From report by Sara Rubin, #MontereyCountyNow:
“The project is closing the gap in an 18-mile, Class-1 bike trail that runs from Castroville to Pacific Grove,” City Manager Vibeke Norgaard told the TAMC board on Aug. 31.
It was the first public presentation on a project that has been contemplated since 1982, and now has public grant funds in the pipeline to build the $12 million project.

From Los Padres NF on FB (Info only): CURRENT SITUATION:
On the southern edge of the fire, work is complete on containment line from DeAngulo Ridge to Partington Road and on containment line on the Coast Ridge Trail southeast toward Highway 1. Work overnight continued behind homes east of Highway 1, with crews cutting handline to create a continuous containment feature behind them. The fire has shown very little activity there for several days. There is fire confirmed over the Pine Ridge Trail system, with rollout toward the Big Sur River. However, the fire remains to the south of the Big Sur River, which is a key containment objective. Dozer and handline have been completed to ensure that containment remains secure.
The eastern side of the fire was active overnight in the area of Olmstead Mountain. Containment lines previously opened with equipment are being reopened and opportunities for suppression closer to the fire’s edge are being assessed. Residents in Carmel Valley and in communities with access to previously utilized lines can expect to see equipment entering the area today.
WEATHER:
The trough of low pressure off the coast will continue to bring cooler and wetter conditions to the coastal side of the fire for the next several days , while the area above the marine layer and to the east of the fire can expect warmer and drier conditions with afternoon sunshine possible.EVACUATION ORDERS:
- MRY-F023
- MRY-F025
- MRY-F026
- MRY-F027
- MRY-F028-A
ROAD CLOSURES:
Highway 1 remains closed for public and firefighter safety. The northern closure is at mile marker 45.1 near the Big Sur Bakery, and the southern closure is near mile marker 37 at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park.

“'Seth Pollack spent his life teaching people how to see clearly – to look past easy narratives, sit with complexity, and do the hard work of understanding. It is a painful irony that in the days after his death, the story of how he died became one of those easy, inaccurate narratives.'
"They [Pollack’s family] are referring to a CHP [California Highway Patrol] statement immediately following the crash that Pollack was on the wrong side of the street, later determined to be unfounded.”

Bicycling in Pebble Beach is temporarily restricted Saturday and Sunday, August 16-17, 2025 due to Concours d'Elegance. Also, although not restricted Monday through Friday, August 11-15, Pebble Beach Company does not recommend biking inside Pebble Beach on those five dates as well. More about biking Pebble Beach: https://bikemonterey.org/biking-17-mile-drive.html
Watch out for big trucks! Monterey County roads will see many more around August 8-17, hauling cars for “Car Week.” Our Summer Bike Buzz https://bikemonterey.org/bike-buzz-summer-2025-news-from-bicycling-monterey.html updates include a reminder about Cycling Savvy’s tips on “The 6 Things You Need to Know” to stay clear of a truck’s danger zones. https://cyclingsavvy.org/what-cyclists-need-to-know-about-trucks/

"The Vistra fire in Moss Landing caught everyone by surprise. What we can learn from it?” —David Schmalz, #MontereyCountyWeekly cover story
"On Feb. 13, 2022, a similar incident occurred at Vistra’s Moss 100 facility, and this time, both #Vistra facilities were taken offline.
"Meanwhile, PG&E’s 182.5-megawatt Elkhorn facility came online in April 2022. Unlike both Vistra facilities, the Elkhorn’s batteries were not in buildings – they were in an array of 256 Tesla Megapacks on 33 concrete slabs.
In the early morning of Sept. 20 of that year, just over five months later, a fire broke out in one of #Tesla Megapacks at the facility, prompting the closure of Highway 1 and a shelter-in-place order for nearby residents. Though the fire only burned for six hours, the orders remained in effect until just before 7pm due to the risk of toxic smoke inhalation.”

March 5 update from District 2 Monterey County Supervisor Glenn Church on the Moss Landing battery fire.
“Current monitoring focuses on hydrogen fluoride and particulate matter, but traditional air quality indexes measure ozone, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and particle pollution —not heavy metals. However, when batteries burn, it is reasonable to assume that small heavy metal particles are released into the air.”

"Technologies that help us address climate change still have the potential to cause harm, and taking that seriously is crucial." https://www.technologyreview.com/2025/02/13/1111843/battery-fire-moss-landing-power-plant/
“The EPA tested for one of the pollutants that measures air quality index – particulate size. This is what the Monterey Bay Air Resource District (MBARD) does when it produces an evaluation of air quality. Neither agency tests for heavy metals. Heavy metals testing was done by Dr. Ivano Aiello of the Moss Landing Marine Labs around the Elkhorn Slough and by the California Department of Toxic Substances Control with Monterey County Environmental Health Department.”—Supervisor Glenn Church, District 2, Monterey County Board of Supervisors https://mailchi.mp/co/supervisor-churchs-february-2025-newsletter?e=68a4a27afc

“After the fire, his lab tested the soil in a 2-mile radius of the plant, which is near the Elkhorn Slough estuary. After taking multiple measurements from about 100 locations, his lab observed a hundreds-fold rise in the concentration of the three toxic heavy metals along the top layer of the soil….Aiello’s team is also turning to assess the impact of their findings on the Elkhorn Slough, which he said is the second-largest estuary in California and one of the most diverse and essential ecosystems for hundreds of fish and bird species. It acts as a carbon sink and buffer for sea level rise.”

We encourage a thorough read of newsletter released this eve by District 2 Monterey County Supervisor Glenn Church on the Moss Landing battery fire. https://us21.campaign-archive.com/?u=b91306d327dee38ad97c7fa73&id=937ea505d1
"When I took office two years ago, I accepted several tours of the #Vistra facility, including a tour inside the building that burned. The facility and its safety systems appeared impressive. I was personally given the guarantee that a fire similar to the one that occurred in 2022 at the neighboring PG&E / #Tesla operation could not happen at Vistra. We know that is not true. This disaster is worse.
…
"There has been some great #news reporting on this story, but there have also been some errors. There is a great deal of #misinformation being spread. That is because there are a lot of unknowns. I would urge everyone to doublecheck every source."#MontereyCounty #MossLanding #BatteryFire #energy #EnergyStorage #Vistra #PGE #LocalGovernment #LocalControl

It is time for the citizens to organize and have this plant moved somewhere, not on the shores of a marine sanctuary where it impacts wildlife, farmland, and commerce on Monterey Bay.
#ElonMusk #MossLanding #MontereyCounty (2/2) -
@Thebratdragon It seems the #Tesla batteries were involved in the fire. And it seems that #PacificGasAndElectric also had a hand in "ensuring safety" at the facility. And they want to keep #DiabloCanyonNuclearPlant going? smh
"This is not the plant's first fire; it experienced another in September 2022, when an individual battery storage unit rose in flames.
"Operations resumed in December 2022 after the Energy Safety Response Group (ESRG), a third-party energy safety consultant, finalized a review of the situation. PG&E, in conjunction with Tesla, the battery provider, 'implemented corrective actions and conducted extensive system testing,' as PG&E announced.
"The exact cause of the current incident at the plant remains uncertain. Still, ESRG's 2022 report identified that last year's fire was sparked by 'an equipment installation issue resulting in water ingress caused the battery's cells to overheat and catch fire,' according to the press release.
"Due to the blaze, #Highway1 near the site has been shut down, as reported by KION concerning the California Highway Patrol."
