  7. Associated Press: America’s tech-filled classrooms are facing a backlash against school-assigned devices. “After pouring billions of dollars into laptops, tablets and learning apps, many schools are facing a digital reckoning. Classrooms have become saturated with screens, and a growing number of parents, teachers and school districts are saying it is time to scale back.”

  8. Today in the classroom:

Back to school after I extended the long weekend for some much needed rest. We have this week and next remaining.

First year chem will watch a video on modern lithium ion batteries to round out electrochemistry. We may do some cyanotypes tomorrow, but I need to get my act together and prep lab materials.

Second year chem may synthesize aspirin today...or clean the lab. Not sure which yet.

  13. Ethel Lois Payne and the role of the Negro Press

She was called the “First Lady of the Black Press” which was also called the Colored Press or the Negro Press, years ago, which brings the famous paper The Washington Bee back to mind. The Negro press often reported on issues and events that went ignored, or glossed over with misleading euphemisms, in the mainstream press, which is part of the reason that Toni Morrison tells us that our work, as Black Women writers, is to bear witness, as Ethel Payne did, to that which has been buried in our history.

Today I learned (and tried to post this on TiL in Reddit, but was unable, for some reason…) that the Library of Congress website (among others…) has more information in text and video interviews about this important and relatively unknown lady. I was pleasantly surprised to hear of her via the name of the dog owned by a main character in a recent series, and it led me to think of the name of the dog “J’acuse” (small dog owned by character Fabienne Beriot in Netflix series Lupin: dans l’ombre d’Arsenne…). Good way to use side characters as history lessons in pop culture shows. There is also, thanks to the LoC for this note, a recent book available about her story, hopefully at most public libraries, about her: “Eye on the Struggle: Ethel Payne, the First Lady of the Black Press.” I’m adding it to my list now…

(Tired, so, not sure if I will edit chapter 53, which is the ending chapter, of Passing To Freedom today or not…)

  22. @tao Good talk!

I also found the report about an old study from a woman in the audience very interesting:

"[...]in the American classrooms, if a kid put his problems on the board and he made a mistake, uhh, you know, it was not seen as good thing. However, in Japan, when a kid put his work on the board and there was a mistake, the teacher made a big thing on how grateful the class was, because they could learn from that mistake. And so the whole difference in pedagogic outlook on praising what we can learn, from what a mistake was, was exactly what I got from what you were saying today."
