  1. #CarWeek #MontereyCounty Thanks to California Highway Patrol, who took a hit - quite likely preventing harm to someone else. "A Porsche was stopped after going 90 mph in a 55 mph zone. After the driver was pulled over, the Porsche backed into a CHP patrol vehicle, CHP alleges.” - Ricardo Tovar, #KSBW ksbw.com/article/porsche-four- #SpeedLimits #SafeStreets #LawEnforcement #TrafficSafety #DrunkDriver #DUI #alcohol

  2. "South Carolina is now one of a dozen states with a statewide safety stop law. The details vary, but the basic principle has spread across red and blue states alike: people on bikes must slow down, yield to anyone with the right of way, and stop whenever safety requires it. Some states apply the rule only to stop signs; others also let riders proceed through red lights after stopping and yielding.” And in #SouthCarolina the bike friendliness extends further: "Right turns on red require slowing and yielding but not a complete stop.”

Thanks to the California Bicycle Coalition / #CalBike for their helpful chart, which includes:
    Arkansas
    Colorado
    Delaware
    Idaho
    Minnesota
    New Mexico
    North Dakota
    Oklahoma
    Oregon
    South Carolina
    Utah
    Washington
Also, Anchorage, Alaska and Washington, D.C.

  4. After providing introductory bike-friendly drivers training today—to all youth at the Monterey County Probation Department Youth Center—we made our typical rounds in our county’s seat and largest city. Today that included Acosta Plaza and two local bike shops on our route.

We also stopped to snap photos of some of our favorite infrastructure (short of bikeways with a physical barrier): Bike boxes at intersections, like this one on West Alisal Street at Lincoln Avenue, Salinas.

  5. Laws Every Scout Should Know

Being a Scout means more than camping, hiking, and earning merit badges. Scouts are also expected to be good citizens who understand the rules and laws that help keep our communities safe and fair. While Scouts are not expected to be lawyers, learning about important laws can help them become informed and responsible leaders. 1. 6. Our sympathy to the family and friends of Linda Theresse Munoz of Salinas.

Linda suffered fatal injuries after being struck on her bicycle by a truck, and then by two additional vehicles, while biking in Salinas on March 14.

We have no details on this collision so can’t comment about the circumstances except to say: #KSBW’s report ksbw.com/article/bicyclist-str mentions she was biking “in dark clothing.” High visibility apparel is not required by law, and while we do suggest it (bikemonterey.org/tips-for-tour), being visible can’t protect you from drivers who are texting, speeding, under the influence, etc.—as we experienced and pointed out last week sfba.social/@bikemonterey/1162.

We don’t know if Linda’s bicycle had the equipment required by California law for biking in the dark (see #9 in our Calif bike law summary bikemonterey.org/wp-content/up).

  8. California Assembly Bill 1014
    #AB1014
    #SlowSpeedsSaveLives

Just today a woman who bikes sent me a video showing a motor vehicle as it struck her at the end of West Broadway Urban Village in Seaside. We shuddered to think how much more she’d have suffered if it were going faster.

"So far, the bill has faced no registered opposition and has drawn support from a broad coalition, including the California Bicycle Coalition / #CalBike, Rural County Representatives of California and Streets Are For Everyone. Supervisor Chris Lopez has also shown support for the proposal.” —Report by KYARRA HARRIS in #MontereyHerald

  9. Does anyone know more about the status of #PROWAG? I saw that the Final Rule was issued, but MORPC planners told me today that the DOJ is still reviewing PROWAG and it's not yet enforceable?
