  6. Titanic Steward: Fragment I

“Hey, Hart. What are you thinking? Are you stupid?” One of the other Titanic stewards asked.

“What do you mean?” Milo Hart took the comment calmly, though he probably would have decked the man back in port. Here, on board the ship, an altercation would get you reprimanded or fired. It was a good job that paid well. It was a darn sight better than being a dirt farmer back home. If he didn’t lose this job, he could marry Sally when the trip was done.

“I saw you out on the first-class promenade. You don’t belong there. And with a guest.”

“She asked me to escort her. She was feeling ill and needed air.” Hart made up an excuse on the fly. He had always been good at that. It might not have been true, but no one would ever know.

“She talks to herself,” and the other steward touched his head. “Be careful, you’ll get into trouble!”

“You trying to #gin up problems? Going to report me if I do a guest a favor?”

“No, I just worry about you. You’ve been odd recently.”

“Don’t fret. I have a sinking feeling it won’t matter for long. I’m usually right when I have these feelings too.”

  16. Rocky’s Treat

    #FanFic #TitanicVoyage @juliebihn
    #Wss366 Paramount #TimeTravelAuthors 08/5. bitter/sour/mean #WritersCoffeeClub

“I think it’s funny,” Clara said.

She stood wide-eyed in front of the counter at a small café at one end of the town’s only mall. Clara had adjusted to the mall more quickly than Liam had expected. ‘It’s just like a shopping street in New York—brighter, cleaner and covered—but not that different.’

The movie they had gone to, “Lieutenant Nightingale,” was quite another thing. She had been stunned.

“I saw ‘The Miser’s Heart,’ and that was nothing like that movie,” Clara said of the film. “I prefer the kind of moving pictures Mary Pickford used to star in."

"They were so casual about the 'you know what.'" She blushed. "But I liked that Miss Nightingale wasn’t a poor little thing. Little Kathy was so useless in ‘Miser’s Heart.’ But Barrymore, the thief, was dreamy. But this had so much color and sound; you could hear what they said.”

They had just left the #Paramount film “Lieutenant Nightingale,” a superhero film picked by Rocky. “I pay, I pick um,” he had said.

Liam was just happy that his friend had settled on a film featuring a female superhero. If he had had more money, he would have taken Clara to something more romantic, but being unemployed and the expense of setting Clara up in an apartment had drained what little resources he had. It was all he could do to treat them to a drink at the Mesa Café.

    “What’s funny?” Rocky asked.

Clara pointed to a candy jar on the counter. “Penny candy that cost a quarter.”

“It’s just a saying,” Liam explained.

Meanwhile, Rocky picked out a pink gummy worm and paid for it. “Here, Clara. Bet you’ve never had candy like this.”

She looked dubiously at the long pink thing he handed her.

“Go on, take a bite,” Rocky prompted.

Liam opened his mouth to protest, but too late. Clara took a bite, then made a face. “You’re so #mean, Rocky! It’s #sour!”

“What did you expect?” He pointed to the label on the jar, which read “Extra sour peach gummy worms.”

  17. Charlotte’s Web Part 2

    #Fanfic #WanderingWitch #CharlottesWeb #AnimalFarm
    #Wss366 lodge #ScribesAndMakers π11 It all started when…

I stopped and looked around. The only creature visible was the pig, so I asked, “Did you speak, Mr. Pig?”

“I did. I am Napoleon, president of the great farm. And you, young lady, were about to destroy the fine work of my Minister of Education, Miss Charlotte.”

“I don’t see Miss Charlotte’s work, Comrade Napoleon.” I figured from what I had seen that the title would endear me to the swine.

“It’s ‘Your Excellency.’ Some animals are created more equal than others, and I am one such. And if you just look beyond your nose, you will see the fine tapestry, woven by Minister Charlotte.”

Now that I looked, there was a spider’s web that I had been about to brush aside. “That is indeed a fine web, Your Excellency. It even has writing in it: ‘Alternate Facts are True Facts.’ That is an interesting statement.”

“Indeed, and yesterday it read, ‘Rage is Freedom.’ That was something I said in a speech.”

I nodded. I didn’t understand how that worked, but I wouldn’t openly disagree. Instead, I brought up my reason for visiting. “The sign says I can get food and lodging here. Is that true?”

“Are you an ambassador from one of the local farms?”

    “No, I’m just a wanderer.”

“Then we can #lodge you in the North Pasture and provide a bucket of raw oats and hay.”

