In August we gave a short in-person presentation on “ABC Quick Check.” In the process we showed attendees our portable pump and the pump we use at home, a Park floor pump. When we commented that you don’t always have to have an ample budget to get quality tools—that we’d bought our Park pump used at a Goodwill store—some asked which Goodwill. It was this one, on West Broadway in the Monterey County city of Seaside. While biking last Sunday, when we paused out front of that store, there was another person who bikes apparently scouting their inventory. :)

BTW, Seaside’s West Broadway is tops in the county for number of conveniently located bike racks and also public benches. (See “Rest Stops” for why that matters. https://bikemonterey.org/rest-stops-people-who-bike-walk-or-otherwise-get-about-sometimes-just-need-to-sit-a-spell.html)

May 18, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. For teens and children, Kids Bike Safety Day event at Roberts Lake in Seaside (Roberts Ave at Canyon Del Rey Blvd), organized by Seaside Police Department. On a first-come, first-served basis, SPD will be giving away *FREE* bicycle helmets, lights, and bells provided by Transportation Agency for Monterey County. Event will include a short bike ride in the Roberts Lake area. For details, see poster below.

A mobile bike mechanic will be available throughout the event. Among many #Bicycling #Monterey projects that most people are unaware of is 1st example under Project #4, BICYCLING #EQUITY (scroll down our Summary of Projects page: https://bikemonterey.org/about/financial-donations/donations-some-ways-your-money-can-help).

Last week another #teen phoned us to make use of that project; today another teen called in same situation. We're glad to help. We salute these teens for not wasting their (or their family's) money on a #TrafficFine. Instead these #youth are "making lemonade out of lemons."

When #LawEnforcement officers deem a #citation appropriate, we appreciate #judges who offer an alternative to a #fine—such as the one we provide (see Project #4).

In case you're wondering: We appreciate #police officers who are into education instead of citation whenever appropriate. In honor of #WorldPoetryDay, here's a photo of my bicycle at Stevenson House in downtown #Monterey, taken on a sunny day in February 2010.

Today one of my brothers was lamenting #DaylightSavingsTime, and I automatically responded by reciting to him a poem by Robert Louis Stevenson, "Bed in Summer." (An excerpt: "In winter when the moon is bright, I dress by yellow candlelight. In summer, quite the other way, I have to go to bed by day.")

Grateful to our mom for reading "A Child's Garden of Verses" and other poetry to us. I treasure the old book she held when she first introduced us to Stevenson— "The Child's World: Volume 1, Stories of Childhood" (Chicago: The Child's World, Inc, 1954)—which included many other favorite poets too, e.g., Christina Georgina Rossetti and Rose Fyleman.
