  7. I don’t know what to believe about an afterlife, or the spiritual world. One thing that has confused me about it for my whole life is my experience when I was very young.

Before I could talk very well, I didn’t have my own voice. Obviously, we don’t know what our voices will sound like before we can speak.

But I always have a running commentary in my head. And when I was young, before I could speak and had my own voice, there was an old man’s voice in my head.

I remember it clearly, that it was replaced with my own voice once I had one. I was very sad when it left me, and it felt like there was an old caring man who was leaving.

I don’t know what to think about it. Was I simply capable of thinking in adult sentences before I could physically speak them and invented or copied a voice, and so am I remembering the voice as speaking more fluently than it was? Could I have been reincarnated and this was my past life voice, elderly as presumably I died when old? Or could it have been God?

I remember it had to leave me. That was part of the sadness I felt. And I was never able to recreate it. Once my own voice was installed in my head thoughts, it never went back to the old man’s voice again. I can vaguely remember what it sounded like, but it is very distant.

  12. A quotation from Robert Ingersoll

Infinite punishment is infinite cruelty, endless injustice, immortal meanness. To worship an eternal gaoler hardens, debases, and pollutes even the vilest soul. While there is one sad and breaking heart in the universe, no good being can be perfectly happy.

Robert Green Ingersoll (1833-1899) American lawyer, freethinker, orator
Lecture (1881-05-01) “The Great Infidels,” Booth’s Theater, New York

  13. A quotation from Ingersoll

The God of Hell should be held in loathing, contempt and scorn. A God who threatens eternal pain should be hated, not loved — cursed, not worshiped. A heaven presided over by such a God must be below the lowest hell. I want no part in any heaven in which the saved, the ransomed and redeemed will drown with shouts of joy the cries and sobs of hell — in which happiness will forget misery, where the tears of the lost only increase laughter and double bliss.

  14. A quotation from Robert Green Ingersoll

Is it necessary that Heaven should borrow its light from the glare of Hell?

  16. A quotation from Robert Ingersoll

The doctrine of eternal pain is my trouble with this Christian religion. I reject it on account of its infinite heartlessness.

  17. A quotation from Robert Ingersoll

In this world we never will be perfectly civilized as long as a gallows casts its shadow upon the earth. As long as there is a penitentiary, within the walls of which a human being is immured, we are not a perfectly civilized people. We shall never be perfectly civilized until we do away with crime.
And yet, according to this Christian religion, God is to have an eternal penitentiary; he is to be an everlasting jailer, an everlasting turnkey, a warden of an infinite dungeon, and he is going to keep prisoners there forever, not for the purpose of reforming them — because they are never going to get any better, only worse — but for the purpose of purposeless punishment. And for what? For something they failed to believe in this world. Born in ignorance, supported by poverty, caught in the snares of temptation, deformed by toil, stupefied by want — and yet held responsible through the countless ages of eternity! No man can think of a greater horror; no man can dream of a greater absurdity.

Robert Green Ingersoll (1833-1899) American lawyer, freethinker, orator
Lecture (1884-01-20), “Orthodoxy,” Tabor Opera House, Denver, Colorado

  18. A quotation from Marcus Aurelius

Soon you will have forgotten the world, and soon the world will have forgotten you.

[Ἐγγὺς μὲν ἡ σὴ περὶ πάντων λήθη, ἐγγὺς δὲ ἡ πάντων περὶ σοῦ λήθη.]

Marcus Aurelius (AD 121-180) Roman emperor (161-180), Stoic philosopher
Meditations [To Himself; Τὰ εἰς ἑαυτόν], Book 7, ch. 21 (7.21) (AD 161-180) [tr. Staniforth (1964)]
