  1. but I realized that the anthropological and archaeological significance was much greater. It described in detail the tools weapons and other implements they used, along with the native names. Some of them were only known from archaeological contexts and how they were actually used had been only conjectural. "Reading" the account, it played for me as a movie I watched. It included the British ship landing, skirmishing with the locals then learning to communicate and trade.

  6. I dreamed I was reviewing documents from a British East India Company officer from the start of the 19th century. It detailed an expedition to an obscure location inhabited by descendants of Viking settlers still using traditional iron-age technology and lifestyle a thousand years later. The account was not completely unknown to scholars, but was mostly neglected other than noted for first recounting of geographic features,

  11. 50 States of Harmony

Last night I dreamed a man came by to see my paintings. You’ve probably seen it in the movies, someone comes by and the artist begins pulling her canvases from the rack to be ‘examined.’ In my dream I may have been wondering if it was my turn to be discovered, but it was me doing the discovering because among the stack were three practically identical canvases I had completely forgotten I’d done. Fact is, I’d never even seen them before! And yet they were among my work. Three paintings representing versions of our flag of stars and stripes, but in different colors and a totally different design. This new version had a massive ‘V’ coming down from above. V for Victory comes to mind. V, I like to think, for being victorious in uniting our different ‘states’—in this case—states of consciousness. Or maybe just accepting our different states of awareness of being and existing. That would be just as good, even if it only happens in a dream. Because it has to start somewhere.

Dreams take place in that higher dimension where we’re freed from the shackles of Time and Space and can go roaming around the universe at will, free to imagine these fifty states could be fifty states of harmony. Fifty states of joy and wonder. Fifty states of living in acceptance of one another. I can’t duplicate the image exactly because it wasn’t in this reality—yet. It was still in the ethers, the land of possibilities. And though it was clear to me at the time, once I woke up back here, it had gone all fuzzy.

But why three? It might be because they each represented a different stage of development. There was the War of Independence, then the Civil War, and now this new thing we’re grappling with and don’t have a name for yet, though we all know it’s a mess.

But there was a V like the tip of an arrow moving through space, bringing something higher down into something lower. And the shape of the flag being more square than rectangular (because it didn’t need to fly on some flagpole?) – well, you could practically see the M there… M for mankind, as in hu-man-ity, which is all of us.

And as for the stars and stripes, the ‘stars’ were round as circles, (as real stars are) floating like white-hot suns, representing not only in which state of the union we reside, but in which state of starlight we find ourselves in, now that we’re here. And the stripes were just lines. Thick ones, granted, maybe because they were coming together, joining up to create a new state of alignment. I can’t remember their particular placements, probably because it’s all in a state of flux at the moment. Or maybe because the only stripes necessary in this case were the ones representing the V. Victory of the Good, the True and the Beautiful, held up by the two poles at each end—forming an M for Hu-Man-ity.

    * Full disclosure: The man who came by to see my work didn’t just appear out of nowhere. He was sent over by a friend I haven’t been in touch with since I told her about the time I found heaven and she accused me of being selfish. I was sorry about that, and now in the dream she was calling me up, telling me she was sorry too, and that a man would be coming by.

    Soulmates

    My heart whispers
    the whispers of your heart
    A steady rhythm
a love song from the start.

    A slow beat,
    a gasp, conveys
    ur love to me
    in countless ways

    A faster lub-dub,
    when you’re near,
    echoes a thrill,
    so soft, so clear…

    the whispers, the pulses,
    the heart strings
    tied together
    as we exhange rings

    ~~

    Beats per minute

    the silence between two
    heartbeats—
    the pause
    a void
    carved by a black hole

    will the heart beat again?
    it did—
    A tremble…then a thud
    the cosmos stirred

    the heartbeat between two
    silences,
    the pulse
    a lub-dub of stars
    echoing through emptiness

    a gasp of fresh air
    the realisation of life—
    Will the silence
    return again?

    ~~

    Bag of dreams

I carry a bag of dreams
    that seems light
    to a passerby—
    the way stars seem
    to an onlooker:
    weightless,
    minuscule.
    But in truth
    they are massive—
    scorching,
    beyond reach.
    That is what
    my bag of dreams
    is like—
    light
    as a star.

    ~~

    Petrichor

    Poetry to me is like
    rain is to Earth

I am a dry barren land
    craving poetic rain
when suddenly cloudy thoughts begin to float all around.

    I wait calmly
    as my sky fills with
    grey hues of reflection.

