She Needed a Villain. I Refused the Role.
Grab your iced coffee. And if you know me, you already know exactly what is sitting next to me right now: a large iced Tesora from Philz, extra sweet with heavy cream, the ice just starting to melt a little, and probably enough sugar to make a cardiologist send me a strongly worded email.
Settle in. Pull a blanket over your legs if you need to. Put your phone on Do Not Disturb. Today we are going all the way in. We are taking a deep, unflinching dive into a topic that I know so many of you carry heavily in your own chests: navigating toxic relationships, protecting your hard-won peace, and watching a one-sided rivalry completely implode from the relative safety of the sidelines.
For the sake of this story, we are going to keep things carefully anonymous. No real names (except mine, of course, and we’ll call the main character of this long, exhausting saga “Vanessa”), no careers, no cities, and no highly specific identifying details that could turn this into something it was never meant to be.
But the dynamic? The dynamic is something I guarantee you have seen before.
Maybe you’ve lived it. Maybe you’re still living it. Maybe you’re the one standing on the other side of the glass, watching someone desperately try to shatter a reflection they simply cannot stand to look at. This is the story of what happens when your peaceful, thriving life becomes a mirror that reflects someone else’s misery—and how they will burn their own house down, brick by brick, just trying to break that mirror.
To understand the present, we have to rewind. Not just a little bit. We have to go all the way back to the beginning of a friendship that existed long before I ever walked into the picture.
My husband (let’s call him C) and his best friend (let’s call him D) have been thick as thieves since they were literally in diapers. They have the kind of lifelong brotherhood that doesn’t just survive childhood mischief and teenage stupidity—it survives adulthood, distance, different life paths, and every ordinary and extraordinary hurdle that comes with growing up. They have inside jokes that are older than some of the people reading this. They are the kind of friends who can sit in silence for an hour and still feel completely at home with each other.
Vanessa is D’s wife.
For a long time, before I came into the picture, Vanessa was essentially the “only girl” in the boys’ club. If you looked at old group pictures from years ago—vacation photos, restaurant selfies, blurry candid shots—you’d see the same three faces over and over: C, D, and Vanessa. Traveling together. Hitting up the same restaurants. Taking those matching group photos that always somehow made it onto social media with captions about “the crew” or “my people.” Living that tight, closed-circle “three amigos” lifestyle.
Vanessa had a monopoly on the dynamic. She was comfortable. She was in control. She was the default female presence, the one whose opinions shaped the group’s plans, the one whose comfort level dictated what was acceptable. There was a clear order to things, and she sat comfortably near the top of it.
And then… I walked in.
Cue dramatic music. Except there really wasn’t anything dramatic about it. I wasn’t trying to replace anybody. I wasn’t trying to infiltrate some sacred friendship circle. I wasn’t standing outside their house wearing camouflage and holding binoculars. I simply fell in love with my husband. He fell in love with me. We built a life together. That was it.
We built a relationship that was calm, respectful, affectionate, and mutually supportive. From the very beginning, there was a natural ease between us—real ease, the kind that doesn’t require constant performance or emotional labor just to keep the temperature stable.
But from literally day one, Vanessa’s energy toward me was completely off.
It wasn’t the normal, slightly awkward “getting to know the new person” energy. It was a deep, bitter, territorial resentment that arrived fully formed, as if she had already decided who I was and what my presence meant before we’d exchanged more than a handful of sentences. Over the years, that resentment didn’t soften. It calcified. It morphed into a full-blown, one-sided obsession.
To be absolutely clear: my husband and his best friend still hang out. Their lifelong brotherhood is fully intact. But the “three amigos” era? That is entirely dead. My husband simply refuses to hang out with her. When he is forced to be in her presence at a gathering, he gives her the absolute bare minimum of polite, detached courtesy. He acts like a digital pacifier—tossing an occasional “like” on her social media just to keep her from throwing a paranoid tantrum at D—but he is completely inaccessible to her drama. She successfully isolated herself from his genuine friendship, all while blaming everyone else especially me.
The internet has approximately seventeen million words for difficult people: Narcissist. Gaslighter. Manipulator. Control freak. Toxic. But those words get thrown around so freely nowadays that somebody can forget to text you back and suddenly TikTok has diagnosed them with six personality disorders.
None of those words quite capture Vanessa’s specific brand of chaos. So, I had to invent a new word for the dictionary. Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce:
Victator (noun): A person who operates as a ruthless, controlling dictator in their relationships, but maintains their power entirely by playing the helpless victim.
Example: “She threw a massive tantrum and forced her kids to block people on social media, proving she is a classic Victator.”
