Why #governments keep failing

“Too much of our economics in particular assumes today's systems are inevitable. Markets are treated as the answer to every problem, even though we know they are not.
Growth is always the unquestioned objective, although it is glaringly obvious that the limits of #growth are very real on a #finite planet.”

Although I agree with much of what the author says about Americans' fixation on mental health and the pathologization of ordinary life, his final recommendation reveals a problem in his thinking.
He urges us to find meaning in our lives by being less self involved and more geared to " outward-oriented action...because we feel the most meaningful when we are doing things that provide social significance — a sense that we matter, that we play an important role in other people’s lives."
I'm sure the author is right, but he shows little awareness of how a society that refuses to recognize a collective responsibillity to provide healthcare in an equitable manner, that treats those who work for a living as disposable "human resources", and that continually boosts the cult of individual success - how such a society may well leave so many with a sense that they don't matter, that they don't and can't play an important role in others' lives, and that anything other than the pursuit of narrow self-interest is a game for suckers.
I note that the Archbridge Institute , the thinktank of which the author is COO, ascribes a major role to markets in its promotion of "human flourishing" and hosts a piece touting the Chicago Boys and their " Chilean Miracle" as doubleplusgood.

Several US schools to install pepper-spraying drones to respond to school shootings, because guns don't shoot people, children do. And because public resources should never be made available to the Public for silly Free Stuff like education, medical care, affordable liveable homes, decent jobs, food and water and those kind of selfish Entitlements. And communities can't be allowed to take care of themselves (i.e., with resident-funded policing) for chrissakes; they must be overseen by the national-socialist technocrat investors.

Aside from drawing a line in the sand on the #Corruption issue (a good thing), the new #Labor premier of Victoria has made the same lazy declarations that are made by #Clueless govts all over Australia:
“Carroll is also pledging to be more pro-business and tougher on crime.”
Business support and Tough on Crime, we’ve only been spared the BS on Immigration… and this is supposed to be a #Labor govt? So the rot has spread from #AlboPM ‘s federal #NeoLiberalism to #Victoria (It’s been ensconced in #NSW for years; alive and blundering along in #QLD).
Goodness me folks, are we going to re-elect these dimwits to govt? Or are we really going to take the fight up to the major parties by voting anyone else but #labor and #LNP ? Nor, if I need to mention it, #PHON — we’re not THAT desperate.
Who’s with me on this?

There has never been any attempt to recover from Thatcher because the dominant ideology that affects everything in day to day life has no name. Imagine if in the USSR nobody had heard of communism. That's where the British are today.
The ideology of all #uk parties is #neoliberalism (Thatcher's ideology) - that's why!
Neoliberalism is the bedrock of British politics. It's everywhere. It's inescapable. And it's the number one reason why #brokenbritain exists.

The mess, the Commons, and the Paths Out of Mess
https://hamishcampbell.com/the-deathcult-is-a-historical-metaphor/ We spend a lot of time talking about crises as if they're sudden events, they rarely are, crises are the outcome of decades of accumulated social, political, economic and technological choices. The challenge isn't simply understanding why societies enter periods of instability, it's understanding how they find their way back out again. History suggests something important - entering crisis is often easier than leaving it - […]https://hamishcampbell.com/the-mess-the-commons-and-the-paths-out-of-mess/

@ScotInTraining I don't think that this is true - We can't 'tech' our way out of climate breakdown - we have to do less tech and live within planetary means. 'We' listen to tech bros with bridges to sell at our peril.
