Synopsis (via Letterboxd):

Legendary New York poet Ed Saxberger’s forgotten works captivate an eccentric group of young creatives, reigniting his artistic passion. Their intrigue intertwines with the bewitching presence of actress Gloria.

My Thoughts:

Late Fame is a movie that asks the question “What if the Dead Poets Society found an actually “dead poet” and had him join the group?”

The movie introduces us to Ed Saxberger an aging man living in Downtown Manhattan who works at the post office and shoots pool with his friends in a dive bar in his free time.  Ed is approached on the street by a young man name Meyers who recognizes him as the author of a forgotten volume of poetry that Ed published in the 1970s when he was a member of the Downtown arts scene.  Meyers introduces Ed to “The Enthusiasm Society,” a group of young white men from wealthy families who are aspiring writers and joined together as a kind of literary salon.

While The Enthusiasm Society is extremely pretentious, Ed is naturally flattered by the attention and begins spending time with them.  Ed is particularly drawn to the one woman in the group, a charismatic actress named Gloria (Greta Lee wonderfully plays Gloria as a pastiche on Liza Minnelli in Cabaret).  The film follows Ed in the weeks leading up to a reading by The Enthusiasm Society as he struggles with writer’s block, faces tension with his working class friends when they learn of his literary past, and feels an unrequited love for Gloria.

This old-school quiet drama is an effective reflection on art, authenticity, and inter-generational relationships.  This is an excellent performance by Dafoe, one of the busiest actors in Hollywood in rare role as an “ordinary guy” in a restrained performance.  Greta Lee is also excellent as an actress hiding her real self behind artifice.