Vanessa is the ultimate Victator. She wants to make every decision, but she also wants everyone to frantically acknowledge how overwhelmed she is. She wants to run everything, but somehow everything is also happening to her. She wants total power without a shred of accountability. She wants martyrdom with executive privileges. It is actually impressive to witness.
One of the most exhausting parts of dealing with a Victator is what I call Competitive Over-Functioning. This is when a person insists on doing everything themselves and then becomes furious that they are doing everything themselves. She will complain—loudly, repeatedly, to anyone who will listen—that she does absolutely everything: the cleaning, the parenting, the organizing, the invisible work that no one appreciates.
And yet, she will explicitly forbid anyone else from helping. She will reject offers of support with a performance of long-suffering independence, only to later use that same “hard work” as a scorecard.
A marriage shouldn’t feel like an Excel spreadsheet where somebody is calculating emotional billable hours. But for a Victator, guilt is her currency. Anxiety is her weapon. She deploys both with practiced precision. Living near a Victator is like living next to a weather system that never moves on. Everyone starts monitoring the horizon for the next storm, even on perfectly clear days.
If you look at Vanessa’s social media, you will see a carefully curated PR campaign. Soft lighting. Pictures of her with her kids captioned “my mini me!” Captions overflowing with gratitude, about family, about how deeply blessed she is. The flawless facade of a happy, thriving, tightly knit unit.
But behind closed doors? The reality is so dark it’s actually heartbreaking. Let’s talk about how the people in her life actually experience her.
The Spouse: Her husband is literally living in a hostage situation. He walks on eggshells so aggressively, so constantly, that his physical health is failing. He is dealing with stress-induced chest pains because of her daily emotional abuse. She trivializes his feelings. She minimizes his contributions. She makes him feel, day after day, like he is failing at the basic job of being a husband and a father. He is currently running on fumes, quietly plotting a total escape plan—not because he wants drama or revenge, but because he is desperately trying to survive his own life.
The Kids: Kids are smarter than we give them credit for. You can only use them as pawns for so long before they realize they are pieces on a chessboard. Vanessa is so desperate for control that she actively audits her teenagers’ phones. She forces them to block and unfollow me—not because I’ve ever said a single unkind word to them, but because my existence soothes nothing in her, and therefore must be digitally erased. She thinks she’s teaching them loyalty. What she’s actually teaching them is that their mother’s love is conditional, heavily micromanaged, and entirely dependent on their willingness to participate in her insecurities.
The In-Laws & Friends: Everyone sees it. The in-laws know. The old friends know. They see a woman who refuses to act like a partner—who makes unilateral decisions (like hosting a child’s birthday party without even consulting the father) and then frames any pushback as a vicious attack. They see the isolation tactics: the quiet, consistent work of cutting off or icing out relationships with anyone who might shine a light on the toxicity.
So, why does she hate me so much? It’s simple, and it’s not actually about me at all.
C and I are a mirror. She looks at our relationship and sees a husband who deeply respects his wife. She sees a household filled with peace, ordinary laughter, and zero manufactured drama. She sees the absolute opposite of the emotional prison she has meticulously built and continues to maintain.
Imagine walking around in darkness for so long that your eyes adjust. Then somebody opens the curtains. The sunlight isn’t attacking you, but it still hurts your eyes. That is what comparison does. And instead of asking, “What can I improve in my own life?” some people decide: Turn off their light.
Absolutely not. I paid the electric bill. The light stays on.
Over the years, I have maintained the absolute highest of high roads. C and I buy her kids beautiful, expensive birthday gifts. We send generous wedding gifts to her extended family members. We drop polite, cheerful messages in the group chats. We show up to the required events with clean energy and absolutely no agenda.
And it drives her insane.
A Victator needs a villain to function. If I am kind, generous, and unbothered, she has no excuse to play the victim. So she creates a fake reality. She will literally text me privately saying, “We have no beef,” while simultaneously running around her house forcing her daughters to erase me from their social media.
She is so unhinged in her need to control the emotional narrative that her husband recently had to lie to her and pretend he bought the birthday gift C and I sent their daughter, just so she wouldn’t throw a jealous tantrum over seeing our names on the packing slip.
Sit with that for a second. A grown man has to hide an act of simple, generous kindness from his own wife because joy—someone else’s ordinary, non-competitive joy—is a trigger for her rage.
Let me be completely honest with you. Protecting your peace is a beautiful concept, but in practice, it takes a massive amount of self-control. There are days when the high road feels more like a tightrope. There have been moments—especially when the passive-aggression is thick in the air at a family gathering, and I am watching her spin her little webs—where the human part of me just wants to drop the hammer.
