    ✧ Huhu beetle ✧

The huhu beetle (Prionoplus reticularis) is a longhorn beetle endemic to New Zealand. It is a large, visually distinctive species whose adults reach up to 5 cm (2 in) in length. It is widespread throughout New Zealand, occurring up to 1,400 m (4,600 ft) in altitude. Although it is unable to eat as an adult, the larv...

  8. There's a major water line break at Via Del Ray and El Caminito Del Norte in #Monterey. It's affecting water pressure and service from Seaside to Pebble Beach. It nearly flooded a house by the high school there was so much water dumping into the creek. Cal Am is shutting off pumps across the peninsula to try and get it to stop. The leak undermined the road. It's still flowing but not as much as when it broke around 240pm.

So I guess we won't have water until tomorrow. Neat.

  9. Big Sur Kate's recent post on the Timber and Plaskett fires, w/report from Keith Vandervere. Looks like the Plaskett has gone down to Hwy 1, and has also crossed onto Fort Hunter Liggett: bigsurkate.blog/

  10. #Monterey Peninsula just got a #redflagwarning. We lived through the brown skies of the Soberanes fire, and didn't get a red flag warning even then. And the Timber fire (granted it's about 23k acres now, and a new fire to the south (Plaskett fire) is some 40 mi. away. Now we're supposed to keep our go-bags handy because 20% possibility of lightning strikes as well. Yikes.

  11. We did a favorite road bike ride yesterday.

The map shows the 26 mile round trip road bike route from Fisherman’s Wharf in Monterey CA to Pebble Beach and back. Most of the ride is along the coast. As usual, it was overcast with a light wind. One gets used to overcast and wind when riding pretty much anywhere within Santa Cruz and Monterey along the bay.

Fisherman’s Wharf is a good place to start since there is usually plenty of parking and the parking rate is reasonable.

The Lone Cypress is a mile or two up 17 Mile Drive between the bottom 180 turn on the map and the Pebble Beach resort, our turn-around point.

  12. Aw, shucks. Except for all the passenger planes flying over my house bringing in rich tourists (and "air attack" fire-fighting airplanes heading to the Timber Fire), and souped-up pseudo race cars gunning it up the hill where I live, I entirely missed Monterey's Car Week! 😜

  13. Main focus of #Monterey British was #Jaguar, lots of lovely E-types. Also, great weather, nice fun crowd. Located at Carmel Valley Village. #ClassicCars #WeirdCarMastodon

  14. #Monterey British also had #Hagerty journalist Jason #Cammisa bring his Rover SD1 to show. He borrowed my Elise for his video about Lotus a few years ago so it was good to get caught up. #ClassicCars #WeirdCarMastodon

  15. #Monterey British event for #CarWeek today. Entered my #Lotus Elise and people amused themselves trying to get in and out of it for a photo. I amused myself trying to get in and out of a Caterham Seven. Nice customized Europa also in the Lotus section. #ClassicCars #WeirdcarMastodon

  16. Damn. There's an 800 acre #wildfire in Big Sur in rough terrain with a ton of tree fuel, and very difficult to access. This is near Nepenthe, Julia Pfeiffer Sur park, and the Henry Miller Library. Evacuations in progress. #Monterey #carweek

  17. Protip for all visitors to #Monterey #CarWeek: I know it’s super tempting, but do not rev your car and zoom out of the Lighthouse Ave tunnel. There is always—ALWAYS—a cop with a sound meter and radar gun at the exit.

  18. "'In an ideal world, we would have bike lanes with a physical barrier everywhere. That’s what’s needed. The reason more people don’t bike is primarily the fear of cars, and you can’t blame them.'”

A caller this morning, asking about Bicycling Monterey’s May 31 Bike Month event bikemonterey.org/bike-to-blueg, is from Pacific Grove. He plans to bike to our Monterey destination in time for the optional free pancake breakfast, served 10-11am. He asked about the bike train pick-up stations, e.g., Monterey Peninsula College. 25. Monterey Regional KMRY → San Francisco International KSFO

Because it was so much fun the day before, this time I went again with the Pilatus PC-12. From the Pacific coast, I headed inland, flying along the western edge of the Central Valley. On the way to San Francisco, I passed over the Bay and the Salt Ponds, which still shimmer in stunning colors.

Once again with an aircraft I haven’t flown before. With its 1,200 HP, the Pilatus PC-12NGX is definitively a class of its own. An exciting aircraft.

  27. We went on an incredible 32 mile road bike ride yesterday from north of Fisherman’s Wharf in Monterey CA south along the coast into 17 mile drive and down to our turn around point at the Pebble Beach resort.

The left photo is from Lover’s Point and the cove in Pacific Grove looking toward the south east to Monterey about 8:30 yesterday morning.

The right photo is part of our Bike Club at the Lone Cypress on 17 Mile Drive on our way to Pebble Beach and our turnaround point.

The original intent of the ride yesterday was to do a 40 mile fast paced training ride to the north of Monterey along the rec trail. But the weather was so nice we decided to go south and enjoy the coast at a more relaxing 13+ mph pace.

Sometimes you have to slow down and smell the roses.

  28. Enjoyed a really nice 26 mile bike ride this morning with friends on the Monterey Rec trail from Marina (CA) south to Lover’s Point in Pacific Grove, our turn around point.

The left photo is from Lover’s Point in Pacific Grove looking south west toward the point, Punta de los Pinos (Point of the Pines). The right photo is from the same spot turning 180 degrees and looking south east toward Monterey from Lover’s Point. The coastal fog was finally starting to clear from the coast. It was a typical Monterey Bay morning, fog at the coast finally clearing to a nice sunny day.

  30. Bicycling in Pebble Beach is temporarily restricted Saturday and Sunday, August 16-17, 2025 due to Concours d'Elegance. Also, although not restricted Monday through Friday, August 11-15, Pebble Beach Company does not recommend biking inside Pebble Beach on those five dates as well. 32. Bike riding in Monterey and Pebble Beach

We did a very nice tri-club bike ride on Sunday starting in Monterey (CA) heading south along the coast past Pacific Grove and into the Pebble Beach area along 17 Mile Drive and turning around at the iconic Lone Cypress as seen in the photo.

This part of the CA coast is spectacular with its rocky beaches intermixed with white sand. Along the route you pass two of the famous Pebble Beach golf courses, Spyglass Hill and Spanish Bay. And of course there are the houses. You’re either awed or appalled at their Hurst Castle-like gaudy excessiveness.
