  2. Review: The Paper – A Worthy Sequel for The Office.

Last month, my family went on vacation and while we were settling in, my brother and I found out that the T.V. in our cabin came with a Peacock subscription, something that we don’t have at home. And thus began our marathon through the show The Paper, a spinoff of The Office that follows a struggling, small newspaper company in Toledo, Ohio.

Overall, I would say that this show is a good sequel to The Office. While certainly not as edgy in its humor as its predecessor, The Paper still manages to capture a more toned-down version of that humor and has a similar overall vibe without feeling like a knockoff. While there are certainly parallels to be found between The Paper and The Office, there wasn’t anything that felt like it was being rehashed for a different decade.

The best place where we see this is in the characters. While the character Esmeralda could easily be compared to Michael Scott, she isn’t so like him that it’s a 1-1 comparison. Her business parter, Tim Key, could also be compared to Michael, but is still distinct enough to feel like his own character. Ned Sampson – the main character of The Paper – can’t really be compared to anyone in The Office, and others, like Mare, Nicole, and Detrick, while having some similarities to other characters, are still their own people.

Another place where we see a difference between The Office and The Paper is in the relationships. The majority of the conflicts in the show come from the relationships between the characters, particularly the romantic ones, and it would be easy to write the show in a way that rehashes the Jim/Pam or Dwight/Angela storyline in some way. However, The Paper‘s relationships, while bearing some resemblance to some of the relationships in The Office, are unique to the characters in them.

However, the romantic relationships are also where I have a bit of a problem with the show. In The Office, the relationship between Jim and Pam was a slow burn. They definitely had chemistry, but it took two seasons for Jim to confess his love for Pam, and another season before he finally asks her out. There’s a long period of yearning that makes it so much more satisfying when they finally get together and get married. Even in the Dwight and Angela storyline, as messed up as it is, it takes a while before they make it official. Meanwhile, in The Paper, we don’t really get that because they rush into it. By the end of Season 1, the two main romantic storylines are already in full swing. Ned and Mare confess their feelings for each other, and the characters Detrick and Nicole are already in a weird relationship. Though there’s a lead-up to the characters getting together, it feels rushed. It’s a bit of a nitpick, and the show can still add conflict to make things interesting, but I still think they could’ve added more episodes to build up tension or something.

    Until next time,

    M.J.

  5. Batman had a run of amazing animated shows over the years but this ain't one of them, in fact, it's the worst one. I didn't like season one, but season two just killed it for me. It's so bland, generic and everyone is a massive asshole, Batman included. It's no fun, villains are all drab and boring. Visionless, maybe animation got better but that's it. Just a waste of time and money to make this show.
