  1. So I finished Tegmark's "Our Mathematical Universe" which was definitely not as annoying as Loeb's book, but I think that's because I kinda expect mathematicians to be total fucking weirdos.

"Our Mathematical Universe" is one of those books that has a few chapters that don't age well. There's bits near the end when Tegmark waxes about how awesome the Singularity will be, and haha oof, that shit probably sounded way more cool and exciting a decade ago.

The rest of it is kinda take it or leave it, like this all feels like semantics and general labelling issues right? Like, what is a particle? What stuff is a particle made of? What if it's ✨ made of math? ✨ Sure, why not? It's about as good as any other guess we have.

The unfortunate thing (for me) is that I've been exposed to stuff like this all my life, this isn't really *new* information for me, I'm familiar with the Copenhagen interpretation of QM, I'm familiar with the different varieties and levels of parallel universes, etc. I want something more.

And that's very much a 'me' issue, because really the only place to go from here is to university to actually learn particle physics or whatever, and I ain't got time for that. Would that I could just learn everything, but I can't, I learned all the superficial stuff, so now documentaries bore me.

Do I recommend "Our Mathematical Universe"? Eh. I guess if you want a discussion into some of the peculiarities of QM and parallel universes, sure? But I'd also read a lot of other books and watch a lot of other documentaries just to round things out, there's a lot of voices in this space.

One thing that I feel "Our Mathematical Universe" covers well is the phenomenon of being "scooped" while doing research, like hey, it happens. You could get palpitations wondering if you're The Very First with an idea, then casually read a 50 year old paper and realize that no, you are not.

  2. You’ll like this if you enjoy stories that creep up on you. It’s short. But every page has weight. Every word matters.

  15. 📚 I recently finished reading The Warmth Of Other Suns - the story of the Great Migration, the movement of Black Americans out of the South from about 1915 to 1970 - by Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Isabel Wilkerson. Telling the story through the eyes of 3 people who experienced that journey made for a moving + enlightening read. 📚

  16. 📕 Hospital Sketches 📕

Louisa May Alcott served as a Union Army nurse for 6 weeks in Washington DC at the end of 1862. That time, cut short by a case of typhoid pneumonia, inspired her book Hospital Sketches- a short novel both humorous + devastatingly sad.

These are photos of what her world might have looked like during that time

  19. 📚 2666 📚

Finished this MONSTER of a book last night as the sun was coming down ... struggling to read as I was losing my light - The perfect way to reach a conclusion that leaves the reader somewhat in the dark. Not that I'm complaining. Quite an adventure!

By Chilean born novelist, poet Roberto Bolaño - released posthumously in 2004, a year after his death at age 50.

  20. 📖 Tevye the Dairyman & Motl the Cantor's Son 📚

As a big fan of Fiddler on the Roof, I decided I should read the original Tevye stories. First published in 1894, Tevye 'tells' Aleichem the tales of his family, focusing on six of his seven daughters, Tzeitel, Chava, Hodel, Shprintze, Taybele, and Bielke. I was surprised by how different these tales proved to be from musical.
But the highlight here is the delightful adventures of the 'orphan' Motl in Aleichem's unfinished novel Motl and the Cantor's Son. These tales take us on the journey from poverty in the Shtetl, across Europe to the promise land of America. Motls' take on life is endearing and funny. I am amazed that these stories have never made it to film!