“Oats and hay?” I asked incredulously.

“All animals are created equal, and if oats and hay are good enough for the donkey, they are good enough for you.”

“Perhaps you might find something better. Maybe bread? I am not used to oats and hay.”

“I see the minister has woven you an answer.”

When I looked, the web had changed. An enormous spider sat in its middle; around it was spelled out: “Half the oats at half the quality is good economics.”

What kind of warped reasoning was that, I wondered?

“I will have the dogs show you the way,” Napoleon said. He waved, and a pack of dogs came from a nearby thicket.

“Oh, dear!” I exclaimed. “I forgot I’m expected down the road a way this evening. I’m so sorry to have bothered you, Your Excellency.” The dogs looked fierce and were giving me the evil eye. Besides, who had ever heard of feeding guests raw oats and bedding them in a pasture?

There was a swine-like grunt, which I took for a farewell, and I hastily retired. After all, “Retreat is the highest form of bravery.”

  18. Charlotte’s Web Part 1

    #Fanfic #WanderingWitch #CharlottesWeb #AnimalFarm
#Wss366 Sty #ScribesAndMakers π11 It all started when...

It all started when the witch got lost. The country she was going to wasn’t supposed to be far, yet the sun was nearing the horizon, and the only signs of civilization were neat country farms. Hunger gripped her belly, and she descended from the sky to view the signs posted outside the farmhouses.

Brushing her long, ashen hair away from her amethyst eyes, she read a small sign next to a farm gate: “Eggs.”

Eggs would be fine if she could cook them, but that seemed unlikely at the moment. What she wanted was bread and a place to sleep. A hay loft would do, but a proper bed would be better. Her pointy hat, long black robe, and the witch’s star brooch often impressed country folk, and she could trade fortunetelling for a meal and bed. The announcement that they would have a two-headed chicken in the spring or that their ewe would twin usually clinched the deal.

Who, you might ask, is this clever lady? It is, of course, I, Elaina the Ashen Witch.

There was no help for it; eggs were out, so I continued on my way.

The next farm had a sign next to a stile. Beyond was a #sty with an enormous, fat pig that examined me closely. Still further away, I saw a collapsed windmill and a barn with the words “All Animals are Equal” written on the side. An odd slogan for a farm, I thought.

What interested me most was the sign, though, and after a bit of puzzling over the poor spelling and odd writing, I made out what it said: “Fod and Ladging fer all COMERADES.” I was unsure if I were a comerade or even a comrade, but given the late hour, it was worth a try. I could definitely use “fod” and “ladging.”

“Hold there, comrade,” came a voice as I mounted the stile, “can’t you see the marquee?”

  19. The Mad Frank's Dreams: Post 6 Chue’s Con 1 of 2 parts

    #FanFic #TheApothecaryDiaries
    #Wss366 Rack #MastoPrompt Volume

Since it was pointless #racking her brains for an escape plan, Chue went to sleep.

She awoke to the sound of the door scraping open. Her head still hurt, but when she opened her eyes a slit, the room didn’t spin. In the doorway stood two burly men, brothers by the look of them. The elder held a tray in his hands, two steaming bowls balanced on it. Bile rose in her throat as the sour smell of boiled millet reached her.

The other man had a cudgel by his side, but Chue didn’t think she could wrestle it away from him in time to use it. She might take one down, but the other would easily defeat her in the process. So she would have to out-talk them.

The first man spoke, “Told ya you hit the yese too hard. Prophet wants her alive.” He nodded toward the bed. Chue didn’t recognize the term “yese,” but it sounded like a foreign slur.

Her thoughts were still slow, but she worked on understanding, knowing that any clue might be important. The Mad Frank sometimes called the courtesans “yesebel” when he was in a foul mood. But even if they were the same, that didn’t help her.

The second man toed her. “Wake up, honey child. The prophet says, to eat.”

She opened her eyes fully. “Water.” The words came out as a raspy whisper. Food sounded revolting, but she thought she could manage a drink.

The water from a gourd she had been given tasted wonderful. She sipped it while examining the two men. Their worn clothes marked them as poor. Hard muscles indicated individuals who did manual labor. Scars made by fists, not edged weapons, marred their faces, so they weren’t mercenaries. Ears in good shape meant they weren’t professional brawlers either. However, they held themselves with the assurance of men accustomed to getting their way through brute force: enforcers, perhaps, mercenaries of a different type, hired from the underworld.
