approval of an 8,000 square foot house planned for development over an ecologically unique hillside stream area with multiple protected trees. The Los Angeles Planning Department failed to properly evaluate the importance of this land as a wildlife corridor connecting two crucial habitat hubs. Unfortunately, this construction project is continuing with full approval. CLAW will continue to monitor critical connective habitat sites to ensure that environmental review is thoroughly analyzed and considered."

"The #JaguarRiversInitiative is the first multi-country effort to create a massive wildlife corridor in the heart of South America. Uniting successful grassroots nonprofits in #Argentina, #Bolivia, #Brazil, and #Paraguay, the initiative will restore #ecosystems, bring back #KeySpecies, and develop #NatureBasedEconomies in a new cross-border model that addresses the mass #ExtinctionCrisis and climate instability on a global scale.
"In a groundbreaking announcement during #ClimateWeek in September [2025], an alliance of grassroots South American nonprofits launched South America’s largest continental-scale rewilding endeavor. The Jaguar Rivers Initiative plans to reconnect #FragmentedEcosystems across the vast #ParanáBasin using #RiverCorridors as the connective tissue. 'We all know the urgency of the #biodiversity and climate crises,' said Kristine Tompkins of Tompkins Conservation. 'This bold initiative underlines the need for coordinated, large-scale action before it’s too late. I’d call it a lifeline to our planet.'
"South America is in the midst of an unparalleled ecological crisis. #Wildlife populations across the region have declined by 94 percent since 1970—the steepest drop in the world. The drivers of this collapse—#deforestation, river degradation, #fragmentation, fire, and #overexploitation—are intensifying in the face of #ClimateChange.
"The Jaguar Rivers Initiative will restore, protect, and connect #ecosystems throughout the heart of South America, covering nearly one million square miles, an area almost twice the size of Alaska. According to Deli Saavedra, the director of the initiative, 'We’re undertaking a very strategic act to safeguard one of the largest river systems in the world. By restoring its ecological integrity, diverse species and communities currently under threat in four countries have the opportunity to thrive, using a model of nature restoration combined with regenerative economies that has been tested and proven successful in places like the #BrazilianPantanal and the #IberáWetlands of #Argentina.'
The initiative will be centered around four pillars:
• Arks: Large intact ecosystems with keystone species, restored and rewilded to become sources of wildlife dispersal.
• #BufferAreas: Surrounding zones where restorative economies promote coexistence and extend protection.
• Stepping Stones: Smaller wildlife refuges along corridors, often private reserves, that enable safe dispersal and reduce human-wildlife conflicts.
• #Rivers and #Floodplains: Vital corridors for connectivity, requiring healthy ecological flows; safeguarded through citizen guardianship, monitoring, and strong policies."

25 years ago, I interviewed #ChiefLookingHorse about World Peace and Prayer Day, and was inspired to organize a solidarity event in #PortlandME (in conjunction with #PeaceActionMaine) where we made art, spoke truth, played music, and fed the #Unhoused. It took a lot of work to organize, but I'm glad it happened. It's was all about #BuildingCommunity and #MutualAid, and that's what's needed #InTheseTimes!

"With a message of hope, Chief Looking Horse said his people are a people of peace and today, more than ever, the youths are singing their songs and on the ride from Green Grass.
"As World Peace and Prayer Day began, now in its thirtieth year, Chief Looking Horse said, 'Pipestone is the Blood of our People,'
"We need peace in this world more than ever."
"As World Peace and Prayer Day begins today, an elder from #Alaska speaks on the impact of a typhoon at #HooperBay. She spoke on the power of prayer, and efforts to recover. 'Their homes are totally destroyed.' Now, the federal government is depriving them of their funds."
"#Paiute #JoshDini and youth honor #MyronDewey, Paiute, and his efforts at #StandingRock. They are sharing what is happening at #ThackerPass, the #LithiumMining in Nevada.
"On the ride, now from Green Grass in South Dakota, Josh said they are able to share what is happening in Nevada and that Thacker Pass is a place of massacres.
"#Datacenters are being pushed without consultation with the tribe. The data centers are taking the land and water, even now in a #drought, the data centers are coming for the water, Josh said.
"Dr. #ValeriahBigEagle, #Nakota / #HunkpatiDakota, speaks on the power of prayer and protection of the land and water. At Sacred #Pesla, two drill rigs were stopped from going in. 25 years ago, I interviewed #ChiefLookingHorse about World Peace and Prayer Day, and was inspired to organize a solidarity event in #PortlandME (in conjunction with #PeaceActionMaine) where we made art, spoke truth, played music, and fed the #Unhoused. It took a lot of work to organize, but I'm glad it happened. It's was all about #BuildingCommunity and #MutualAid, and that's what's needed #InTheseTimes!

