FRANKENSTEIN ON A CHIP 💎
HAVE WE THOUGHT THIS THROUGH?I watched a creepy video this morning:
We're Not Ready for Biocomputing
https://youtu.be/uKhsbQcFVwQ?si=ByqFGsi-gpr4qw64Researchers at Cortical Labs have built a biological computing system using around 200,000 living human neurons connected to electrodes.
The neurons receive signals, respond to feedback, and contribute to controlling a computer game. They demonstrated it with Doom.
There is currently no evidence that these neurons are conscious or suffering.
The video pushes that idea further than the science supports. Much of the Doom system is ordinary computing, with the neurons contributing a smaller but real part.
But I kept thinking about Frankenstein.
The curse of Frankenstein was not simply that Victor created something new.
It was that he created something and then failed to take responsibility for what he had created.
That seems rather relevant.
Researchers are already working with increasingly sophisticated human neural tissue, including three-dimensional brain organoids.
So perhaps we need one simple principle now:
LIVING HUMAN NEURAL TISSUE SHOULD NOT LOSE ETHICAL CONSIDERATION SIMPLY BECAUSE IT IS OUTSIDE A HUMAN BODY.
That does not mean a dish of neurons is a person.
It does not mean these neurons are suffering.
It means we should not wait until something can clearly tell us that it suffers before deciding we have obligations toward it.
Inside a skull, living human brain tissue is treated with extraordinary care.
Put similar tissue on a chip, call it “computing substrate”, and our responsibility should not simply disappear.
These systems are still relatively simple.
But the whole direction of biocomputing is toward systems that are more organised, more adaptive and more complex.
That is why the ethics need sorting out before we get there.
Frankenstein’s mistake was not curiosity.
It was creating first and asking what he owed his creation afterwards.
We have already started creating.
Perhaps this time we should ask the question early:
AT WHAT POINT DO WE OWE THE THING WE HAVE GROWN SOME CONSIDERATION?
I would rather we answer that before we build something we can no longer confidently say has no awareness.

Mary Shelley’s Gothic Dundee
26 August, online
SWI members free; non-members £6.13Mary Shelley was sent to Dundee as a teenager, & it was here, so she claimed in the 1831 edition of FRANKENSTEIN, that her eerie imagination was first stirred. What was so “gothic” about Dundee in the 1810s? And how did it inspire her? Prof Daniel Cook investigates.

Too Many Frankensteins
Why does no one ever read the end of the story? Or if they do, why don’t they pay attention?
Ever since Mary Shelley gave us Frankenstein, laying out a moral of a story proving that just because you can, doesn’t mean you should, there seems to be a preponderance of ignorance running alongside the obvious capabilities our current day Dr. Frankensteins possess. It feels like the story is playing on an endless Youtube Short or TikTok or Reel without ever reaching the end and the story’s point. The only thing coming close to the volume of ignorance is the overdose of hubris that someone must be selling somewhere on some street corner. Or maybe it’s testosterone injections.
Whatever it is, whether in tech and AI, politics, sports, media, or fill in the blank for any field that can issue a press release and attract attention like flies to rotting flesh, it’s past the epidemic stage and has spread like a plague.
The fever stokes flames on Wall Street, which seems content to fuel them further until it all melts down. As long as they make their fees. Makes one wonder how the prediction markets on any number of popping bubbles are doing?
Between AI companies climbing over each other to fight over which model can cause more damage when they break free, companies creating horror movie-like robots to do damage control in dangerous circumstances, companies working to create AI powered glasses that will be used for mass surveillance — much less trouble making privacy violations, the tech sector seems to be outrunning the rest when it comes to the mad scientist wannabe game.
Politicians aren’t far behind, lagging only by their inability to keep up with and understand the changes happening around them as they count the cash being stuffed in their pockets. Sports teams intent on winning today don’t seem to care that they may be permanently damaging their game.
And there’s a media that doesn’t actually care who wins and who loses as long as they have access to the story of the rise and the story of the fall. Imagine if today’s media had covered Dr. Frankenstein’s efforts the way they cover Musk, Altman, Zuckerberg, or any of the others.
It’s too broad a generalization to say these stories never end well, even though many fail whether the consequences are intended or not. But in a world seemingly being driven by a bunch of geeks who profess a love for science fiction, and those who can’t help but take their money to drive their own ambitions, you’d think someone along the way would understand that they don’t get to write the end.
But that would require more than reading a summary.
Thanks for reading. You can subscribe to this blog if you care to. You can also find more of my writings on a variety of topics on Medium at this link, including in the publications Ellemeno and Rome. I can also be found on social media under my name as above. This site does not use affilate links.

Swimming the Author
England tested witches with water. The suspect was bound, right thumb to left toe, looped to a rope, and lowered into the village pond. Pure water was believed to refuse the devil's servant, so a body that floated was guilty and a body that sank was innocent, and the innocent were hauled up half-drowned to receive the town's apology. The procedure was called swimming a witch, and its genius was architectural: it could only convict. Whatever the water did, the crowd on the bank went home with the verdict it had carried down to the shore. Four centuries on, the pond fits in a browser tab. Paste the chapter. Click the button. Let the water decide. […] -

On this final Friday of my summer break before I return to begin a new school year, I’ve got turbulent thoughts swirling in my bewildered head. I start the year #teaching #Frankenstein and will have to find a way to temper my growing urge to rant furiously about the parallels to the #AI monster the tech bros have created. But unlike in the Mary Shelley universe, we’ve allowed this monster born out of hubris to seep into our reality and destroy us from within instead. #literature #Bookstodon

To my niece, and sister,
This book, "12 Bytes," is by one of my favorite authors, Jeanette Winterson.
This book tells us where we come from.
And possibly where we are going. Her writing is, well, specific. Listen in
full every word, phrase, sentence, and
paragraph. (OK, you can skip the sex dolls article. It is disgusting.)Jeanette Winterson's sources are well researched and accurate.
Why can't a fiction writer expound on the history, great and flawed, and movement of computing. I, myself, lived through and survived, with bruises, from 1979 through 2018 to today. I think it takes the mind of a fiction writer to comprehend the competing messages.
I also recommend that you read Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" to absorb references to Mary Shelley, if you haven't already. "Frankenstein" is particularly pertinent to perspectives on AI themes.

This week's #NewBooks at the library:
- I found a much reduced copy of Contesting Earth's History in Transatlantic Literary Culture, 1860–1935: Believers and Visionaries on the Borderlines of #Geology and #Palaeontology, published by Oxford University Press
- I was so taken with Guillermo del Toro's visual take on #Frankenstein, I bought the book on the making of the movie by Sheila O'Malley, published by Titan Books.
- I found a second-hand copy of The Spirit of System: #Lamarck and #EvolutionaryBiology, published by Harvard University Press, which should come in handy for a future review on Lamarck.#Books #Bookstodon #Paleontology #HistoryOfScience #ScienceHistory #HistSci #Evolution #Scicomm @bookstodon

Synthetic biology has taken a big step forward.
I’m generally bullish on the potential with equal measures of caution and horror. One of the many advances that is going to destabilize our world views.

"Resulta curioso cómo la metáfora de lo ajeno y lo desconocido, materializada en el monstruo, sigue vigente. Esta figura –cuyo único espacio ha sido el arte– es el recipiente por excelencia de nuestros miedos culturales; el límite que transgrede y ayuda a diferenciar lo “natural” de lo que no lo es."

The best parody movies are also tributes to the films or genres they are riffing on, which is why Young Frankenstein works so well. It was obviously made by real fans of Universal Horror and they did the extra work to make the film look and feel like a Universal monster flick.
