  3. Our sympathy to the family and friends of Linda Theresse Munoz of Salinas.

Linda suffered fatal injuries after being struck on her bicycle by a truck, and then by two additional vehicles, while biking in Salinas on March 14.

We have no details on this collision so can’t comment about the circumstances except to say: #KSBW’s report ksbw.com/article/bicyclist-str mentions she was biking “in dark clothing.” High visibility apparel is not required by law, and while we do suggest it (bikemonterey.org/tips-for-tour), being visible can’t protect you from drivers who are texting, speeding, under the influence, etc.—as we experienced and pointed out last week sfba.social/@bikemonterey/1162.

We don’t know if Linda’s bicycle had the equipment required by California law for biking in the dark (see #9 in our Calif bike law summary bikemonterey.org/wp-content/up).

  5. "As a Salinas Union High School District teacher who used to bike to work, I have been hit by cars twice. Apparently, I just missed the educational video that was supposed to stop that from happening….I’ve spoken at City Council about being struck by vehicles. The solution offered? Social media campaigns and coloring books.” —Maggie Powers, #Salinas (Scroll down to “Crossing Guard.” montereycountynow.com/opinion/)

Better bike #infrastructure is obvs best solution! Enforcement & education also matter. (Please phone us to discuss.) We don’t know how much of “Federal grants awarded for active transportation...Salinas Police Dept, $195,000 (per KSBW Dec 2.
ksbw.com/article/central-coast)” may possibly have been used to create the following PSA, but we're not impressed—not just, e.g., referring to collisions/crashes as “accidents” (as if unavoidable), but not impressed by Salinas PD chief’s misleading comment about bicycles & crosswalks at 10 secs in youtu.be/DHospkA3ugY.

  6. "Protesters in Salinas join nationwide shutdown against ICE”—Report by Chris Hamilton, #MontereyHerald

“This is the salad bowl of the world. There’s a lot of farmworkers here,” said Victoria Gomez, a lifelong Salinas resident at the city hall protest. “These people that are here, planting and harvesting vegetables and fruits for us and for the rest of the country. I think they at least deserve some respect enough to speak up for them.”

  7. "Jan. 27, during the #Monterey County Board of Supervisors meeting, the Sheriff’s Office will present the latest Truth Act report, a transparency report about its interaction with ICE.
    ....
“‘Whistlemania,’ events where people create whistle kits that can be used to alert others about the presence of ICE, happens tonight from 5-6:30pm at the SEIU Local 521 Hall in #Salinas, with the next taking place Wednesday, Jan. 28, from 3-5pm at County Supervisor Chris Lopez’s office in #KingCity.”

  14. "In Salinas, more than 500 people packed two city blocks along South Main Street and Blanco Road….In Monterey, organizers estimated over 9,000 people attended the event at Window on the Bay Park.

“'It is extremely difficult to call bubbles and rainbows and little kids dancing and people bopping to drums and having a good time…as a war zone,’ said Meisner. 'If this is war, boy are we confused.'

"'America has always been a nation of immigrants,' said Louis Montano, a #VietnamVeteran who graduated from Salinas’ Palma High School in 1965. For Montano, protesting the current administration was part of 'an obligation to protect the #Constitution of the #UnitedStates of America … this is about our future.’”
