We haven’t been doing much night riding lately. After biking in to town to pick up a Father's Day card for two special dads, we have a fresh memory of one of our favorite things about night riding: There are usually far fewer cars on the roads!
Another favorite thing: Being prepared to easily take theft-prone items in with us when we went inside the card store, thanks to having an Ortlieb Vario Lite hybrid backpack-bicycle bag. "On Feb. 13, 2022, a similar incident occurred at Vistra’s Moss 100 facility, and this time, both #Vistra facilities were taken offline.
"Meanwhile, PG&E’s 182.5-megawatt Elkhorn facility came online in April 2022. Unlike both Vistra facilities, the Elkhorn’s batteries were not in buildings – they were in an array of 256 Tesla Megapacks on 33 concrete slabs.
In the early morning of Sept. 20 of that year, just over five months later, a fire broke out in one of #Tesla Megapacks at the facility, prompting the closure of Highway 1 and a shelter-in-place order for nearby residents. Though the fire only burned for six hours, the orders remained in effect until just before 7pm due to the risk of toxic smoke inhalation.”

OMG, this #Vistra battery fire keeps dying away and then coming back strong like some angry, vengeful spirit! (Came back larger with a second fire this afternoon).
I think it's telling us we should NOT have allowed those battery plants to be built in our beautiful wildlife nature preserve. And what about the crops and workers in nearby fields? Can we take a hint?!! This is the fourth fire at that plant.

"This is not the plant's first fire; it experienced another in September 2022, when an individual battery storage unit rose in flames.
"Operations resumed in December 2022 after the Energy Safety Response Group (ESRG), a third-party energy safety consultant, finalized a review of the situation. PG&E, in conjunction with Tesla, the battery provider, 'implemented corrective actions and conducted extensive system testing,' as PG&E announced.
"The exact cause of the current incident at the plant remains uncertain. Still, ESRG's 2022 report identified that last year's fire was sparked by 'an equipment installation issue resulting in water ingress caused the battery's cells to overheat and catch fire,' according to the press release.
"Due to the blaze, #Highway1 near the site has been shut down, as reported by KION concerning the California Highway Patrol."

"The [#LithiumBatteryFire], which is more than 300 miles away from and totally unrelated to the Southern California wildfires, was 'raging out of control Thursday night, sending up huge flames and clouds of hazardous black smoke,' according to local news reports.
"It was reported at the #MossLandingPowerPlant located in northern #MontereyCounty around 3 p.m.
"Evacuations of about 1,500 people were ordered for the area, and the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office called other agencies in the county to help with the emergency.
"The facility, owned by #VistraEnergy, a Texas company, is one of the largest #BatteryStorage plants in the world, The Mercury News reported. It holds tens of thousands of #LithiumBatteries, which are used to store electricity generated from #SolarPower.

"The plant is located on the site of a now-shuttered 1950s-era PG&E Moss Landing natural gas plant, which was converted into a BESS facility in 2020. The site can store a total of 750 megawatts of energy, which is sold to PG&E, The Mercury News reported. A separate 182-megawatt battery storage plant that has 256 #Tesla '#Megapack' battery packs is also located on the north side of the site. According to The Mercury News, that facility did not appear to be burning.

What’s on our mind? Gratitude for Public Works Department crews. We’d not biked Garden Rd near Fairgrounds / Mark Thomas intersection in over a month. When we did last night, we came upon a happy surprise: City of Monterey’s Public Works Dept had remedied uplifted pavement we reported last summer.

In August we gave a short in-person presentation on “ABC Quick Check.” In the process we showed attendees our portable pump and the pump we use at home, a Park floor pump. When we commented that you don’t always have to have an ample budget to get quality tools—that we’d bought our Park pump used at a Goodwill store—some asked which Goodwill. It was this one, on West Broadway in the Monterey County city of Seaside. While biking last Sunday, when we paused out front of that store, there was another person who bikes apparently scouting their inventory. :)

DMC is in city of Monterey. The city’s bike-aware leaders, e.g., Mayor Tyller Williamson and Council Member Gino Garcia (whose day job is working for Ecology Action of Santa Cruz / Lets Modo) may be unaware that we formerly had in that Shopping section of the Tips guide a detailed map listing all Del Monte Center bike rack locations. Their ED at that time himself biked to work! Why is that detailed map no longer in our guide? Our favorite sort of visitors are people who (if able) bike, walk, skate, scoot, or use public transportation. We met two such #Monterey County visitors on 10 Feb 2024: this couple from #Fresno who'd rented #bicycles to enjoy #cycling along the #PacificGrove shoreline and elsewhere. They were grooving on the sunshine after all the recent rains!
