  1. i do want to give a special shout out to my neighbors, who went through a similar type of situation 18 years ago and have taken over the lawyer search after seeing the difficulty i was having, thinking it would be easy because they had the experience from 18 years ago - it’s interesting to see this go down in real time, my three neighbors, struck by the realization that shit no longer works the way it’s supposed to work.

it used to work. and as far as everyone knows, it still does. it’s supposed to.

but it doesn’t. what are the odds that every lawyer in the Missouri bootheel just isn’t interested, like “no thanks” and that’s that? what are the odds?

i don’t know how to do odds math (i am stoned)

it’s not random tho. they all have the right to choose whether to accept clients based on their interests. their interests are $$$$ and also justice and to help people but financial security first, then justice and helping people. these are times of uncertainty, you see.

and because they think highly of their colleagues in the area, i’d bet that a lot of them figure somebody else will surely help, there are plenty of lawyers, someone will definitely help this person…

so it’s supposed to work like this but it doesn’t, and it’s nobody’s fault really. it’s nobody’s responsibility but mine. and the only responsible option is to get assistance from a lawyer. but it’s not their responsibility. it’s mine. so i must hire a lawyer…

nothing changed but everything changed. there was never any big decision made or official proclamation or announcement of any kind. over time, conditions change. and in this late stage of capitalism (the neoliberal era) things have been changing faster.

not just the economy, social and political conditions too.

people’s attitudes are changing. people are letting themselves go, character wise. they’re rewarded for it because it keeps us endlessly exploitable. society is atomizing. this dog eat dog society of winners and losers is atomizing. more and more people take on the mindset of eat or be eaten. and despite all this change, the only people who seem to have noticed it are scammers and traffickers and other such predatory individuals.

they know a lot and it serves their interests perfectly that nice respectable people think shit’s still exactly the way it was in 2008.

  9. @bestforbritain.org In case you've not figured out out yet that's every #neoliberal party: ReformUK, Labour, Conservative, SNP, etc

It's the same ideology across the pond in America, Neoliberalism is the fundamental ideology of both Republicans and Democrats

Neoliberalism= Rewarding and empowering established wealth with a strong economic ethic of rent seeking behaviour

Is a political ideology of the rich, by the rich and for the rich.

That is exactly where my greatest fears lie, because they do know. They also know which side of their bread slice is buttered. They know. Those walking around the halls of #power know what’s in it for them. Polies are no different (there are exceptional individuals who refuse to wield power for their personal benefits but they are rare gems) and they, left and right, will push the boundaries as far as we let them. Politics is a power relationship activity — for better or for worse.

Wondering it single term govts would fix this. If not it would at least give more people the chance to get rich off all our backs.

  15. In his latest post, Professor #RichardMurphy sets the record straight on the meaning of #Capitalism. As he points out, Capitalism **is not** #NeoLiberalism. It’s a short post, easy to read and full of insights.

I see confusion about what capitalism is thought to be all over #fedi conversations and I believe that applying PRof Murphy’s definition would go a long way to inform our discussions about whether capitalism can be changed for the better good or just trashed for a better system altogether.

“Capitalism is an economic system built on a simple but rarely questioned assumption, which is that capital has the ultimate claim on the financial rewards an enterprise generates.

That assumption is so deeply embedded in our economic thinking that we hardly notice it. A capitalist business employs people, buys goods and services, pays interest and meets its other costs. What remains is called profit, and that profit belongs to the owners of capital. Labour is treated as a cost to be deducted on the way to calculating that return.

There is, however, nothing natural about this arrangement. It is not an economic law. It is a choice about how businesses are organised, whose claims have priority, and ultimately who has power.

That is the issue I want to explore here, but doing so requires an important distinction. Capitalism is not the same thing as neoliberalism, which I have defined in a separate glossary entry. Capitalism existed long before neoliberalism, and understanding the difference between them matters if we are to decide whether capitalism can be reformed, or whether something more fundamental has to change.”

