  17. After providing introductory bike-friendly drivers training today—to all youth at the Monterey County Probation Department Youth Center—we made our typical rounds in our county’s seat and largest city. Today that included Acosta Plaza and two local bike shops on our route.

We also stopped to snap photos of some of our favorite infrastructure (short of bikeways with a physical barrier): Bike boxes at intersections, like this one on West Alisal Street at Lincoln Avenue, Salinas.

"During a campaign to improve the trail 20-some years ago, the Don Chapin Company donated gates and a portable toilet on the San Benito County side—which they continue to service, gratis, decades later. Chapin is hopeful about a current push by leaders at the California Welcome Center in Salinas to revive the trail and make it into more of an attraction.

  24. "About 12 percent of Monterey County’s oil and gas wells are located within 200 feet of a river or creek. This includes the Salinas River, which runs through the San Ardo oil field, and is a critical source of the county’s groundwater.

"In December 2025, over 4,000 gallons of oil and toxic wastewater spilled in the San Ardo oil field, just over a mile from where the Sargent Creek feeds the Salinas River. It is unconfirmed whether that spill was connected to an active or idle well.”

"Alongside the mobility hubs, the [Monterey County Zero Emissions Shared Mobility] study recommends creating #eBikeLibraries, which provide free or low-cost long-term lending for those who can’t afford an e-bike of their own. The study says the libraries would be ideal for farmworker communities and those with physical limitations who would benefit from a bike with an electric assist.