Everyone has a “break in case of emergency” script in their head. I have one for Vanessa. It is clinical, ice-cold, and entirely factual. If I ever reached the point of no return, if I ever decided that the high road was permanently closed and I wanted to dismantle her fake reality right to her face, this is exactly what I would say to her:
“Vanessa, the only reason I have stayed quiet this long is because I genuinely pity you. You spend your entire life running around trying to convince everyone that you are in control, but every single person in this room knows the truth.
We all see the reality of your marriage. We all know your husband walks on eggshells just to survive being in the same house as you. You are so deeply insecure and unstable that you have to literally force your own children to block people on their phones just to pretend you have some shred of authority as a mother.
You hate me because my husband actually respects me, and my life is filled with the peace and love that you are entirely incapable of creating in your own home. So keep posting your fake pictures, keep forcing your kids to hate the people who actually care about them, and keep living in your miserable little prison. But you will never, ever project your failures onto me again. I am entirely done with you. Do not speak to me again.”
Saying those words out loud would be incredibly satisfying for about five minutes. It would leave her completely speechless. It would completely shatter what is left of her fragile ego. It would expose her biggest secret: the fact that everyone already knows her husband is miserable. It would strip away her “Mother of the Year” facade and expose the Instagram blocking for what it is—pathetic, terrified insecurity.
But here is the reality about the nuclear option: once you press the button, you have to deal with the fallout. And frankly? My peace is worth far more than her destruction. She is already destroying herself; she doesn’t need my help. Keeping that speech safely tucked in my back pocket is power enough.
You cannot live your life as a human wrecking ball and expect your house to stay standing. The long-term effects of Vanessa’s behavior are already visible, and they are catastrophic.
If your goal is to separate somebody from everyone you dislike and you eventually succeed, you didn’t necessarily win. You may have simply created a lonely household. If every friend becomes suspicious, every relative becomes a problem, and every disagreement becomes a betrayal, eventually your circle gets very small.
Eventually, the house of cards is going to fall. You cannot gaslight a man into chest pains, trap him in a cycle of emotional and practical constraint, isolate his children from healthy outside relationships, and expect him to stay forever. The breaking point is coming. It is entirely of her own making. The mirror didn’t create the misery. The mirror only showed it.
Years ago, Vanessa’s behavior would irritate me. I would analyze everything. Why did she say that? Why did she unfollow me? Why is she acting differently in person?
Eventually, I realized I was donating entirely too much mental real estate to somebody who wasn’t paying rent. So I evicted the situation. Not physically. Mentally. Emotionally. Spiritually. Goodbye. Security deposit forfeited.
Because peace isn’t just about removing chaotic people from your physical environment. Sometimes peace means removing them from the conversation happening inside your own head. You cannot clarify your way out of somebody else’s chosen narrative. Once I understood that, I stopped preparing closing arguments for imaginary court cases. Believe whatever makes your day easier. I’m going home.
I am currently stepping into the most beautiful chapter of my life. C and I are growing our family, and my priorities have completely shifted. When you are genuinely happy—when your days are full of people who treat you with care—the chaotic tantrums of a bitter, insecure person start to look like a bad high school play. You stop being angry. You start feeling a clinical, almost detached pity.
There will inevitably be family gatherings in the future. Younger Tina might have spent three days mentally preparing for the awkward energy. Current Tina? Baby, I’m deciding what I’m wearing. That’s it. I will show up. I will look gorgeous because I feel good in my own skin. I will be polite because politeness costs me nothing. I will eat somebody’s food, find the dessert table, and go home surrounded by an energetic forcefield of pure peace that her misery cannot penetrate.
If you are dealing with a Vanessa in your life—a Victator who wants to drag you into their manufactured storm—my biggest advice is this: Do not pick up the rope.
Imagine somebody standing across from you holding a rope. They want conflict. They want competition. They want you pulling from the opposite side. But tug-of-war requires two people. If you don’t pick up the rope? They’re just standing there holding a piece of string, looking ridiculous.
You want to secretly dislike me? Enjoy. You want to analyze my marriage? Bring snacks. You want to create stories about me? Please make me interesting. Just spell Tina correctly. Because I am not participating.
People love dramatic revenge stories. The exposed messages, the huge argument, the grand finale. But adulthood taught me that some of the best revenge is painfully boring. It is a completely unbothered, deeply happy life. One that continues, quietly and steadily, whether they are watching or not.
Let them run their imaginary races. Some races are better watched from the sidelines. Especially when you never even entered.
Until next time, keep your boundaries strong, your home peaceful, and your coffee irresponsibly sweet!

