  6. For *absolutely everything* I have in mind I'd be shocked if it came to any more than $150,000-200,000 to make a house into a real home for me and my future kid, which should actually be doable when the time comes...I'm just disturbed by how much life costs now.

  7. I'm trying to plan what I'll need in the future, and so last night I ran an experiment where I pick out pieces I actually like to furnish a standard-sized home. End result? A Pottery Barn cart that weighs in at $58,000...and counting. I'll need more money than I thought... 👀

  13. Good morning. 🦆🪿🦢

    22 May 2026

I had a recurring dream last night. Well, not exactly recurring, but the premise is always the same: I’m still in the Army, and I’ve already turned in my field gear in preparation for a PCS. “Permanent” change of station is a funny term, since nothing in the Army is ever permanent, but we all know it means you’re headed to another unit, usually halfway around the world.

In the dream, my gear is turned in, but for some reason I’m stuck — unable to leave, caught in a strange limbo. The details shift, the people around me change, but I’m always waiting for transportation that never quite arrives. Movement is paused for reasons no one can explain. So I carry on with only the odd bits of gear I bought myself over the years. Strange, isn’t it?

There’s a bit of trivia I’ve picked up from having served in both the Marine Corps and the Army. In the Marines, we called our field gear 782 gear, named after the form it was issued on: NAVMC Form 782. In the Army, the same basic gear is called TA‑50, after the authorizing publication CTA 50‑500 (CTA meaning Common Table of Allowances).

Two services, two cultures, and two sets of terminology for the same things. Think duffel bag vs. sea bag, hat vs. cover, latrine vs. head — the list goes on.

On a different note, teachers pour their own money into classrooms because budgets rarely cover what students truly need. They buy supplies, books, and basics so learning doesn’t suffer — a quiet burden they shoulder simply because they care. I mentioned helping my granddaughter’s kindergarten class in my last morning post. I’ll share her classroom registry again during one more two‑day cycle in case anyone wants to help equip her room.

  18. Wow, that was weird. I just had a long dream, and in it, I had an autistic meltdown. In the dream, I was forced to people a lot in a gathering-type environment, people IRL that I had no- contacted for good reason were forcing me to account for my upcoming schedule, and my phone which helps me remember things and stay functional kept crashing itself when I needed it most.

I have no idea what triggered this dream, but oh am I glad to have my safe space at home with my kitty! It's interesting how this intensity is lying in wait just outside the door.

  20. RE: mastodon.uno/@G3rt/11653768390

@caesarcattus I find it difficult to agree with this:

"Human nature is to be a soulless son of a bitch, held back only by fear of punishment, whether from human law itself or some imagined deity."

    From the same paragraph:

"I myself can be a compassionate genius and in the next moment break your head for being rude and treating me badly."

    – that's more like me, without being a genius.

I have long believed that humankind's concept of deities arose, partly, from a true sense of awe (millennia before "awesome" became a throwaway word). Few humans lived above cloud level, and everything higher than those people's heads was entirely, wonderfully, mysterious.

There's a human nature to not only gain knowledge but also share knowledge―and enjoy agreement, or consensus, about what's shared.

We live in an era that is both blessed and tainted by what our predecessors believed that they knew in the absence of modern science.

Thanks to @G3rt @lproven @volts.wtf @gisiger @j2bryson.bsky.social and others who have shared the article about consciousness. I don't know what to think, and it's OK to not know. Quoting Carlo Rovelli:

"Consciousness is not separate from the physical world — our “soul” is of the same nature as our body and any other phenomenon of the world."

    Amongst the questions that remain:

― how can two human beings, at a distance, literally share the same dream?

Is this fantastic fact an aspect of the soul? Is it an ancient part of human nature that predates spoken and written communication? I enjoy the fact that there is no reasonable scientific answer.

    The mystery is truly awesome.

  21. @John @SockDiva I was dreaming about Bendigo / Ballarat last night too. They were combined into a single town. 🤷‍♀️
I had moved there and found out about a wonderful Art University and I wanted to enrol. I had hoped it was in walking distance. But a man told me it was "24 miles away!" I sighed and said I'd catch the bus then. And he just laughed and laughed.

*No idea what any of it meant 😁

  22. Wow weird dream last night.

My favourite gaming cafe closes in 2 weeks - just to set the scene.

Whilst all the building works are continuing on the house the kitchen isn't really that usable - so I said to @thing "let's pop to Extra Life" for dinner.

We drove up there and all the junction had changed - and the cafe had closed and reopened as a pretentious wine bar taking in the unit next door so they had the views of the roundabout (there isn't a unit next door - this is the funny bit!)

We were sat at a table and Thing stood up to go to the bar. When she came back and went to sit down someone took the bench seat she was sat on.

I was horrified that Mike & Rachel (the owners of Extra Life) did nothing - and when I asked them why they said "he's our landlord and we don't want kicking out". To add insult to injury we got a parking ticket despite paying and still being in time - which is odd as there's no parking there.

It was a really really weird and lucid dream.

  23. Is there anyone else out there who remembers their dreams •every• morning? I've been doing that all my life, without exception. I even remember dreaming in my crib as a baby.

Someone recently said that that was weird, that there was probably something wrong with me. I'm not buying it.

But I'm wondering if there's anyone else like me in that regard.
