  1. Teaching is an act of faith and hope. We plant our seeds and we water our gardens, but what grows there is often beyond our control.

  2. 🌍 In honor of #WorldRefugeeDay, we are showcasing films that provide a personal perspective on the experiences of migrants, refugees and displaced persons around the world. Our teaching materials for these films support students in practicing compassion and humility and making meaningful attempts to understand why refugees flee their homes, what their lives are like, and how everyday people can get involved to help. For grades 4-12.

  8. Inspire public service in your classroom and community with Resisterhood! Today we're highlighting Luis and Soraida Gutierrez, subjects of our new documentary Resisterhood from director Cheryl Jacobs Crim. Luis Gutierrez, a longtime Congressman from Chicago, led the charge to boycott the 2017 Inauguration, and his wife Soraida inspired their participation in the first Women’s March. Luis's story also highlights the Puerto Rican community and speaks broadly to the modern American immigrant experience.

The section on the Gutierrez Family in the Resisterhood Learning Guide explores the different ways elected officials can work inside a system or challenge it from the outside. It includes great extension activities to pursue civic engagement. For grades 10-12, higher ed and adult learning. It's great for campus screenings and community education, too!

    PRONOUNS
Allow me to share this perspective as a Panamanian who was raised in the Canal Zone and then came to the United States when he was 10 years old to attend private, Catholic schools until high school graduation. It was a sheltered upbringing, by design of course by loving parents. Still, I want to be clear about something often taken for granted.

I cannot support hatred of individuals. I do not accept skin color or LGBTQ+ as a reason for poor treatment of other people. This has never been more needed, especially in education and online spaces like this one, given the level of hate and bias.

Being who you are should not result in blind bias or hatred. I reject that and the frames that people have adopted that result in such hate.

As a Latinx who grew up in the Republic of Panama and then Texas, I have my own perspective.

My own identity as a cisgender (he/him/his), a bilingual/bicultural speaker, a person caught between two cultures, I have not suffered the slings and arrows of bias, prejudice that I can only ally with, including #Black #LGBTQ+ #IndigenousPeoples.

Since I speak and write in Standard English, I enjoy a level of white privilege due to my skin color (from my Swedish father) and my last name (“Guhlin” is Swedish, not Latino), I know that my life experience does not give me the authority to speak in more certain terms.

So, I offer my perspective in this space in a tentative way, and hope that I can learn with and from others.
