    Iron Maiden - Invaders

Longboats have been sighted and the evidence of war has begun
Many Nordic fighting men, their swords and shields gleam in the sun
Call to arms, defend yourselves, get ready to stand and fight for your lives
Judgement day has come around, so be prepared, don't run, stand your ground

They're coming in from the sea
    They've come, the enemy
    Beneath the blazing sun
The battle has to be won

    Invaders pillaging
    Invaders looting

First I knew of 9/11 was sitting at my desk in the office in London seeing a CNN headline email coming in saying a plane had flown into one of the WTC towers. I was still trying to figure out what that meant (Was it an accident? How big a plane? etc) when another came in saying a second plane had done the same. I then knew it wasn't an accident. I can still remember all of us in reception watching the towers collapsing on the TV.

Written as a tribute to the firefighters climbing the towers

    Bruce Springsteen - The Rising

Can't see nothing in front of me
Can't see nothing coming up behind
Make my way through this darkness
I can't feel nothing but this chain that binds me
Lost track of how far I've gone
How far I've gone, how high I've climbed
On my back's a sixty pound stone
On my shoulder, a half-mile line

Come on up for the rising
Come on up, lay your hands in mine
Come on up for the rising
Come on up for the rising tonight

@debe posted a song by Cliff Richard called Makin' History which reminded me of Making History by Adam and the Ants. This song was one of several differences between the UK and US versions of King of the Wild Frontier, slotted between Jolly Roger and The Human Beings on Side 2 where the Americans got Physical (You're So).

  14. History Repeats.

    🎶Same old energy, baby
    History repeats
    Same old energy, baby
They’ll march you through the streets
    Same old energy, baby
They fear what they don't know
    Same old energy, baby
    You've burned this way before🎶

  16. Real or fictional, still a great historical figure. And a great old show (as I recall… re-watching it might ruin the nostalgia, though, eh?)

  18. The #JukeboxFridayNight theme tonight is #History. So I'll have to chime in with

The Tragically Hip "Fifty Mission Cap"

🎶Bill Barilko disappeared that summer (in nineteen fifty one)
He was on a fishing trip (in a plane)
The last goal he ever scored (in over time)
    Won the Leafs the cup
They didn't win another till nineteen sixty two
    The year he was discovered🎶

  19. For this week's jukebox music theme, History, here is "Cold Missouri Waters", written and sung by James Keelaghan. The song tells the story of the 1949 Mann Gulch wildfire, which killed 13 of the 16 firefighters trapped by the fire. The fire was much-studied, and led to a re-evaluation of wildfire fighting safety techniques.

"But the fire crowned, jumped the valley just ahead,
There was no way down, headed for the ridge instead,
Too big to fight it, we'd have to fight that slope instead,
Flames one step behind, above the cold Missouri waters."

  20. #Prince & #ChuckD
    Live in #Melbourne

The reason why this is a personal #JukeboxFridayNight #History for me is I was there that night.

Story goes Public Enemy had just arrived in Melbourne that day to start their Australia tour and got invites to Prince's gig. Chuck D was told during the start of this bass jam by one of Prince's people that Prince wanted him to come up on stage.

    This is what happened:

  21. For this week's jukebox music theme, History, here is "Like a Mountain: Can't Kill the Spirit", by Naomi Littlebear Morena. It was written in 1977 and was originally the anthem of the women's anti-nuclear movement. Thirty thousand women held hands and sang while surrounding the Greenham Commons Nuclear Cruise Missile site in the UK. The song sustained that protest for 20 years. In the years since, it been adopted by various other protest movements. This recording features Marilyn Keller as the soloist.

    "You can't kill the Spirit,
    She is like a mountain,
    Old and strong,
She goes on an on and on,
    She is like a mountain."

  22. On a more cheerful note from the #history I've been sharing for #JukeboxFridayNight here's a pic for #FootpathFriday from my recent clifftop camp in Cornwall (which, for me, has its own history, as I've been coming here - St Agnes/Porthtowan - since I was a nipper!)

  24. History is composed of stories - here's one to close the evening from me.

    "As I was goin' over
    The Cork and Kerry mountains
    I saw Captain Farrell
And his money, he was countin'
    I first produced my pistol
    And then produced my rapier
I said, 'Stand o'er and deliver
Or the Devil, he may take ya' "

  25. For the #History theme for this week's #JukeBoxFridayNight, here's "Prisoner" by Scottish folk singer Dick Gaughan. My father introdued me to this song and it's stuck with me. At the time I'd known nothing of German Nobel Peace Prize winner Carl von Ossietzky and his fate.

Caution: it's a grim song, with an uneasy message. We cannot let this history repeat.

    "In the struggle against injustice
He fought hard and he fought long
    Child - remember Ossietsky
Peace won't come by words alone"

  31. For this week's jukebox music theme, History, here is "Solomon Browne", written and sung by Seth Lakeman, a song about the 1981 Penlee Lifeboat disaster. The RNLI lifeboat Solomon Browne went to rescue five sailors aboard the Union Star after her engines failed off the coast of Cornwall. Sixteen people died, including 8 RNLI volunteers.

"At fair Mount's Bay, on that Christmas week,
Was such a raging storm, no man could speak,
That lifeboat thundered through an angry sea,
Was called Solomon Browne and her company,
    With courage, it was called,
On our heroes brave and bold,
    With courage, it was cold,
    On board that night."
