  1. We went on an incredible 32 mile road bike ride yesterday from north of Fisherman’s Wharf in Monterey CA south along the coast into 17 mile drive and down to our turn around point at the Pebble Beach resort.

The left photo is from Lover’s Point and the cove in Pacific Grove looking toward the south east to Monterey about 8:30 yesterday morning.

The right photo is part of our Bike Club at the Lone Cypress on 17 Mile Drive on our way to Pebble Beach and our turnaround point.

The original intent of the ride yesterday was to do a 40 mile fast paced training ride to the north of Monterey along the rec trail. But the weather was so nice we decided to go south and enjoy the coast at a more relaxing 13+ mph pace.

Sometimes you have to slow down and smell the roses.

  2. “E-bikes are part of a solution for our #transportation problems, our #climate problems and for our municipal #budget problems. And finding a way to rebalance our #infrastructure so that pedestrians, bicycles and cars can coexist is in everyone’s best interest.” - Monterey County Sustainability Program Manager Cora Panturad, as reported by Aric Sleeper, #MontereyCountyNow montereycountynow.com/news/loc #MontereyCounty #BikeTooter #cycling #biking #PacificGrove #ebikes

  3. #PacificGrove Council discusses regulation options for e-bikes” by Kyarra Harris, #MontereyHerald

"Currently, e-bikes are now allowed in Perkins’ Park, Lovers Point Park, Pacific Grove Golf Links, El Carmelo Cemetery, and the property ocean-side of Ocean View Boulevard to 17th Street. The exception is on the paved portion of the recreational trail.
    ...
“There are regulations in place like e-bikes not being allowed to go over 12mph* or for people to only travel two abreast as to not block the other side of the trail.”

  4. Enjoyed a really nice 26 mile bike ride this morning with friends on the Monterey Rec trail from Marina (CA) south to Lover’s Point in Pacific Grove, our turn around point.

The left photo is from Lover’s Point in Pacific Grove looking south west toward the point, Punta de los Pinos (Point of the Pines). The right photo is from the same spot turning 180 degrees and looking south east toward Monterey from Lover’s Point. The coastal fog was finally starting to clear from the coast. It was a typical Monterey Bay morning, fog at the coast finally clearing to a nice sunny day.

    10 July 1943 - 8 June 2025

Ophie was known and loved by the bike community as part owner of Winning Wheels Bicycle Shop in Pacific Grove 1986-2024. Some were unaware of her many other talents, e.g., “her patience and kindness with the children earned her the Anne Sullivan Award – a county-wide peer nominated award for educators who exemplify compassion and guidance with children with disabilities.” Learn more about Ophie: dignitymemorial.com/obituaries

Memorial mass Wednesday, June 25, 10 a.m. at St. Angela Merici Church, Pacific Grove stangelamericipacificgrove.org, followed by burial at El Carmelo Cemetery on Asilomar Ave cityofpacificgrove.gov/our_cit. 8. “My Canada” is one of our many favorite songs written by Manitoba native Dan Frechette, performed with Laurel Thomsen. We dig the lyrics and music, and we also dig the song because our precious grandchildren are Canadian Americans, and their dear mama a native of Canada.

This is a snippet of “My Canada” from Dan and Laurel’s May 5, 2025 performance at Good Old Days in Pacific Grove, California. Hear the full song: danandlaurel.bandcamp.com/albu

  9. Thanks to Pam Marino @pammarino for bringing to our attention “Walk Every Street PG” montereycountynow.com/news/loc (January 23, 2025), and kudos to founders Ashley Edge and Amy Burkman. As Edge said, “You can drive all you want but to really know a place, you need to walk it.” (And that’s similarly true for people who bike vs drive.)
We encourage walking groups to consider including “walk audits” to identify for cities where infrastructure improvements are needed. As highlighted in the Resources / Los Recursos section on bikemonterey.org bikemonterey.org/resources, AARP teamed up with the League of American Bicyclists to create Bike Audit Tool Kits, in English and Spanish, and AARP has Walk Audit Tool Kits too. Print copies or downloads are available free. Anyone can do a walk or bike audit. In fact, the best are done by people with varying perspectives and mobility needs.

  11. “I live in a box of paints.”

Yes, that’s Joni Mitchell (“A Case of You”).

And her words were echoed by Pacific Grove painter Susann Cate Lynn.
