The USA is starting needless conflicts, there's an uprising against an occupying force, and I'm terrified for everyone I care about and here in Ireland, I start teaching ethics soon. I just requested approval for my first study on chemical education. We survive on small joys. #ITeachChem ⚗️ #ChemEd

With the Molarity simulation, students can qualitatively and quantitatively explore the relationships between the amount of solute, the solution's volume, and its #concentration. https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulations/molarity/ #iteachchemistry #chemed

Let's build a nucleus from protons and neutrons, and discover the effect on atomic number and species.
Determine how different decays change the nucleons in the nucleus.

@benroyce The link is to the script of a @NPR commentary from #WMOT in Murfreesboro/#Nashville that I wrote during the #BirdFlu scare in 2005/2006 - but archived in #Alaska.
It discusses some #chemistry and #biochemistry related to the #H5N1 labels of #influenza strains, but in a #SciComm way. Sorry, but #ChemEd is a 24/7 thing with me! 😂
Here are snapshots. 🤷🏻♂️

Ah, we are so fucked as a subject right now.

Happy Mole Day! Go learn (or teach) something about chemistry! https://www.moleday.org/ #ChemEd

Continuing my look at enolates, here is a #chemistry #ChemEd #chemistryeducation #SciViz #chemiverse summary of lithium enolates & enolate equivalents. This lays the groundwork for more control of selectivity (in all its forms). There is an obvious omission, enamines; they'll get their own summary. I hope this is useful

Ideen? Meine Websuche war bisher nicht erfolgreich.

Long time no posts ... Here is two lists of the aldol-like rcts that crop up in #ChemEd #Chemistry #Chemiverse UG teaching. V1 has some explanation/key steps; it's too big. V2 is just the list of the reactions. I don't like lists of reactions as they don't help students understand chemistry but some people seem to like them! You decide

A new
#Chemistry #chemiverse #ChemEd #SciViz
1pager. The 2nd of a handful covering aldol(-like) reactions. Here are some of the common named versions. Remember, they are basically all the same reaction (as more wittily referenced here https://bsky.app/profile/bagphos.bsky.social/post/3krbmkoit4q2t )
Enjoy (& corrections welcome)There are more at https://www.makingmolecules.com/handouts for those that are interested.

Here (https://www.makingmolecules.com/blog/aldolintroduction ) is the wordy version of the #chemiverse #Chemistry #ChemEd aldol summary (here https://mas.to/@nz_molecules/112200455052202824). For once, not too wordy so might be useful to some. The next 1 pager will be on aldol-like reactions (Claisen condensation & friends).

At last (apologies, it's been a long time), a new #Chemistry #ChemEd #SciViz #Chemiverse 1pager. The 1st of a handful covering the aldol addition/condensation. This is a simple intro. Hope it is helpful. If there are mistakes, contact me & I'll do the corrections (I didn't proofread! Naughty). More at https://www.makingmolecules.com
Hopefully new ones will be a bit quicker in appearing (but no promises) -
The full text version of last 2 #chemistry #ChemEd #SciViz summaries on enols/enolates (here https://mas.to/@nz_molecules/111883243941327628 & https://mas.to/@nz_molecules/111804033475896858 ) can be found here https://www.makingmolecules.com/blog/enolsenolates
It's too detailed to be honest but I write full versions to know what I need in the summary
#chemiverse -
As promised, the next https://www.makingmolecules.com #ChemEd #Chemistry #SciViz #chemiverse 1pg summary is about enolate formation & simple reactions. This is just the basics. There will be more covering aldol etc then all the various selectivities. Until then (I have lots of writing to do), enjoy
-
1st of the year! Summary of the basics of enols & their reactions. This #ChemEd #SciViz is meant to be an aide-mémoire not a detailed description. It was meant to include enolates as well but I've written too much! So there will be a 2nd one. Must learn to be more succinct! Enjoy
Turns out I waffle, hopefully having noticed this I'll be more succinct (& faster) in future! Current plan, is enolates, then the blog version before moving onto the basics of aldol & related reactions.

This is my version of the classic 'what mechanism, SN1, SN2, E1 or E2, is operating?' table found in many a textbook or lecture course. The classic cliché 'if I had more time this would have been shorter /better' is unfortunately true. It is too cluttered, &, more problematically, I don't believe that the undergraduate course/instructors obsession with substitutions/eliminations (of alkyl halides) is the best way to teach org chem
Hopefully still useful. Enjoy.

⚛️We are excited to announce the publication of Build a Nucleus HTML5!

The full text version of last week's #Chemistry #ChemEd #SciViz summary of elimination (here https://mas.to/@nz_molecules/111400605317624711) is now available (https://makingmolecules.com/blog/eliminations). It is a little more comprehensive & also has the standard comparison of SN1, SN2, E1 & E2. Hopefully it is useful.

I'm all grown up & have left university! After 24 years as an academic in the UK & NZ, today is my last day. Good news (for me) is that I do actually have a new job to go to on Monday (time to see if chemistry is useful in the real world). The MakingMolecules 1pagers will slow down for a bit as I get up to speed in a new line of work, but they will continue...🤞
#Chemiverse #ChemEd #Chemistry -
Sorry for neglecting this for a couple of weeks but here goes ... The obvious follow up to substitution ... elimination. I stress that these #chemistry #ChemEd #SciViz are aimed at UG. They do not cover some of the nuances that active researchers enjoy but hopefully they are a good starting point (and bigger hope 🤞, they don't have mistakes!).
