Friday is farmers market day at Del Monte Center, Monterey. Don’t know who rode this bike to DMC today, just appreciate that they did. DMC is in city of Monterey. The city’s bike-aware leaders, e.g., Mayor Tyller Williamson and Council Member Gino Garcia (whose day job is working for Ecology Action of Santa Cruz / Lets Modo) may be unaware that we formerly had in that Shopping section of the Tips guide a detailed map listing all Del Monte Center bike rack locations. Their ED at that time himself biked to work! Why is that detailed map no longer in our guide? May 18, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. For teens and children, Kids Bike Safety Day event at Roberts Lake in Seaside (Roberts Ave at Canyon Del Rey Blvd), organized by Seaside Police Department. On a first-come, first-served basis, SPD will be giving away *FREE* bicycle helmets, lights, and bells provided by Transportation Agency for Monterey County. Event will include a short bike ride in the Roberts Lake area. For details, see poster below.

May 18 Fort Ord Dunes State Park Volunteer Bike Tour. All types of bicycles, e-bikes, or non-motorized active transportation (skateboards, scooters, etc.) are welcome to join. A mobile bike mechanic will be available throughout the event. This is a special Bike Month edition of California State Parks—Monterey District’s monthly volunteer project at Fort Ord Dunes State Park and is co-sponsored by California State Parks Foundation. Among many #Bicycling #Monterey projects that most people are unaware of is 1st example under Project #4, BICYCLING #EQUITY (scroll down our Summary of Projects page: https://bikemonterey.org/about/financial-donations/donations-some-ways-your-money-can-help).
Last week another #teen phoned us to make use of that project; today another teen called in same situation. We're glad to help. We salute these teens for not wasting their (or their family's) money on a #TrafficFine. Instead these #youth are "making lemonade out of lemons."
When #LawEnforcement officers deem a #citation appropriate, we appreciate #judges who offer an alternative to a #fine—such as the one we provide (see Project #4).
In case you're wondering: We appreciate #police officers who are into education instead of citation whenever appropriate. And we've done reach out https://bikemonterey.org/constables-of-the-peace-cops-on-bikes.html to #PoliceDepartments over the past 14 years to help more #MontereyCounty, and other, #cops be better prepared to help educate people who #bike.

In honor of #WorldPoetryDay, here's a photo of my bicycle at Stevenson House in downtown #Monterey, taken on a sunny day in February 2010.
Today one of my brothers was lamenting #DaylightSavingsTime, and I automatically responded by reciting to him a poem by Robert Louis Stevenson, "Bed in Summer." (An excerpt: "In winter when the moon is bright, I dress by yellow candlelight. In summer, quite the other way, I have to go to bed by day.")
Grateful to our mom for reading "A Child's Garden of Verses" and other poetry to us. I treasure the old book she held when she first introduced us to Stevenson— "The Child's World: Volume 1, Stories of Childhood" (Chicago: The Child's World, Inc, 1954)—which included many other favorite poets too, e.g., Christina Georgina Rossetti and Rose Fyleman.
