Alarms off. Another academic year finished: I think my 15th or 16th in teaching. I don't even have words for this one. The last few weeks: heat, football, Ofsted. I'm done. So done. #teaching #Education #edutoot #edutooters

When kids don’t read widely and recklessly as a normal part of their lives, but we test them and judge them on their reading constantly and endlessly, we end up having to teach them explicit comprehension skills and lists of vocabulary words mapped to the test questions, so that an acceptable number of them can pass their tests and let the rest of us get on with our lives without worrying.

Everyone has a formula or a system or a scheme to explain classroom teaching. Here's mine.

There's no substitute in the classroom for a well-structured question asked by someone who actually listens to and cares about the answer.

I hate to be that person, but just imagine a school that was getting Ofsteded this week, in July, so close to the end of term, in a heatwave, after half of staff and students being up all night on Sunday. And after a Yr6 Transition Evening last night. Imagine that. So, whose school might that be...? #Education #ukeducation #SecondaryEducation #Ofsted #edutoot #Edutooters

Just a massive congratulations to anyone in education - both staff and students - who got through this week in the UK. What a week. And with so, so much anti-teacher rhetoric in the media and online. We did our best. ☀️ #Teaching #SecondaryTeaching #Education #EduTooters #UKEducation

🌍 In honor of #WorldRefugeeDay, we are showcasing films that provide a personal perspective on the experiences of migrants, refugees and displaced persons around the world. Our teaching materials for these films support students in practicing compassion and humility and making meaningful attempts to understand why refugees flee their homes, what their lives are like, and how everyday people can get involved to help. For grades 4-12.

What is civic virtue, and how do we get it back?

It's kind of sad reading this article and thinking, yes, we used to have a world-leading curriculum here in NZ that was headed in the right direction of core competencies and student agency, and now... we are in a time warp back to the 50s, thanks to Erica Stanford and co. sigh.

🍎 To celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week, we're highlighting North Putnam, the award-winning documentary about what it means to be an educator in America today.
North Putnam depicts a year in the life of a rural school district and the community it serves. The film doesn't shy away from depicting the challenges faced by modern education, but is also is primarily a story of hope. Audiences come away feeling energized to develop effective strategies for their own communities and inspired by the administrators, teachers, students and community members of North Putnam, Indiana. This film is excellent for educator discussions and professional development! 📚🎬
The North Putnam Study Guide is designed for grades 7-12, adult/higher ed and teacher PD.