  16. I normally like reading #BernardKeanes who writes for #CrickeyNews because he has political nous and knows how to get under the political class’ skin. In this article he clearly has his hand firmly on the political tiller but I cannot say the same for his views on economic matters.

I’m afraid, whatever Keanes has written in the past about the insanities of #NeoLiberalism and the #TrickleDownEconomics it espouses, he couldn’t be further from the light when he advocates a return to positive #Budget balances by reducing Govt spending. If the last 40 years of #NeoClassicalEconomics has shown us anything it is the #Austerity policies simply exacerbate the ill-effects of the deregulated financial markets and offer no solution to working class woes or society as a whole; unless it is **More of the same** which we all know does not work. It is also clear that Keanes errs in thinking that managing a govt budget is akin to running a household budget - he hasn’t made that up, it’s what all economic dullards think it is. He really needs to lift his game on economics because he would have lots more to say then. In the meantime, he should leave commenting on the economy to experts like #GregJericho and his merry band.

  17. @GossiTheDog
Typical #NeoLiberalism playbook. #deregulate financial markets so we can do what we want (‘cause markets know best) and #Regulate financial markets when we’ve run out of venture capital investments so no one else can do as we did (let’s not advertise our cross-investments)

And yes: “prevent the bubble bursting just yet”, not until we increase our personal wealth to the max, because it will burst no matter what.

  18. Bunker as a metaphor

There is something revealing about the way powerful people talk about our future, when they imagine crisis, they imagine their escape. A luxury bunker, fortress border, a private city, a rocket or an #AI cloud. A place for the self chosen few to survive while everyone else is left outside to die. This is the "logic" of the #deathcult we all worship, if the world is breaking, protect yourself rather than repair the world. It should be obverse to us that this is is not really any actual plan […]

I must confess that the auhor *Lost* me when he advocated for major increases in the remuneration of politicians based on the falsifiable premise that higher salaries attracts more competent *managers*. False premises and undisclosed assumptions is the killer blow to any quazy-academic postulate, and the author fell for both of them IMO.

  21. #Money, the interesting thing about it is if you #exist in #poverty, you desperately need it for your day to day survival, then if your on the opposite end as in being a multi million or billionaire in reality money means nothing, because everything you own and do is leveraged off of debt that you one don't actually own and second can never actually satisfy, and the rules of the game are very different for those in poverty, and the rules are slightly different if your in the middle, but if your on top, the rules don't apply to you unless somehow your generation and hoarding of wealth imposes upon another top income holder, basically if your in poverty all the way to the bottom end of double digit millions, your beholden to the entire state if it where, and beyond that the entire state apparently is beholden to you and your ability to leverage debt, it is a rigged system of epic inequality and strongly embraces prejudice against the rest of us whom simply would appreciate the basics in life to be readily available without so much turmoil, and stress to our mental and physical wellbeing, money is an illusion of power and has left far to many of us going hungry, literally;

  22. What piece of shite to start the day on social media with. I ask you, what kind of #Grifting brainless entrepreneur would think that there is any sense in sucking up 40,000 megaliters of #water a year from an #aquifer in one of the driest parts of the land on the driest #Continent on earth to stand up an **Intensive** #horticulture business there?

We haven’t seen anything as brainless as this since the Ord River Scheme and cotton industries up North in WA. What kind of madperson even think it is a responsible thing to do? The people behind *Future Agribusiness* are nothing but #NeoLiberal predators looking to profit while raping the land. They don’t give a toss about *Country* and the fragile *ecosystems* on land *Never Ceded* . But I do. In fact, the mojority of this society does care about the land and what is bieng done to it in the name of #NeoLiberalism and #NeoColonialism.

