  1. This is What Happened was a fun diversion. The end inh isn't as strong as the rest of the book, but there are a couple of nice twists. It's entirely sep6from the #SlowHorses world, but still a good thriller.
So... onward to the final (so far) installment of the main event! Clown Town is up next!

  2. Get the feeling Slow Horses is an aspiration for the real MI5?
I mean, what ARE they doing apart from spying on Grandmas protesting Genocide?
Who do they protect, Us or Them?*

  3. If you've read some of the mainline books, you're immediately let in on one of the big reveals (in fact, you are sort of on a knife edge waiting for it). The story is also tied very nicely into the backstory of the other books with David Cartwright, and Charlie Partner. We also get tonnes of back story on Molly and Jackson (like the idea that, at this point, Jackson can make a bottle of whisky last 2 weeks). It's a feast for anyone that has read 2 or 3 of the mainline books.

  4. The 4 or 5 central characters are entirely new, and due to a key plot element, almost all the other characters we know are anonymised. I think if you've not read any of the books it'd still be a cracking romp through Heron's world, with the extra fun of some '90s Berlin intrigue. The end might be a bit head rattling, because it centres around some stuff that is only mentioned briefly at the start, but everything you need is in there to enjoy the book on its own...

  5. The Secrets Hours is absolutely fantastic, probably the best book in the series, and it's not actually a mainline #SlowHorses book. It may take me a couple of toots to explain just why it hit so well for me.
If you're a #SloughHouse book completist and have read all the shorts, you've had glimpses of a couple a story in Berlin with Molly and Jackson. The Secret Hours basically lets us in on the rest of it. Heron does it in a very clever way that sort of makes this 3 books in 1...

  6. "Slow Horses," season 2, has a new plot but is also building a super arc across the seasons, it seems; as it's not over. We're seeing more of Jackson Lamb in action, and he proves to be still having it as a spy. It's almost as if season 1 was meant to merely prepare the ground for him. I like how the show utilises those misfits and losers, to quote to opening song, which creates more relatable outcome than James-Bond-like super-spy stories. By the end of the day, we're only humans.

  7. "Slow Horses" is a spy show based on books I have never heard of. Slough House, a dead-end post in London ran by Jackson Lamb, where agents are being sent to as punishment, ends up as a part of a larger scheme. The main highlight for me was marvellous performance from Gary Oldman, whose comments would grant him a role in "Veep." The writing was good, with well-built and well-used Chekhov's guns. There are 4 more seasons.

  8. Finished Nobody Walks. Much better than Reconstruction. Theres more link to the Slough House books with some major characters with significant input. It had a bit more of the humour too. Overall just better writing, pace, some twists, some action.
Next up, The Silent Hours, I'm looking forward to this one a lot.
I have one other non-Slough House novel on the shelf, then am waiting on the Clown Town paperback.

  9. @mock well dark it gets, but not in a fun way. the second episode is all about Patrick's childhood. after #SlowHorses this is the second time I see #HugoWeaving in the role of an abusive authoritarian English father. both times very controlled, almost anemic, relying on menacingly slow speeches and rolled Rs, instead of violent outbreaks.

  10. The first thing I thought about when I saw Victor Gideon for the first time.

  11. #SlowHorses hat mich zu diesem Klick verleitet, aber Trance ist auch immer mal wieder ein Guilty Pleasure von mir. :p

  12. #ArcRaiders sucked me in and now my life is about finding "snitch scanners" and "surveyor vaults". :weird: Also it's carnival season in Cologne and in piss poor weather. So I avoid going outside even more than usual, lest I'll need to be weaving through crowds of drunken people.
Which reminds me that I watched #SlowHorses S04 with roomie. And while we enjoy the old fart's show a lot we both thought it was a slightly weaker script this season. #HugoWeaving was perfectly menacing though.

  13. @zabow Recuperate le stagioni 3 e 4 (non male) e vista la 5. La domanda è: perché hanno fatto diventare River così stronzo, antipatico e nevrotico? 🤔

  14. Just finished reading the latest #SlowHorses novel, Clown Town. Man o man this is a nasty one. Lamb is pissed that his joes keep getting killed, and that Taverner is more or less responsible. Dunno if this one will ever be televised. #recommended #bookstodon #MickHerron

  15. Diana Taverner: If there’s a hit on one of your team, you report it upwards. In this case to me!
Jackson Lamb: Ordinarily I would have done, but there were special circumstances.
    DT: Which were?
    JL: I couldn’t be arsed.

    😂

  16. Just finished Bad Actors. Very good! Possibly the best of the recent lot. That one presents some interesting challenges for a TV adaptation (though possibly fully intended ones, expect some one cut shenanigans)
After this there's a small short Standing by the Wall. I did pick up the 3 related novels (not strictly Slough House, but featuring the characters). Though The Silent Hours may be somewhat mis-categorised.

  17. Slough House done. It's a good one! It builds more on the previous stories than some of the others. You definitely wouldn't want to start with it (but there's no danger of that, only a psychopath would read books out of order right?)
Next up, Bad Actors. This is the last of the novels in paperback. I have one short after this. Clown Town paperback on preorder. There are three other books that are not strictly on the series, but are of the world. Guess I'll pick those up.

  18. The Catch, was OK, a satisfying conclusion to the triple agent storyline. The short (The Last Dead Letter Drop , from Dolphin Junction), was great though, you can't go wrong with Jackson and Berlin I guess!.
    Next up, Slough House

  20. Ten best TV/streaming drama series first seen in 2025

There are/were some absolutely stellar dramatic television and streaming series that either premiered or were first seen in 2025. Apple and Netflix dominate the list with eight of the Top 10.

As residents of “The Land of Enchantment” it is especially fun to see places we know in New Mexico on both Dark Winds and Plur1bus. With these two show being so well done, they generate a lot of pride, as well.

Kudos to all the shows listed and those associated with them.

    Peace!

  22. Not to be an Apple fanboy, but #AppleTVPlus will be available for free during the first weekend in January. If you're on the fence, now's your chance to binge some of the best streaming shows around. My recommendations include (but are certainly not limited to) #Severance, #SlowHorses, #BadMonkey, #Pachinko, #Silo, #Foundation, #ForAllMankind, #LessonsInChemistry, and of course, the great #TedLasso.