One covert narcissist and two enablers. I held my own in that place longer than most could or would. Didn't break down. Found a job and went to it regardless of what was happening at home.
False accusations. Random people walking into my room. No real support. I never broke down. And at the end I was setting boundaries with authority — all three housemates.
I'm battle tested. But man — I'm tired now. I'm ready for peace.

In this one, I used anti-indoctrination techniques as explained by cult-survivor, -researcher and -therapist Dr. Steven Hassan in a conversation with a part of myself.
It's also an example of how the fruits of cult research can help with things that aren't Kool-Aid level, "clearly a cult". In this case, I focus mainly on interpersonal emotional abuse in the context of veganism.

The self-doubt is gone. My mind is quiet. There are patterns and I know these patterns — and that is absolutely kryptonite for hidden controlling types.
Someone walked into my room at 6:30am and stood there trying to justify himself instead of rushing for the exit. I already knew before that moment. My read on people is almost instant now. That's because I trust myself more.

Male Toxicity: The Unspoken Epidemic of Our Times
Male toxicity refers to patterns in which masculinity is constructed around dominance, emotional suppression, aggression, entitlement, and power over others. These patterns are not just private. They are social. They affect relationships, families, workplaces, and institutions. For many women, they signal that marriage, long-term commitment, or shared life may not feel safe or equal. For society as a whole, they erode trust, safety, and fairness.
The slow rot beneath the surface
Toxic masculinity is not just about men behaving badly. It’s a social design. It’s the way masculinity has been built around dominance, emotional suppression, aggression, entitlement, and control. These traits aren’t private quirks, they are public forces shaping families, workplaces, and institutions. For many women, they make partnership feel unsafe or unequal. For society, they corrode trust, fairness, and peace.
We like to talk about progress, women breaking barriers, gender equality gaining ground, workplaces growing more inclusive. But beneath this surface of modernity runs a darker current. Male toxicity isn’t a few bad men or isolated events; it’s a cultural flaw we’ve normalized.
From the boardroom to the bedroom, women are still told to “adjust.”
If a husband is angry, it’s her tone.
If a male boss is rude, it’s her lack of resilience.
If a boy is violent, it’s the mother’s fault for being too soft.
Generation after generation, women learn that safety and dignity are negotiable — because the world forgives male aggression and rewards female endurance.
The unbearable normal
We have learned to live with male toxicity. That may sound harsh, but look closely. Every time a woman is told to “adjust,” we ignore her discomfort. Every time abuse is excused as “temper,” we dismiss the harm. Every time a child hears “boys will be boys,” we reinforce harmful expectations. These actions renew an ancient social contract. This contract trades women’s safety and dignity for the comfort of male entitlement.
This contract has governed homes, workplaces, and nations for centuries. What’s different today is that women are walking away, from marriages, from unsafe workplaces, and from the illusion that patience will reform patriarchy.
What we are witnessing is not rebellion. It’s survival.
A society built to forgive men
In India, normalization begins early. Boys are taught control, not compassion. Girls are taught silence, not self-respect. A son’s anger is excused; a daughter’s pain is dismissed. One grows up entitled to power; the other learns to live with fear.
This conditioning seeps into every institution. Marital rape is still not a crime. Domestic violence is underreported and often withdrawn under pressure. NCRB data in 2024 revealed that every third woman in India faces domestic abuse at some point — and that’s only what’s recorded. “Adjust and endure” remains society’s silent policy.
Globally, the pattern repeats. Men dominate headlines not for what they build, but for what they destroy.
In the U.S., most mass shooters are men.
In Iran and Afghanistan, male authority strips women of freedom.
In wars across Ukraine, Gaza, and Sudan, men plan and prolong destruction, while women and children pay the price.
Whether it’s a man taking hostages, an abusive husband setting a woman on fire, or a CEO silencing a female employee, the pattern is chillingly consistent: violence, power, control.