Where is our *Environmental Protection Agency* in all this? Recovering from #Labor Govt death blows no doubt. There is no coming back from this kind of #pillage. Good grief, this is just insane. Here’s hoping the Courts (in reflecting the will of the broader society while adjuticating) will see true justice (in #fascist NT) applied to the benefit of all and not just a few madhats looking to cash up.

  23. We're living inside a full-blown #blinded ideology: 40 years of #neoliberalism layered onto the liberal consensus. That's a powerful #BLOCK on imagining different futures.

One way to push back is to name today's "common sense" for what it is: worship of the #deathcult.

On the grassroots tech path keep it simple: #openweb vs #closedweb. Use the #4opens to judge and compost #techcrap instead of feeding the #techchurn.

  29. @smitjo
Thanks John. It was a good segment. While there was no new information in what was presented, it all needed repeating because only through repetition will people start to get it and perhaps call for urgent intervention to right the wrongs (this is of course not limited the the issues being faced by the #TertiarySector ). There are a lot of issues vying for public attention, but it shouldn’t be beyond our capacity to look at them all and demand actions from those with the authority to act, stirr them awake to their responsibilities beyond mere electoral prospecting.

  30. The #mainstreaming is talking about the #deathcult – So why are you still waiting?

It took four decades of sleepwalking through #neoliberalism, cultural decay, ecological collapse, and social atomisation, but at last, the #mainstreaming is starting to talk about the #deathcult we’ve been worshipping.

Case in point: Steve Coogan – yes, Alan Partridge – is now publicly accusing Keir Starmer and Labour of “paving the way for Reform UK,” the rising hard-right threat. Here’s the article. It’s not satire, it’s despair. Coogan’s right, and a few years ago, such a […]

  31. On the Hebrew University’s invitation to Javier Milei and why it shouldn’t surprise anyone

#Argentine President Javier #Milei is expected to arrive in Jerusalem tomorrow to speak at the Hebrew University. Miley is admired by the Israeli right for his unwavering support of Israel and his promise to relocate the Argentinian embassy to #Jerusalem.

Since taking office, Milei has slashed over 70% of public university budgets, vetoing a law to ensure adequate funding and accusing faculty members at the University of Buenos Aires of corruption. The university’s budget has seen a 26% cut while the Argentinian secret service budget increased by 68%. Over 60% of university employees are now below the poverty line. While austerity measures might be argued for, Milei's actions appear to be a deliberate attack on education, #liberalism, and potential political opposition.

    Hebrew haaretz.co.il/opinions/2025-06

There have been growing calls to boycott the Hebrew University. Two Dutch universities have recommended suspending academic partnerships, citing the institution’s complicity in Israel’s genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.

The Hebrew University was found to be directly training Israeli military intelligence officers through the Havatzalot program. The university develops military technologies used in #Gaza through Talpiot program. The campus was built on illegally occupied Palestinian land in East Jerusalem and armed soldiers attend classes on campus, creating militarized environment.

  33. Are We Still in #Neoliberalism?

The past fifty years have been the era of unchallenged #marketdominance in all areas of life. But with the #globalupheaval brought on by the Trump #tradewar, are we seeing the #neoliberal order unraveling?

  36. "If you wanted the malaise Carter so eloquently bemoaned to metastasize, you could do worse than enacting the very policies his own administration implemented: cutting taxes, shrinking the welfare state, deregulating the economy, and turning away from the increasingly besieged labor movement. These measures paved the way for a few at the top to grow fabulously wealthy, while the majority of Americans saw their wages stagnate and their unions destroyed while suffering the consequences of the ultrarich’s reckless, self-serving decisions. Our Second Gilded Age of obscene inequality and atomization is the predictable result of such policies.

Jimmy Carter rightly warned against the country taking a path that would lead to “fragmentation and self-interest. Down that road lies a mistaken idea of freedom, the right to grasp for ourselves some advantage over others. That path would be one of constant conflict between narrow interests ending in chaos and immobility.” It is a bit of tragic irony that he helped lead us further down that road."
