  2. Could anyone who has seen and felt psychologically uncomfortable during Funny Games (1997) suggest similar films? My own suggestions are:
    • Midsommar (2019),
    • Eden Lake (2008),
    • Mother! (2017).

  3. Mercy (2026)

    Mercy (2026)

In the near future, a detective is accused of murdering his wife. Tried by a highly advanced artificial intelligence – one he himself helped to develop – he has just 90 minutes to prove his innocence… before it seals his fate.

So, I have no doubt that if AIs were to start judging us in court, they would do an even worse job than real judges, who are, admittedly, human, but just as corrupt. And that could well happen soon!

In this feature film, we find ourselves in a world where everything is filmed, everyone is under surveillance, yet they can’t figure out who’s guilty of a crime against a woman?

Unbelievable! A film categorised under so many genres: Action, Drama, Crime, Mystery, Science Fiction and Thriller! It sounds completely mad! But surprisingly, it isn’t categorised as Horror… even though there’s plenty to get the blood running! Indeed, we’re not that far off from such cutting-edge technology. The army must have had it for a while now.

Anyway, the fact is that this film feels a bit like a rollercoaster ride, juggling from one genre to another – thriller, action film, dystopian courtroom drama, family drama, and even sci-fi. Basically, it’s rather a flop and poorly made. I didn’t really buy into this near future fuelled by AI and flying machines!

The excellent Chris Pratt is also called Chris in this film! Chris Raven.

Pratt has become one of the most recognisable faces in American blockbusters. In 2014, he joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Guardians of the Galaxy. His role as Peter Quill / Star-Lord brought him worldwide fame and secured him numerous appearances in MCU productions.

So… this film starts off with a good idea, but that’s as far as it goes!

Perhaps Chris Pratt should stick to keeping order in the land of the dinosaurs! Seeing him here, apart from a few minutes, strapped to a chair for the entire film whilst he tries to provide the necessary evidence of his innocence, hampered by his past alcohol consumption – results in most of the film being confusing, jittery and disorganised, with rapid cuts, digital effects and, above all, footage shot using on-board and handheld cameras. It’s extremely tiring and of a rather low standard.

On the other hand, the few special effects have been described as awful or as the worst part of the film. I don’t agree at all. They’re actually not bad. Although I do understand those who say that the truck chase scenes, shot entirely in CGI, are enough to make you want to throw up!

Timur Bekmambetov had already made the relatively poor and unsuccessful Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (2012), as well as the rather mediocre Wanted (2008). And the actors are never the problem with these films. It’s worth noting that Night Watch (2004) is the worst of them all, and I didn’t even want to watch its sequel. It had been a while since I’d thought back to Speed (1994). Indeed, in both these films, quite a few people die… in order to save others. It’s always rather tragic!

Of course, we’ll also think back to the excellent Minority Report (2002), which did a great job of exploring the idea of a guilty cop being judged by technology.

Incidentally, Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson filmed all their scenes separately, and you can tell all the time. Chris always receives completely unjustified criticism, often relating to his private life. If he’s dreadful and one-dimensional, it’s mainly because he’s actually a good actor who isn’t like that elsewhere!

As for Rebecca, she does the bare minimum by being perfectly expressionless and icy. What could be more normal, given that she’s playing the role of an AI! That said, I’ve read that this was her best film. I wonder what the others must be like, then!

Well, anyway, Mercy was a stratospheric flop at the box office and flopped miserably in the rest of the world. It has to be said that even the poster is unbelievably awful (worthy of a direct-to-video release). This film would have been much better suited to a streaming platform rather than hitting cinemas – sometimes (or rather, often) you just can’t make sense of it!

  8. #WritersCoffeeClub #WCC 2026.08.18 — What are your limits for writing outside your lived experience? (race, nation, gender, etc.)

My limits? Can I do this and be believable? That is, not throw somebody from the story by my ignorance?

I don't write mainstream fiction or fiction that is set in our society. I'm not mainstream. I have not lived a mainstream life. Mainstream people bore me. This doesn't mean I have no lived experience; I bring it in bushels to my stories. I've worked. I've traveled to and lived in other countries. I studied non-western societies, their art, music, and theatre, as well as folklore and mythology. A trans man lived with us when I grew up. I have gay and lesbian relatives. My ultra-feminist mother was a bailbondswoman. Discovering the true patriarchal nature of society when I was old enough to understand shocked me. I disbelieved. I disbelieve; I have no religion, but I've studied it intensely. The mass fantasy fascinates me. Oh, the point about bailbonds? I grew knowing criminals. Called some uncle (an honorific a child uses.)

I don't write mystery, historical, or military for reasons of verisimilitude. I don't think I can write what most people consider normal society. I write SF and fantasy because, to use a reference that's outdated and dates me too boot, I control the horizontal, I control the vertical. Race I sidestep usually by never describing certain details and never making it part of the story, except when I do. Rather than nations, I'll cite language: I rarely use other than English, and then advisedly, consulting. Gender? I write about that all the time. I have gender and preferences though I never state them of myself, and other's conceptions of gender fascinate me. I wish they'd be more happy about theirs, and I write about that, too.

I have an SFF story based on my study of shamanism in Europe and the Americas. The woman is Native American and so far that's stifled me, but I'm thinking that she's also been assimilated, knows her roots from reading, soul travel from her mother, but was never raised in-culture, parents divorced. That I can write. With enough respect not to anger any but appropriationist trolls. Linked find a not very refined crack at a start for that story, a bit of a proof of concept, too concise needing fleshing out because I wrote it in 2023 to fit in a toot with 7 characters to spare!

  12. Book Review: ‘Murder Your Employer’ by Rupert Holmes

Murder Your Employer is a novel I wanted to read based on the title alone.

The story begins following Cliff Iverson. He’s on his way to – you guessed it – murder his employer. His employer caused the suicide of the woman he liked, and the murder of his best friend, all of whom worked for the same company. And he got fired in the process. But he fails in his “deletion”. And two mysterious folks are hot on his trail, but they don’t want to arrest him. Instead, Cliff Iverson ends up at an academy for wannabe murderers, with his tuition fees paid for by a mysterious benefactor. Think of it kind of like Hogwarts for adults instead of children, and for wannabe murderers instead of magic users.

Once we get into it, we begin following two characters we meet along the way. They each have people they want to off, and their own reasons for wanting to do so. One is a nurse, Gemma, being blackmailed by her boss. The other is an actress, Dulcie, being blacklisted by hers. Each of the characters we meet are unique and likeable – even the bad ones. The plot is full of twists and turns, and you’ll be begging to know who survives the academy, and then who succeeds in the titular instruction. The writing is witty and clever, chock full of puns and plays on words. There are so many that many fly under the radar and go unnoticed. But they never become annoying or get in the way. The book is humorous already, but these additions elevate Holmes’s writing.

Oh, and in case you didn’t know, the Rupert Holmes (fitting surname) who wrote this is the same Rupert Holmes of Escape (The Piña Colada Song) fame. So you can make a playlist for your reading sessions.

I’m not a massive murder mystery fan (although this feels more like a ‘will they murder mystery’). Yet, I couldn’t resist this book’s charms. It pulled me in right away and kept my attention all the way through.

If you like dark humour, give this book a go; if you have similar tastes to me, you’ll find it delightful.
