  1. Time for a #FridayFieldPhoto because it's #FieldWorkFriday

    (Or perhaps a #FieldPhotoFriday entry)

More #DogSled on #SeaIce in Northern #Greenland from the spring this year..

Today I'm posting a tiny video as I've been working with some students on the data we collected this year.

How about a smashed pot found documented in situ in a Middle Bronze Age deposit?

(Too many pictures of dirt to choose from. An occupational hazard in #Archaeology)

  3. One of those moments #InTheField when everyone is working at full tilt, making sure the observations are completed at a site before moving on to the next one.

Ad here is a new quick post: he countdown has begun and I'm in a #Fieldwork frame of mind.

(HT @tutam for the #FieldPhotoFriday reminder!)

  4. #FieldPhotoFriday

A typical North Mengen "cooking house" (vail ta) in Pomio, #PapuaNewGuinea. Each household has one and it is where the married couple and uninitiated children live. The women in the photo are heating stones of an earth oven (svoin) and preparing taro to be roasted in it.

Food cooked in the earth oven is presented especially during ceremonial gift exchanges.

  9. Good morning! Here's a lovely offshore #FridayFieldPhoto from a spot a hundred or so miles off the coast of Florianópolis, Brazil, in the south Atlantic Ocean.

  10. Happy #FieldPhotoFriday! Here's a photo from 2016 of a Bryde's whale (Balaenoptera edeni) we encountered and tagged in an offshore region of the Santos Basin, Brazil. The carbon fiber pole I'm holding has a digital acoustic tag (DTAG) on the end of it. The DTAG attaches to the whale via four suction cups. I'm about to pop the tag on the whale in this photo. Questions? #AMA

  11. Time for another #FridayFieldworkPhoto from #InglefieldBredning #Greenland from June 2021.

In the field, everyone lends a hand: Here we are hauling up the mooring that my #DMIdk colleague #SteffenOlsen leaves out every year to measure ocean temperature, salinity etc through the winter using #SeaIce as a #science platform.
The red buoy marks the position, the water here is 3-500m deep so pulling it up from the bottom takes some time + muscle power.

  16. Friday means time for #FieldPhotoFriday (or if you prefer #FridayFieldworkPhoto #FridayFieldPhoto)

These were some of the first #IceFlowers I ever saw on #SeaIce this spring. Made me realise there was more going on in that part of the #Cryosphere than I'd imagined and I should pay it more attention!

Astonishingly beautiful and fragile, they grow on #SeaIceleads by evaporation+ condensation. Fascinating #FluidDynamics and surprisingly #salty tasting!

  21. #FridayFieldworkPhoto no. 3

Palm oil is pumped onto a tanker in the East Pomio (East New Britain), #PapuaNewGuinea. The tug boat next to the ship help with pulling the palm oil hose connecting the pipeline coming from the mill to the ship.

In the background coconut plantings and garden lands of the village community next to the plantation.

  25. Should I/we try to make some #FieldworkPhoto prompts for #FridayFieldPhoto (or #FieldPhotoFriday)?

    In the style of #30DayMapChallenge?
Suggestions for prompts in the replies please! 👇

After #DML had been in Covid lockdown for a couple of weeks seeing Lidia again was wonderful. Despite being over eighty years old she's beautiful.

Time for a #FridayFieldPhoto and given the #30DayMapChallenge I posted yesterday showing the #NorthWaterPolynya - here is (sort of) what it looks like on the ground: some of our local collaborators, hunters, watching #Narwhal swimming at the edge of the #SeaIce inside the #polynya near #Qaanaaq in NW #Greenland
