A typical North Mengen "cooking house" (vail ta) in Pomio, #PapuaNewGuinea. Each household has one and it is where the married couple and uninitiated children live. The women in the photo are heating stones of an earth oven (svoin) and preparing taro to be roasted in it.
Food cooked in the earth oven is presented especially during ceremonial gift exchanges.

Happy #FieldPhotoFriday! Here's a photo from 2016 of a Bryde's whale (Balaenoptera edeni) we encountered and tagged in an offshore region of the Santos Basin, Brazil. The carbon fiber pole I'm holding has a digital acoustic tag (DTAG) on the end of it. The DTAG attaches to the whale via four suction cups. I'm about to pop the tag on the whale in this photo. Questions? #AMA

The red buoy marks the position, the water here is 3-500m deep so pulling it up from the bottom takes some time + muscle power.

Astonishingly beautiful and fragile, they grow on #SeaIceleads by evaporation+ condensation. Fascinating #FluidDynamics and surprisingly #salty tasting!
