  1. #CarWeek #MontereyCounty Thanks to California Highway Patrol, who took a hit - quite likely preventing harm to someone else. "A Porsche was stopped after going 90 mph in a 55 mph zone. After the driver was pulled over, the Porsche backed into a CHP patrol vehicle, CHP alleges.” - Ricardo Tovar, #KSBW ksbw.com/article/porsche-four- #SpeedLimits #SafeStreets #LawEnforcement #TrafficSafety #DrunkDriver #DUI #alcohol

  3. "'In an ideal world, we would have bike lanes with a physical barrier everywhere. That’s what’s needed. The reason more people don’t bike is primarily the fear of cars, and you can’t blame them.'”

  5. Laws Every Scout Should Know

Being a Scout means more than camping, hiking, and earning merit badges. Scouts are also expected to be good citizens who understand the rules and laws that help keep our communities safe and fair. While Scouts are not expected to be lawyers, learning about important laws can help them become informed and responsible leaders. 1. The Scout Law and the Law of the Land The Scout Law teaches Scouts to be Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, […]

  6. Our sympathy to the family and friends of Linda Theresse Munoz of Salinas.

Linda suffered fatal injuries after being struck on her bicycle by a truck, and then by two additional vehicles, while biking in Salinas on March 14.

We have no details on this collision so can’t comment about the circumstances except to say: #KSBW’s report ksbw.com/article/bicyclist-str mentions she was biking “in dark clothing.” High visibility apparel is not required by law, and while we do suggest it (bikemonterey.org/tips-for-tour), being visible can’t protect you from drivers who are texting, speeding, under the influence, etc.—as we experienced and pointed out last week sfba.social/@bikemonterey/1162.

We don’t know if Linda’s bicycle had the equipment required by California law for biking in the dark (see #9 in our Calif bike law summary bikemonterey.org/wp-content/up).

  7. " The city [of [Santa Cruz] hopes to have 30% of its population commuting by bike by 2035 and plans to incorporate e-bikes into this vision, but wants safety measures in place first.

O"ne proposed initiative is a school permit pilot program that would require students to complete a safety course to park their bikes on campus. The city's principal transportation planner, Claire Gallogly, said, 'It's going to involve in-person education for our middle school students, as well as on-bike training, in order to get a parking permit sticker to be able to ride an e-bike and park on campus.’”

  10. Ever wonder why channelizer drums are used out on the roads?

    1. When all lined up together, they all act as one big deterrent that helps guide and channelize traffic within work zones.
    2. Being large, they act as a physical deterrent
    3. They have a large surface area for sheeting, which is especially helpful at night as it gives you a more reflective object to see
