one of the questions at trivia last night was which "northern California" city was the most populous and had been the capitol before that moved to Sacramento, and the answer (of course NOW I know) is San Jose, but...

when I lived in Santa Cruz (just over the hill from San Jose) I actually didn't consider myself living in northern California but in the Central Coast.

a technicality, I know, but NONE of us on our team (and they're all natives) were considering *anything* south of, say, Oakland.
