  15. Our gratitude to @JohnMcCarthyEsq for his generous donation today in support of Bicycling Monterey’s advocacy projects. This week our advocacy work has ranged from statewide advocacy efforts as Monterey County’s local #CalBike partner to communications with journalists to teaching bike-friendly driver’s ed, and more. Having John and other donors value this work is not only essential on a practical level, it also boosts our spirits, fueling us in continuing to do all we can as a bicycling advocate. bikemonterey.org/about/financi

John has also had our back in another way—as a volunteer: He’s researched California law and confirmed that our understanding was accurate about an issue sometimes wrongly reported by media.

John’s professional focus is motorcycle wrongful death and catastrophic injury cases in Northern California: californiasmotorcyclelawfirm.c

  16. After providing introductory bike-friendly drivers training today—to all youth at the Monterey County Probation Department Youth Center—we made our typical rounds in our county’s seat and largest city. Today that included Acosta Plaza and two local bike shops on our route.

We also stopped to snap photos of some of our favorite infrastructure (short of bikeways with a physical barrier): Bike boxes at intersections, like this one on West Alisal Street at Lincoln Avenue, Salinas.

  17. Today’s bike ride followed an afternoon of #CalBike Policy Advisory Council meeting, then reviewing AB 2168 (ATP Reform) and SB 569 (Bike Lane Integrity), and other office tasks. Evening was garden work until dark. Outdoors is definitely our favorite place to be, no matter what we’re up to. (And yes, took our laptop outdoors for the meeting too.)

Thank you, dear earth, for renewing us without fail!

No town errands today, so our ride was simply in our rural area. We saw only one other person biking—a young man wearing a Salinas High School Cowboys Racing MTB team jersey. Had a nice chat, including about some spots where bIke lockers are needed. See some Cowboys history here: bikemonterey.org/category/chil.

  18. Today a local man whose family has one Rad bike and whose other bicycles are, to his great satisfaction, Tern bikes, brought this Rad news to our attention. He’s bummed they don’t have ALL Terns. bicycleretailer.com/industry-n

That Rad news is another reason we’re grateful that two extraordinary bike industry leaders — Larry Pizzi and Dale Aguas — steered us in the right direction. Years ago Larry told us about Bosch batteries; and in 2024, Dale of @ternbicycles (which use Bosch batteries) pointed us to a #TernBicycles model very well suited to our needs, the #TernNBD. #Monterey Bay #LocalBikeShop Current eBikes assembled our Tern NBD P8i, and also provides 24 months of unlimited Standard Tune-ups + ongoing support and care.

We’re so glad to have the quality of Bosch and Tern, and also very happy with Current’s service. sfba.social/@bikemonterey/1166

  20. Often we’ve communicated with other #BikeAdvocates by phone, or online, long before meeting in person. That was the case with Paola Berthoin of Carmel Valley, and it was such a joy to meet her face to face on April 17 at the Fridays #FarmersMarket in Monterey (bikemonterey.org/tips-for-tour).

Paola, an #artist, has biked 20,267 miles, mostly local miles. For Paola, her bike is “a perfect alternative mode of #transportation!”

BTW, we share her concern—and that of #CalBike—"Don’t Punish E-Bikes for the E-Moto Problem”; take action: calbike.org/ab1557ab1942/

Those of you who followed @bikemonterey back when we were on the bird site, 2009-2022, may recall hearing Paola's name from us there, or on our website (e.g., bikemonterey.org/wp-content/up on bikemonterey.org/resources/bic).

Born in #London, England, she came to Carmel Valley in 1965 with her mother and three sisters. Learn more about Paola Fiorelle Berthoin: paolafiorelleberthoin.com/about

  21. “'Seth Pollack spent his life teaching people how to see clearly – to look past easy narratives, sit with complexity, and do the hard work of understanding. It is a painful irony that in the days after his death, the story of how he died became one of those easy, inaccurate narratives.'

"They [Pollack’s family] are referring to a CHP [California Highway Patrol] statement immediately following the crash that Pollack was on the wrong side of the street, later determined to be unfounded.”

  22. Our sympathy to the family and friends of Linda Theresse Munoz of Salinas.

Linda suffered fatal injuries after being struck on her bicycle by a truck, and then by two additional vehicles, while biking in Salinas on March 14.

We have no details on this collision so can’t comment about the circumstances except to say: #KSBW’s report ksbw.com/article/bicyclist-str mentions she was biking “in dark clothing.” High visibility apparel is not required by law, and while we do suggest it (bikemonterey.org/tips-for-tour), being visible can’t protect you from drivers who are texting, speeding, under the influence, etc.—as we experienced and pointed out last week sfba.social/@bikemonterey/1162.

We don’t know if Linda’s bicycle had the equipment required by California law for biking in the dark (see #9 in our Calif bike law summary bikemonterey.org/wp-content/up).

  28. Sept 28-Oct 1 is California Chapter of American Planning Association conference, in Monterey County. apacalifornia.org/ Conference theme is "WAVES OF CHANGE: Reconnecting #Communities.” Two of 13 mobile workshops are promoted as being via bicycle, and there's a bike in conference banner, and @ 1:00 in “APA California 2025 Conference Hype Video.” In Feb we were invited by a Santa Cruz County based planner to serve on a proposed bike-related panel at the conference; we urged him to instead invite #CalBike’s executive director or policy director (and he did). He later reported that his panel submission was rejected by conference organizers. :(

  31. At yesterday’s Vision Zero meeting for Monterey County, the challenges of Salinas Road were among topics discussed. In fact, on Wednesday, a Watsonville resident traveling by bike was going north on the shoulder of Salinas Road when he attempted to make a left turn and was hit by a GMC Yukon. The Yukon’s driver fled the scene. Good Samaritans assisted the injured bike commuter. Thank you to law enforcement; the driver has been arrested and faces felony #HitAndRun charges.

  33. March 5 update from District 2 Monterey County Supervisor Glenn Church on the Moss Landing battery fire.

“Current monitoring focuses on hydrogen fluoride and particulate matter, but traditional air quality indexes measure ozone, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and particle pollution —not heavy metals. However, when batteries burn, it is reasonable to assume that small heavy metal particles are released into the air.”
