I spent a large part of my life looking for special spiritual people.

Teachers.

Masters.

People with excellent lighting and suspiciously calm voices.

I truly believed they knew something I did not.

Usually, they did.

They knew how to become the most important person in the room without appearing to try.

Embarrassingly, I worshipped most of them.

Some discouraged it.

Some accepted it with remarkable inner peace.

That should probably have told me something.

The arrangement was simple.

They were special.

And I became special by recognising how special they were.

Everybody won.

Except sanity.

A Course in Miracles does not do that.

Jesus does not need a fan club.

Truth does not need robes, incense, a stage, a mailing list, or a photograph taken from slightly below chin level and placed on a special altar.

Truth does not make me special.

It does not ask me to become impressive.

It does not whisper that I am more awake than the people next door.

It simply removes the need for the whole performance.

Everyone leaves this world.

Some leave quickly.

Some take eighty years and several streaming subscriptions.

But everyone leaves.

So I no longer want relationships built on worship, rescue, dependency, possession, or spiritual celebrity.

I do not want to be anyone’s chosen one.

I do not want anyone to be mine.

That sounds exhausting now anyway.

I want the ordinary love of Atonement.

No pedestal.

No inner circle.

No one pretending to be the answer.

Just people meeting honestly, enjoying one another, and remembering not to start another f**king religion.

Sometimes I think I should have stayed with the Course all my life.

Instead, I travelled the world collecting spiritual detours like fridge magnets.

Still, I am here now.

And the souvenir shop is closed.

When I was young, I wanted the truth passionately.

I read all the books.

I listened to all the teachers.

I really tried to meditate.

I tried to forgive, though it was traditional forgiveness rather than ACIM forgiveness.

I had tried hard to become peaceful.

Ha!

Sometimes I even became quite good at the practice.

Then pride would enter the field and ravage everything.

It was not real yet.

I was too busy being young.

Too hungry.

Too frightened.

Too unhappy.

Too caught in the body, the world, sex, food, ambition, approval, and the endless hope that something or someone outside me would finally make life feel complete.

Preferably by Friday.

Unbeknownst to me, I was trying to get out of life before I had properly lived it.

That was a mistake.

Young people are not supposed to spend all their time trying to escape the world.

They should be f**king each other.

Making new art.

Creating new music.

Building new things.

Making old mistakes.

Loving badly, then better.

Getting their hearts broken.

Buying furniture that they already know they will regret.

Learning what matters by wasting enormous amounts of time on what does not.

That is practically the entire curriculum.

I haven’t posted any photos for a few days. We drove up to Little Rock, where one of my granddaughters is starting her first teaching gig — kindergarten at a school in North Little Rock. We went up to help her begin setting up her classroom, and most of our time was spent assembling furniture, organizing supplies, and putting together the tools she’ll need to teach those little ones.

I have to say, it’s startling how much teachers end up paying out of their own pockets if they want to give their students an excellent classroom experience. The upside is that it lets them shape the room around their own vision — the colors, the themes, the little touches that make learning feel magical. But when you walk into a classroom and see all those extras that make the space warm and inviting, remember: the teacher probably bought most of that themselves.

This was the week for getting her room ready, and as I mentioned, we were there to help. I’m not entirely sure she’s being paid for this setup time, but I hope so. She’s been working another job up near Branson all summer and had to take time off from that just to get her classroom in order.

She also had to establish a place to live near the school, and she’s settled into a nice little apartment not too far away. It’s her first real stretch of life away from home, and it’s a perfect example of how challenging those early adult steps can be. You have to figure out how to fund your life before the first paycheck ever arrives. The answer, of course, is working hard all summer and saving every bit you can. ...
