  1. From report by Sara Rubin, #MontereyCountyNow:

“The project is closing the gap in an 18-mile, Class-1 bike trail that runs from Castroville to Pacific Grove,” City Manager Vibeke Norgaard told the TAMC board on Aug. 31.

It was the first public presentation on a project that has been contemplated since 1982, and now has public grant funds in the pipeline to build the $12 million project.

From CAL FIRE BEU / CAL TRANS District 5 on FB: Heads up travelers through the Big Sur area. A one-day maintenance project is happening tomorrow along Highway 1, helping us keep the roadway safe and flowing smoothly. Work will take place at Torre Canyon where crews will be removing rock piles left from recent Timber Fire operations. This work will clear pullouts, restores proper drainage, and reduces the chance of rocks reaching the travel lane. Expect 10–15 minute delays between 9 a.m.–3 p.m.

kazu.org/kazu-news/2026-08-11/ “There's never a traffic jam on the recreation trail,” Koesel said. !?! We appreciate his intent, and beg to differ. Our photo posted here is from 2010 — scroll to end of bikemonterey.org/tips-for-tour, and that section of trail gets far more congested now. That’s another reason we need far more such bikeways—i.e., Class 1 as well as Class 4 with a physical barrier (protection from cars).

  11. Excerpts from #SalinasValleyNow story by Erik Chalhoub, "Más jóvenes se están sumando al ciclismo de montaña, y las oportunidades para hacerlo están creciendo a nivel local.” / "More young people are hopping onto mountain bikes—and the opportunities to do so are growing locally.”

“Riding bikes can increase focus, improve mood and improve both physical and mental health. It’s important to get kids to spend more time in nature.”

Asst coach with #Salinas High School Cowboys Mountain Bike Team, points to tight-knit community of #MountainBiking community, especially on display during #FortOrd race.

“It’s very supportive. Everybody cheers for everybody else.”

For kids who don’t have a bike, no problem—they’ll be given one for the race.

“It opens the door for kids who may not have a group, but they’ll find a group within the team.”

“They spoke so positively and energetically about being out there with friends in nature and away from screens.”

  12. “'Seth Pollack spent his life teaching people how to see clearly – to look past easy narratives, sit with complexity, and do the hard work of understanding. It is a painful irony that in the days after his death, the story of how he died became one of those easy, inaccurate narratives.'

"They [Pollack’s family] are referring to a CHP [California Highway Patrol] statement immediately following the crash that Pollack was on the wrong side of the street, later determined to be unfounded.”

  14. #PacificGrove Council discusses regulation options for e-bikes” by Kyarra Harris, #MontereyHerald

"Currently, e-bikes are now allowed in Perkins’ Park, Lovers Point Park, Pacific Grove Golf Links, El Carmelo Cemetery, and the property ocean-side of Ocean View Boulevard to 17th Street. The exception is on the paved portion of the recreational trail.

“There are regulations in place like e-bikes not being allowed to go over 12mph* or for people to only travel two abreast as to not block the other side of the trail.”

There’s a lot of farmworkers here,” said Victoria Gomez, a lifelong Salinas resident at the city hall protest. “These people that are here, planting and harvesting vegetables and fruits for us and for the rest of the country. "California Department of Transportation, known as #Caltrans, said that the state had spent more than $370 million on fixing the #highway after #ExtremeWeather events in the past seven years….Building the road on unstable terrain took ingenuity. 21. Thanks to Pam Marino @pammarino for bringing to our attention “Walk Every Street PG” montereycountynow.com/news/loc (January 23, 2025), and kudos to founders Ashley Edge and Amy Burkman. As Edge said, “You can drive all you want but to really know a place, you need to walk it.” (And that’s similarly true for people who bike vs drive.)
We encourage walking groups to consider including “walk audits” to identify for cities where infrastructure improvements are needed. As highlighted in the Resources / Los Recursos section on bikemonterey.org bikemonterey.org/resources, AARP teamed up with the League of American Bicyclists to create Bike Audit Tool Kits, in English and Spanish, and AARP has Walk Audit Tool Kits too. Print copies or downloads are available free. Anyone can do a walk or bike audit. In fact, the best are done by people with varying perspectives and mobility needs.
