When kids don’t read widely and recklessly as a normal part of their lives, but we test them and judge them on their reading constantly and endlessly, we end up having to teach them explicit comprehension skills and lists of vocabulary words mapped to the test questions, so that an acceptable number of them can pass their tests and let the rest of us get on with our lives without worrying.

Today we're highlighting Luis and Soraida Gutierrez, subjects of our new documentary Resisterhood from director Cheryl Jacobs Crim. Luis Gutierrez, a longtime Congressman from Chicago, led the charge to boycott the 2017 Inauguration, and his wife Soraida inspired their participation in the first Women’s March. Luis's story also highlights the Puerto Rican community and speaks broadly to the modern American immigrant experience.

The section on the Gutierrez Family in the Resisterhood Learning Guide explores the different ways elected officials can work inside a system or challenge it from the outside.