"The legislation created the new offence of aggravated unlawful entry on inclosed lands. Section 4B of the #InclosedLand Protection Act 1901 provides that interfering, or attempts to interfere, with the conduct of a business on enclosed land can land a #protester with a fine of up to $5,500.

"The three are up on charges of rendering a road belonging to a mine useless and hindering the working equipment belonging to a mine. These are both offences that carry the penalty of seven years imprisonment.
"When the trio appeared at Mudgee Local Court on February 9, the presiding magistrate rejected police claims that the Wollar-Ulan Road, where the defendants were arrested, actually belonged to the mining company.
" 'They have pleaded not guilty, and are awaiting a judgment on the case,' Mr Phillips explained. 'The outcome of that case will be important.” If the three have 'the book thrown at them' then it’s likely to discourage the protesting of coal mines in NSW."

An annual tradition since 1970, National Day of Mourning is a solemn, spiritual and highly political day. Many of us fast from sundown the day before through the afternoon of that day (and have a social after #NDOM so that participants in NDOM can break their fasts). We are mourning our ancestors and the #genocide of our peoples and the theft of our lands. NDOM is a day when we mourn, but we also feel our strength in action and solidarity.
When and where is Day of Mourning?
Thursday, November 27, 2025 (U.S. “thanksgiving” day) at Cole’s Hill, Plymouth, Massachusetts, 12 noon SHARP. Cole’s Hill is the hill above Plymouth Rock in the Plymouth historic waterfront area. The rallies and marches will last until approximately 3 pm.
Will there be a march?
Yes, there will be a march through the historic district of Plymouth. Plymouth agreed, as part of the settlement of 10/19/98, that UAINE may march on National Day of Mourning without the need for a permit as long as we give the town advance notice.
Program
Although we very much welcome our non-Native supporters to join us, it is a day when only Indigenous people speak about our history and the struggles that are taking place throughout the Americas. Speakers are by invitation only. This year’s NDOM will be livestreamed from Plymouth.
Note that NDOM is not a powwow or commercial event, so we ask that people do not sell merchandise or distribute leaflets at the outdoor program. We will have UAINE t-shirts available for sale following the march.
We also ask that you do not eat (unless you must do so for medical reasons) at the outdoor speak-out and march out of respect for the participants who are fasting.

KIRUNA, Sweden (AP) — "High atop the #LuossavaaraMountain in northern Sweden, Sami reindeer herder Lars-Marcus Kuhmunen mapped out a bleak future for himself and other #IndigenousPeople whose reindeer have roamed this land for thousands of years.
"An expanding iron-ore mine and a deposit of rare-earth minerals are fragmenting the land and altering ancient reindeer migration routes. But with the Arctic warming four times faster than the rest of the planet, herders say they need more geographic flexibility, not less, to ensure the animals’ survival.
"If a mine is established at the deposit of rare-earth minerals called Per Geijer, which Sweden heralds as Europe’s largest, Kuhmunen said it could completely cut off the migration routes used by the Sami village of #Gabna.
"That would be the end of the Indigenous way of life for Kuhmunen, his children and their fellow Sami reindeer herders, he said, in this far-north corner of Sweden some 200 kilometers (124 miles) above the Arctic Circle.
" 'The reindeer is the fundamental base of the Sami culture in Sweden,' Kuhmunen said. 'Everything is founded around the reindeers: The food, the language, the knowledge of mountains. Everything is founded around the reindeer herding. If that ceases to exist, the Sami culture will also cease to exist.'

