“What do you mean?” Milo Hart took the comment calmly, though he probably would have decked the man back in port. Here, on board the ship, an altercation would get you reprimanded or fired. It was a good job that paid well. It was a darn sight better than being a dirt farmer back home. If he didn’t lose this job, he could marry Sally when the trip was done.
“I saw you out on the first-class promenade. You don’t belong there. And with a guest.”
“She asked me to escort her. She was feeling ill and needed air.” Hart made up an excuse on the fly. He had always been good at that. It might not have been true, but no one would ever know.
“She talks to herself,” and the other steward touched his head. “Be careful, you’ll get into trouble!”
“You trying to #gin up problems? Going to report me if I do a guest a favor?”
“No, I just worry about you. You’ve been odd recently.”
“Don’t fret. I have a sinking feeling it won’t matter for long. I’m usually right when I have these feelings too.”

#Wss366 Brief / Hemingway's birthday #TimeTravelAuthors Fixing“Doctor Silence, it is the most disconcerting feeling. I can no longer read. If I pick up a book, I soon enter a fugue state and am transported to that time and place.”
I was seated in a room painted a calming green. A servant had provided me with a chair that was inexplicably nailed to the floor. The doctor sat across from me listening intently.
If I had to describe him, I would first say he matched his name. He gave off a quiet air of calm, despite an eerie aura. His whole manner left you convinced he was both incalculably benevolent and knowledgeable. As for his dress, he wore a tasteful plum smoking jacket, for I had arrived at his consult in the early evening, far past normal visiting hours.
“Go on,” he said. “How did it start?”
“The first time it happened, I was reading ‘Time Machine’ by H.G. Wells. I was nearing the end when I had the most realistic dream that I was walking under a dim sun by the sea. On the beach were alien, muddy-brown crabs of enormous size. The experience was quite #brief, and I awoke presently.”
“Only it wasn’t a dream, was it?” the doctor said.
I relaxed; he understood. I knew there was an alternate chamber with padded walls for delusional visitors. That they hadn’t taken me to it should have been reassuring, but it was good to see tangible evidence that Dr. Silence accepted my bizarre story.
“No, but I didn’t know it. It seemed too fantastic to think I was actually traveling to those times and places.”
Forgetting the chair was immobile, I attempted to scoot closer to my audience. After a nervous laugh, I continued. “I had several more experiences of this nature: a visit to the Khyber Pass; Paris during the French Revolution; and a 1920s speakeasy. I rather enjoyed the dreams. They were so vivid and realistic, each longer than the last. I felt quite safe, since if anything bad happens, I’ll wake up, which is something I can generally force myself to do.”
“When did you realize?” Silent asked.
“I was reading #Hemingway’s ‘For Whom the Bell Tolls’ and found myself in a crowded Spanish tavern. There was a fellow American there, and I offered to buy him a drink. We fell to talking, him about being a war correspondent. I was excited to actually be talking to a famous author and, well, one thing led to another, and I told him I was from the future and that the Republicans would lose the war. He laughed. I don’t think he believed me.”

Like it’s just so specific? I’ve done the quote-and-summary thing before, but it’s the very specific format of “quote-or-colon-logline” that’s, like. This has to have come from somewhere???

Today’s Random Fic Thing: This story keeps talking about “oniguri” and I’m like . . . is this a typo or some kind of secret not-onigiri food that neither I nor google know about???
I even slowly and painstakingly typed “おにぐり” out on the Japanese keyboard and the search engine just gave me results for おにぎり, so like . . .???
. . . now they’re talking about “omeboshi” so, okay. Odd typos it is.

#Wss366 Forlorn #MastoPrompt MushDays passed. Rumors that the Moon Prince had been ill arose and then subsided. On this particular day, a #forlorn rain fell. Few people were out to tread the #mushy churned road, yet both Flag and The Mad Frank were plying their trade. The former sought aid from passersby, while the latter sought to save their souls. Neither was having any luck.
Late morning came, and one of The Frank's few "regulars" stopped to speak with him. Soon after, The Frank disappeared, and then the beggar vanished as well.
She was back by evening to do tricks for the street steward’s son. Among these, she extracted a larger coin than usual from the boy’s ear. “Ah, Flag sees you’re holding out on the boss,” she said, and passed the coin to the father, being careful not to reveal the note hidden behind it.