Society doesn’t just tolerate male toxicity. It rationalizes it.
And men suffer too, trapped in narrow roles of provider, protector, or punisher. Deprived of empathy and emotional literacy, they become victims of the very system they benefit from.
But women still pay more, in unpaid care, emotional labor, and the daily effort to survive male rage. Every mother raising a son today carries a quiet fear: What kind of man will he become if the world keeps teaching him that softness is weakness?
The workplaces of silence
India’s workplaces mirror its homes. Hierarchies are invisible but powerful. Leadership remains male-heavy; aggression is mistaken for competence.
This “masculinity contest culture,” as researchers call it, rewards dominance, long hours, and posturing.
Women who resist are labeled “difficult.” Men who refuse it are labeled “weak.”
This silent toxicity costs more than morale. It drains innovation, deepens attrition, and erodes collaboration. Yet most organizations still treat it as an HR topic, not a governance issue. Diversity workshops cannot fix what leadership refuses to name.
A generational reckoning
We stand at a crossroads.
Our children will inherit either our silence or our courage.
If we keep excusing toxicity as tradition, they will grow up in broken families, unsafe workplaces, and emotionally barren relationships.
The collapse won’t be sudden. It will creep in, as loneliness disguised as freedom, fear disguised as caution, and mistrust disguised as independence.
Women will stop believing in love.
Men will stop understanding intimacy.
Society will fracture, not from ideology, but from the absence of empathy.
If we do not break this cycle, the future will look like this:
Male toxicity is not just a gender problem. It’s a civilizational one. It corrodes empathy, destabilizes homes, and threatens the very fabric of human connection.
We must pause. Rethink. Rebuild.
Because a culture that teaches women to adapt and men to dominate is not sustainable. It is violent, and it is collapsing.
Reform, education, and accountability are tools. But introspection is the beginning.
Each man must examine the privileges he mistakes for rights.
Each institution must confront the behaviors it quietly rewards.
Each family must stop raising sons who think respect is optional.
Male toxicity is not a women’s burden to fix. It is society’s disease, and curing it will demand collective courage.
If we fail, our children will inherit a world where empathy is extinct, equality is fiction, and humanity itself feels unsafe.
That is the true cost of silence.

Review: Chi no Wadachi
Chi no Wadachi (Blood on the Tracks, A Trail of Blood, 血の轍), 2017-2023, Oshimi, Shuuzou, Big Comic Superior Warning for realistic family trauma and abuse. STORY: 8 Meet Seiichi Osabe, a boy on the path to teenage-hood: new experiences, more freedom, new feelings, independence! Except that.. Seiichi has a mother, Seiko, who is taking a place that is too large in his life. Way too large. The story deals with psychological horror in a family context, and, the delivery is very powerful. Brianna “Chickenfry” LaPaglia Claims Ex Zach Bryan Offered Her $12.9 Million
Goal Post Shifting
I understand this as a manipulative technique that combines totalist reframing with thought terminating cliches. You or your group or ideology want to exert undue influence over someone. But in order to do so efficiently, they have to accept that you deserve to do that and that they need or want to be controlled.
This central lie can be justified by any kind of system, anything can be co-opted. Neat! No one is safe! As long as you keep the victim from seeing the contradicions! They have to freely chose to give up free choice... tricky.
But never fear. If they ever question you (the group, leadership, dogma), turn it around on THEM immediately! Shift the goalposts from proving that you're legit, to making them prove that they're not complicit.
If they still try to weasel out, proclaim that they're ignoring important details in their misguided attemt to put together the bigger picture. Point them to a detail that is supposedly relevant (bonus point if it isn't) and that is a thought terminating cliche. End of discussion.
Or you complain that they pick apart a detail of something that their limited little mind can't grasp so, you admonish them: How dare you lose sight of the bigger picture! Tell them a thought terminating cliche that vaguely sounds deep.
The less your attack fits what they actually say and do, the better! It keeps them busy.
You can do this all day.

