When I was young I remember having a sense of pride that Britain had the biggest empire in history. (US imperialism works a bit differently but you could argue that is bigger and more powerful than Britain's empire ever was).

And that pride didn't come from me knowing what empire meant, it came from the opposite. It came from an ignorant belief that Britain is a 'good' country that upholds rights and values, and it came from an ignorance to what imperialism is and how empires are formed.

If you'd asked me what I thought of the concept of colonising the land of indigenous people I would have struggled to come up with an answer that absolves Britain's actions.

I was aware of the kinds of atrocities that Britain might have committed, and I suppose I could have thought of them as isolated incidences rather than integral policies of imperialism. But in reality, I just didn't think that deeply about such things because I wasn't educated about them and I never really thought much about it.

Colonialism wasn't really taught when I was at school, so it wasn't anything I really knew about. And often the concept of empire is presented as greatness when some kind of ceremony is televised.

I don't think anyone needs me to tell them education and knowledge are important, but I'm pretty certain that a large part of our problems come from most people being uninformed, either causing apathy or fervent support for oppression.

I was never massively patriotic, but I was a little more patriotic in my youth. But after years of learning what Britain actually stands for, I'm quite the opposite of patriotic. There are some good British people, and I am fond of British/English culture, but politically I do not support my country and I firmly believe in a dramatic change in our political system.
