  1. Four out of five (and six out of seven). I'll take that.

And the Twiglet fanfic can continue, with Alis next to "Bella".

  2. My top five:
    - "Bangaranga" (BNT)
    - "Choke me" (TVR)
    - "Alice" (SRG SSR)
    - "Før Vi Går Hjem" (DR)
    - "Eclipse" (SBS)

Really loved "Regarde!" (FT), and rather liked "Bella" (PBS).

  3. @losttourist The current Top Twenty Hit Parade contains four records old enough to have been on the original Top of the Pops, and another one that pre-dates the "time-based one-time password" spec.

An observer might conclude that "vintage music" and "contemporary music" are one and the same thing.

  4. "Contact" - Edwin Starr

Contact with Flick of the Wrist? Tell us this is a Hand-some Peter Powell episode without telling us it's a Hand-some Peter Powell episode.

  5. "Never ever" / "Under the bridge" - All Saints

"Never ever" is one of very few songs to appear on two Christmas shows.

The live performance of "Under the bridge" was certainly different. Can't say i love it.

  6. "I love the way you love me" - Boyzone

Remember when Boyzone made uptempo songs you could move your feet to? Us neither; feels like they've always been grannies-in-waiting.

"War of nerves" - All Saints

Unlike certain other acts, All Saints kept pushing themselves to do different and experimental things. It is in the nature of experiments that not all will succeed.

  7. "Children" - Robert Miles.

The tune I must have heard most this year, never grew old or tiresome without having some different element come to the fore.

Note how the string orchestra are all wearing Dame Edna dark glasses, as though they're saving the world from runaway possums and then wiping our memory of the threat.

  8. "One and one" - Robert Miles featuring Maria Nayler

Vies with Belinda as my favourite tune of this episode. Am always a pushover for warming Italio-house, and this one's like supping from a fresh mug of hot chocolate.

  9. Robert Miles has another hit. It is different. Promise.

"Fable" picks up where "Children" left off, a trippy dreamscape with pulsing beat and lush strings. New age stylings were the fashion in '96, and Fiorella Quinn adds some wailing.

The album "Dreamland" was one of about ten I heard a lot this summer, and it's basically this tune extended to an hour.

  10. "Satisfaction" is familiar - sounds like every Prince funk wig-out from the past five years.

And it's modern without sounding modern, the gals were about four years ahead of the curve with a jazzy number for warm summers evenings. Why this didn't replace Gun at number one remains a mystery.

  11. Wendy and Lisa are in the studio for "Satisfaction". Corks, to be in the studio tonight!

The couple are Prince protogées, and write in the funky vein of The Purple Miniature.

"Satisfaction" has Lisa behind the keyboards with the sumptuous groove, Wendy does some excellent guitar work and takes lead vocals.