I found that this is one of the (progressive) tactics used to manipulate and silence dissent... "DARVO"
D ← Deny
A ← Attack
R, V & O ← Reverse victim and the offender
Person A: "You lied to me!"
Person B:
"I didn’t lie! (Deny)
You’re so paranoid. (Attack)
You’re the one always twisting my words—now I can’t even trust *you*! (Reverse Victim & Offender)

If you cannot go no contact your next best bet is #greyRocking or #yellowRocking. You become non-reactive to their actions. You stay calm, controlled, rational, and emotionally disengaged. It's hard but possible.
When you do that you take away the abuser's power over you. They no longer can control you through your emotions. Just be prepared: they'll most likely double down on the abuse before accepting the fact that you can no longer be controlled by them. And they'll most likely never stop probing you as long as you are still in contact with them.
If you can go no contact. Do it for yourself. You deserve better.

Breaking the #traumaBond that binds you to your abuser is hard work. You literally go through the stages of grief, as part of breaking it requires you to let go of the shared delusion that your abuser is a "good person".
This means that you lose the person you thought they were. All while potentially still interacting with them. All while potentially still being subjected to their manipulations.
This is why people recommend going no contact. Healing from abuse requires you to re-center yourself in your reality, in your perception. And that results in your abuser having less control. Spoiler: they don't want that.

You think you’re living in a dishevelled, but mostly functional, house. Then one day a floorboard creaks, and you plummet into… something else.
A secret basement.
I’ve known about Secret Sexual Basement theory for a while, but only recently found courage to start working through it properly.
It's the gaslighting, deflection, and gut-deep sense that “something’s off"

Continual #EmotionalAbuse by this regime should be a federal crime. Democrats must hold televised hearing after hearing and hearing in the coming days weeks and months inviting constituents to detail the personal ill affects of trump’s policies.

I used to attend a university for a diploma in computer engineering. After a few semesters, I decided to stop studying there. I needed to withdraw. However, what they call "student peers"—I am not sure what the term is in English—were being reductionist and maximalist regarding the official documents, stating that I had already agreed to and chosen the university and the study program in the online application form. This is not fair. I believe it is important to treat each person as an individual, as a whole person, rather than merely considering what I have done to prevent me from leaving. I wasn't there to fulfill their collectivist culture, believing I should prioritize the university's name and dignity at the cost of my own. At the moment, I want to take a break from writing this, as my mind is troubled by thoughts of my past, including the emotional abuse I experienced from the university staff. Unfair, right?

Guess who is exploiting and taking advantage of my vulnerability and trust? My uncle. He can use any of my mistakes that he finds to justify bullying and mocking me. I don't even have money to pay for his liquid petroleum gas for cooking. I am really sad, and no one cares. I am still a student with so many debts that I can't pay. It's around RM50,000. What does he expect? Taking advantage of me? Using my inability to pay his bills and for LPG, and when I'm at my worst, it's time for him to kick me out of his house. I am actually homeless. But that terribly destroyed house doesn't count. My father wanted me to stay at my uncle's house for stable electricity. #FamilyIssues #Struggle #Support #Homeless #StudentLife #Debt #EmotionalAbuse #Bullying #Vulnerability #Trust #Hope #Vent #MentalHealth #IAmTheProduct #MutualAid #NoOneCares
We Can Hurt the Ones We Love When Recovering From Abuse
When recovering from abuse - particularly abuse from someone using narcissistic techniques - it's common for the recovering person to end up hurting the people who are in the healthiest relationships with them.