    A slow breeze
    tickles my insides
    becoming a raging thunderstorm.

    Soon it starts drizzling
    a word or two,
    gradually swelling into
a heavy shower of sentences, stanzas,
    rhymed and unrhymed
    gradually settling as
    sonnets & free verse.

    and then there the calm
    after the rain
when all I am left with is
    petrichor of poetry.

    ~~

    ‘S’ for Solitude

    It’s the solitude
    where I belong
    And no, it is
    not loneliness,
    just the solitude
    for I am a Poet

I have to breathe the silence
    dissolved in the air
    that envelops me,
    becoming a shield
    between the world and me

    This solitude
    secretly suffuses
all its warmth into my soul
and I wait in its entirety

    as silence gently
    metamorphoses
    into syllables
    into sentences
    into poetry

    It’s the solitude
    where I belong,
    not the separation,
    isolation
    just solitude
    for I am a Poet
    and
    for a poet
    solitude is bliss…

    where I belong
    And no, it is
    not loneliness,
    just the solitude
    for I am a Poet

I have to breathe the silence
    dissolved in the air
    that envelops me,
    becoming a shield
    between the world and me

    This solitude
    secretly suffuses
all its warmth into my soul
and I wait in its entirety

    as silence gently
    metamorphoses
    into syllables
    into sentences
    into poetry

    It’s the solitude
    where I belong,
    not the separation,
    isolation
    just solitude
    for I am a Poet
    and
    for a poet
    solitude is bliss…

    Soulmates

    My heart whispers
    the whispers of your heart
    A steady rhythm
a love song from the start.

    A slow beat,
    a gasp, conveys
    ur love to me
    in countless ways

    A faster lub-dub,
    when you’re near,
    echoes a thrill,
    so soft, so clear…

    the whispers, the pulses,
    the heart strings
    tied together
    as we exhange rings

    ~~

    Beats per minute

    the silence between two
    heartbeats—
    the pause
    a void
    carved by a black hole

    will the heart beat again?
    it did—
    A tremble…then a thud
    the cosmos stirred

    the heartbeat between two
    silences,
    the pulse
    a lub-dub of stars
    echoing through emptiness

    a gasp of fresh air
    the realisation of life—
    Will the silence
    return again?

    ~~

    Bag of dreams

I carry a bag of dreams
    that seems light
    to a passerby—
    the way stars seem
    to an onlooker:
    weightless,
    minuscule.
    But in truth
    they are massive—
    scorching,
    beyond reach.
    That is what
    my bag of dreams
    is like—
    light
    as a star.

    ~~

    Petrichor

    Poetry to me is like
    rain is to Earth

I am a dry barren land
    craving poetic rain
when suddenly cloudy thoughts begin to float all around.

    I wait calmly
    as my sky fills with
    grey hues of reflection.

    A slow breeze
    tickles my insides
    becoming a raging thunderstorm.

    Soon it starts drizzling
    a word or two,
    gradually swelling into
a heavy shower of sentences, stanzas,
    rhymed and unrhymed
    gradually settling as
    sonnets & free verse.

    and then there the calm
    after the rain
when all I am left with is
    petrichor of poetry.

  27. Not really a #movie #review, but a comment about it and the company behind it.

Re: "Elio" (2025), a "Pixar" movie in the sense that it uses #Pixar CGI technology to tell a Disney story.

The #Disnefication of Pixar is perfectly complete now; this movie is the first time that I'm absolutely 100% sure of that fact. Reminder: Pixar came to prominence partly because of its #innovative use of 3D rendering #CGI, but also because it had good stories, good scripts, told well by good directors - actual #filmmaking if not high #art.

#Disney, on the other hand, stands for taking generic or traditional stories, sucking all the life and drama and context and nuance out of them to leave an uninteresting, inoffensive, dry husk, putting a bit of spit-shine on them, #marketing and #merchandising the hell out of it, and then siccing platoons of #lawyers on anyone who even breathes on it without permission. Oh, and MONEY MONEY #MONEY.

Wow, does this one show that, in spades. (Spoiler alert) At the end is a sequence that, no word of a lie, boils down to "Give up your #dreams, try to fit in and not stand out, make sure to do what is expected of you by others rather than what you would like to do yourself, and remember that other peoples' happiness about you doing what you're expected to is more important than your own #happiness".

If that ain't the perfect #message from a giant #corporate behemoth trying to manufacture nice little #consumer #worker #drones, I don't know what is.
