  1. #WritersCoffeeClub 5/16. What's a writerly risk you've taken recently? Did it pay off?

Unless you only write for yourself, writing is inherently risky. You're risking your well-being by investing time in something when you could be working a day job or second gig. You're risking your reputation or sense of self by inviting someone to read what you've written.

In my case, a financial risk I took was handing out a bunch of early ready copies of my latest book, Neon Citadel. I would say in general the risk wasn't worth it, but I did just get my first review from one of those early readers, so maybe it's turning around?

  6. #WritersCoffeeClub #WCC 2026.05.16 — What's a writerly risk you've taken recently? Did it pay off?

Two. One is the focus on the life, loves, and friends of the protagonist and to do it more intimately than I usually do, and second backgrounding some of the action, ultimately to make it a cozy yet spicy mystery sf novel. I think it is working out, but until I complete the first draft, I dunno.

  11. #WritersCoffeeClub May16 What's a writerly risk you've taken recently? Did it pay off?

This year, I totally abandoned the re-write I was attempting to do last year on Our Little Secret. I went back to what the original manuscript was about instead of continuing the new theme I had attempted. It has certainly paid off, and as a bonus, I was able to still use at least one chapter of new material I wrote last year. So win-win.

  15. #WritersCoffeeClub May16 What's a writerly risk you've taken recently? Did it pay off?

The biggest risk I've taken since Nov 2024 is deciding to walk away from erotic romance and pursue writing the stories I wanted to write. I think it's paid off. I feel better about my writing, am not as burnt out with the creative process, and am marginally less afraid the regime will put me in a camp.

More recently it's just following where the muse takes me that's been my biggest risk.

  20. #WritersCoffeeClub May 16 What's a writerly risk you've taken recently? Did it pay off?

I don’t want to spoil much, but there’s a big shift in my current WIP, a sequel to Crown of Horns, and according to my beta readers they were happy with the result 😁

  25. #WritersCoffeeClub May 16: What's a writerly risk you've taken recently? Did it pay off?

A: Isn’t it all risk? Risking money, self belief?

I did ask another writer for a blurb. And they said they would blurb.

So, I guess, yes. That’s a promissory note on payoff.

  29. #WritersCoffeeClub May 16: What's a writerly risk you've taken recently? Did it pay off?

I can't think of any, honestly. I've looked back over my notes for the past month-plus and I don't see anything that looks like any more of a risk than anything else. 🤷🏻

  34. #WritersCoffeeClub May 16: What's a writerly risk you've taken recently? Did it pay off?

I started working with a development editor for my new WIP, pretty much from the start of the project. We only had our introductions and one real session, so it’s a bit early to say whether it will pay off, but it’s already giving me a good feeling, so I’m leaning towards yes.

  38. #WritersCoffeeClub Day 16: What's a writerly risk you've taken recently? Did it pay off?

I've had to take some time off from posting in my poetry blog because of health.

Has it paid off? Don't know yet. I still see the effects of it when I don't post daily in lower views and less interaction. And I still struggle with health issues.

What's a writerly risk you've taken recently? Did it pay off?

I guess this would be more of a marketing risk? I plan to serialize Book I of my 4 volume story from my website later this year. It will hopefully allow more readers to sample my writing. Maybe lead to more sales. Never tried anything like this before so will see how it goes.

I allowed myself to be persuaded into helping run the local poetry group. I am already wishing fervently that I hadn't.