"Swedish officials and #LKAB, the state-owned mining company, say the proposed Per Geijer mine could reduce Europe’s reliance on China for rare-earth minerals. LKAB hopes to begin mining there in the 2030s.
"Besides being essential to many kinds of consumer technology, including cellphones, hard drives and electric and hybrid vehicles, rare-earth minerals also are considered crucial to shifting the economy away from fossil fuels toward electricity and renewable energy.
"But if work on #PerGeijer goes forward, Kuhmunen said there will be no other routes for the #Gabna herders to take the reindeer east from the mountains in the summer to the grazing pastures full of nutrient-rich lichen in the winter.
"The village will contest the mine in court but Kuhmunen said he is not optimistic.
" 'It’s really difficult to fight a mine. They have all the resources, they have all the means. They have the money. We don’t have that,' Kuhmunen said. 'We only have our will to exist. To pass these grazing lands to our children.'

WINDOW ROCK, Arizona -- "A coalition of grassroots groups released a statement in response to recent announcements and actions by #NavajoNation President #BuuNygren regarding coal development, carbon market deals, and potential new mining projects.
"The coalition will host a Press Conference from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. (MDT) on Monday, April 21, 2025, outside the Navajo Nation Council Chambers during the first day of the Navajo Nation Council’s Spring Session. Please bring a folding chair, water, hats, and sunscreen, and dress appropriately for the weather to keep yourself safe and comfortable during the Press Conference.
"Summary of full statement:
● We call on the Navajo Nation President to stop making deals that degrade our land, water, and future.
● We urge tribal leaders not to repeat historical mistakes with respect to uranium extraction: Leave this Nayee’, Łeetso, in the ground. The cleanup and remediation of hundreds of abandoned mines must be completed, prioritizing public health safety and ecosystem health.
● We stand against the transport of uranium ore across the Navajo Nation because it is inconsistent with the intent of the Navajo Radioactive and Related Substances, Equipment, Persons and Materials Transportation Act of 2012, regardless of jurisdictional limits on our highways and roads.
● We steadfastly OPPOSE coal development, which negatively impacts the lands, water, and health of the Navajo people and contributes to #ClimateChange.
● We stand in protection of our water, health, traditional lifeways, Earth bundles (#Jish), and #MotherEarth.
"We call on all Diné #LandDefenders, #WaterProtectors, healers, young leaders, #matriarchs and warriors to stand together at WINDOW ROCK on APRIL 21, 2025. Her successor, former North Dakota Governor #DougBurgum, is steadfast in carrying out Trump’s Executive Order 14154 '#UnleashingAmericanEnergy' which aims to accelerate #mining and drilling on federal and #TribalLands.
"On February 3rd, Doug Burgum released this document which outlines all the revoked projects and programs intended to protect land and the people; giving a pathway for #MiningCompanies to hit the ground running across Turtle Island.
"In the #BlackHills, the #SacredLands of the #Lakota Peoples’, mining and drilling companies aren’t hesitating to cash out. Currently, South Dakota House Bill 1258 is under consideration by the House Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee, where it will come to a vote this Thursday, February 13th. Community members and citizens of the area were given just six days’ notice.
WHAT IS HB 1258?
"The passage of South Dakota House Bill 1258 would hold lithium mining to the same standards and laws as silver and gold. Under the current law, lithium mining is treated like mining for sand and gravel, and there are not enough protections for human #health, #food systems, #water, #wildlife, and the #land.
"HB 1258 would offer more accountability and appropriate processes for mining companies that would better protect the land, the people, and the economy of the #Ȟesápa. #NDNCollective, alongside partner the #BlackHillsCleanWaterAlliance, collaborated to spread the word as fast as possible, calling on relatives to swiftly take action ahead of Thursday, February 13th."
