  1. The Best PD…

is the one that not only speaks to you in the moment but also stays with you and becomes part of your process.

I first heard of John Antonetti and his work in the 2020-2021 school year. I’m sure I’ve written about this before, but it hit me this week just how much his work has become part of my planning.

John is the author/co-author of several books: Writing as a Measure and Model of Thinking, 17,000 Classroom Visits Can’t Be Wrong, Powerful Task Design, and the upcoming The Architecture of Thinking, which I am anxiously awaiting.

I was introduced to his work through the Missouri Teacher Development System’s Teachers Academy. I’ve read all three of his existing books at least twice. I’ve now been fortunate enough to see him speak virtually twice and in person five times, soon to be six. I’ve presented PD sessions on his work twice.

His rigor matrix lives in my head. I find myself asking how I can +1 this task at least once a week. My partner and I were creating a connections game on Flippity after the history teachers introduced us to it. I loved the idea, but I started thinking about where it would fall on the rigor matrix, and since there are set answers, obviously it’s below the rigor divide. My next thought was: how can I +1 the activity? My first thought was to give the kids the terms only on paper rather than on the computer and let them sort the words and create their own categories. Almost immediately afterwards, I decided the kids could make their own connections board. So, I created a doc with a table for them to do just that. We’re going to try that either later this week or next.

This week we’re doing hexagonal thinking. I’ve seen it but hadn’t actually used it in class. I think I was hesitant because all of the examples I’d seen required providing all of the words for the kids. Then, this summer at a PD session, we did HT, but we were given a prompt first and wrote a word or phrase on a blank hex. That sparked my interest. So my partner and I are doing HT on superheroes this week. We are including a blank for each student. She then suggested that kids each get an additional word or two and go add them to another group’s layout. Both the blank and adding to someone else’s raise the rigor.

I love that I’ve found something that means I can often make a small change and increase the rigor and engagement of thinking. I can’t wait to see John in a few weeks and learn from him again. I can’t wait to read the new book he’s writing with Terri Stice and see what else I can add to my classroom routines to help my students improve their thinking.

  3. Need to come up with some guidelines on how teachers, not students, should use AI ethically. I have a few ideas but would love more if anyone here has thoughts about this.

  4. Today, #Singapore has its #TeacherAppreciationDay: #Teachers do have a day off, parents need to deal with their kids on their own.

A great way of making the hard job of a #teacher somewhat more catchy.

Many countries do have such an appreciation day en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teacher_ but not here in Austria.

Germany has its upcoming day on Oct 5th. Are schools closed on that day? 🤔

  9. My Chaos Demon

Every teacher has had them: that one child who changes the entire class. I’ve only ever had one who did it intentionally. Usually, they don’t know. They’re just being themselves.

This year, he’s a kiddo who clearly has been hand-held through everything. He also has clearly gotten away with more than he should through the years. When called out on his behavior, he smiles, and it’s clearly a “but I’m so cute” smile. Nope, sorry, kiddo, not gonna work on me. He wants someone to read everything to him and then give him the answers as well. Also not gonna happen.

This child avoids independent work at all costs, then wants to come to my room during other times to “work,” and then distracts that group and does no more work. Currently, he has a checklist he has to read to me and check off. This is 8th grade. These kids have to get ready for high school. This child is capable of independent work. There is no reason he can’t, except that he doesn’t want to. It’s going to be an interesting year trying to help him develop self-sufficiency.

  21. I WANTED GOD BY FRIDAY 💎

When I was young, I wanted the truth passionately.

    I read all the books.

I listened to all the teachers.

    I really tried to meditate.

I tried to forgive, though it was traditional forgiveness rather than ACIM forgiveness.

I had tried hard to become peaceful.

    Ha!

Sometimes I even became quite good at the practice.

Then pride would enter the field and ravage everything.

    It was not real yet.

I was too busy being young.

    Too hungry.

    Too frightened.

    Too unhappy.

Too caught in the body, the world, sex, food, ambition, approval, and the endless hope that something or someone outside me would finally make life feel complete.

    Preferably by Friday.

Unbeknownst to me, I was trying to get out of life before I had properly lived it.

    That was a mistake.

Young people are not supposed to spend all their time trying to escape the world.

They should be f**king each other.

    Making new art.

    Creating new music.

    Building new things.

    Making old mistakes.

    Loving badly, then better.

    Getting their hearts broken.

Buying furniture that they already know they will regret.

Learning what matters by wasting enormous amounts of time on what does not.

That is practically the entire curriculum.

The practice came later for me.

    Much later.

Not because I finally became spiritually special.

    Because I finally became ready.

    The body changed.

    Appetite changed.

The need to be someone began to loosen its grip.

Life had already had its way with me.

    Repeatedly.

    Profoundly.

    Without asking anybody’s permission.

And now, near the end of this life, looking toward the exit does not feel dramatic or sad.

    There is no white robe.

    No celestial choir.

    No soft lighting.

    It feels simple.

    I am already halfway there.

I may as well breathe consciously and enjoy the view.

  23. Hi! I need help.
I'm looking for a native English speaker to help me practice for my interview on Wednesday.
I can't pay now because neither my husband nor I have a job. I had to quit a job where they were crushing my soul. My husband can't work because he's in the final stage of sclerosing glomerulonephritis, a chronic and degenerative kidney disease that requires him to undergo dialysis every four hours.
But I promise on my word of honor that if I get the job, I will pay $150 out of my first paycheck.
If you think you can help me pass my interview, and you're willing to lend a hand... I'm eagerly awaiting your response.

  25. 🍎 To celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week, we're highlighting North Putnam, the award-winning documentary about what it means to be an educator in America today.

North Putnam depicts a year in the life of a rural school district and the community it serves. The film doesn't shy away from depicting the challenges faced by modern education, but is also is primarily a story of hope. Audiences come away feeling energized to develop effective strategies for their own communities and inspired by the administrators, teachers, students and community members of North Putnam, Indiana. This film is excellent for educator discussions and professional development! 📚🎬

The North Putnam Study Guide is designed for grades 7-12, adult/higher ed and teacher PD.
