I went downtown this morning out of sheer boredom and ended up coming home with a pile of really nice finds.

I decided to give this Sharp Pins record (which was in a used bin) a try, as over the last month, more than a few people told me I’d e joy it, and because I liked the small sample of stuff I tried online.

Really cool #lofi #indie #alternative pop that is a total “one man gang” effort by Chicago musician/artist Kai Slater.

This was recorded at both his home and personal studio in Chicago, and reminds me so much of the scruffy indie #90s music I grew up on, but there’s something extra here.
It’s also more jangly and #powerpop -ish than it is slacker rock. Along with the Sebadoh & Pavement vibes, there’s some Guided By Voices, some Beatles, even a little British Invasion shit.

Really cool record. 💥

An unusually LATE late-night (or in this case EARLY MORNING) spin.

Been having real trouble sleeping the last few weeks (for reasons far too boring to get into here), so I’m continuing my “rediscovery” of the latter-day, more #ambient Sam Prekop records with The Sparrow.

There were only 700 vinyl copies of this record made; a very quiet, abstract, melodic album birthed from Prekop’s modular #synthesizer .
It’s reminiscent of Eno’s ambient albums in that it’s very warm & atmospheric, with no vocals, & more of a sense of sound and environment than traditional “songs”.

There’s only 5 songs, but the album’s opening title track clocks in at just over 17 minutes, setting a tone for a very inviting & gentle listening experience.

“Every Night” is my favorite track here, for HOW gentle it is, like a song from a child’s mobile.

Some of my bought tracks are missing, and the crappy FAQ, last updated 4 months ago says:

"As we continue expanding and restoring the full catalog on Beatport, you may temporarily notice some tracks in your playlists showing as unavailable. We know how important playlist reliability is for DJs, and restoring this content is one of our highest priorities."

Did some of their drives die or something???

Oh well, it's a reminder for everyone not to trust the cloud alone....

JAMES WHITE AND THE BLACKS

Another great one from the “ #nowave ” pile from yesterday, one of a handful of James Chance-related records.

This takes the music made with The Contortions and reframes it through groovy dance music.
It’s still weird (because everything Chance did had a bit of weirdness to it), just a little more disco. 😂

Punks and art-punks at the time had a universal disdain & hostility for dance music.
Here, Chance gave them something they could get behind. Angular guitars, #avantgarde #jazz rhythms, all mixed over very danceable and hypnotic drums.

It was a very divisive album when it came out, but it’s now recognized as an underground cult classic.

It’s been great to hear all these Chance-related albums again these last few days. They just don’t pop up in my neck of the woods that often.

CONTORTIONS

1979 U.S. pressing

One of the 4 artists that appear on the previously posted No New York compilation, & one of a FEW James Chance-adjacent albums I picked up today.

Chance was a flamboyant saxophonist who was a very integral part of that late #70s /early #80s #nowave /#artrock scene in New York.

He and The Contortions played a very #avantgarde kind of punky #funk music, with flourishes of #jazz as well.

Buy was the original band’s ONLY record, coming a year AFTER that No New York compilation. Shortly after that, Chance became the star, and proceeded to have many different bands and projects over the years, including a “not at all the same” James Chance And The Contortions, which was just Chance and a bunch of other randoms.

While I was at my local shop this morning, a gentleman came in to sell about 30 of his records.
I ended up buying ALMOST all of them.

Along with the No New York compilation I posted earlier, it was all made up of #obscure #nowave , #punk , #postpunk , #newwave , #synthpop , and #experimental #artrock from the late #70s and early #80s .

This was one that I was very excited about. I’ve never owned a CLEAN original Tin Drum on vinyl before, and I’m SIKED.

I’m a big fan of Japan (and of David Sylvian) in general, and Tim Drum was the first album by Japan I ever heard.
I was so mystified by it, that I instantly set off on finding others, which lead me to working backwards towards Adolescent Sex, Obscure Alternatives, Quiet Life and Gentlemen Take Polaroids.

“Ghosts” is an incredible tune. It still gives me goosebumps.

The crown jewel of today’s finds from downtown; a PRISTINE original upgrade copy from my unlistenable beat-to-shit one, and one of the most influential compilations ever.

The NYC “no wave” scene didn’t last long, but Brian Eno was ALL about it, after witnessing some of the bands at an art space in Manhattan.

Eno wanted to record these very out of the box bands for posterity, and opted to do it in a very “live” off-the-cuff manner.

4 bands contributing 4 songs each, it is a pivotal document of what was happening in the late-70s NYC underground.

The Contortions (more on them later), Teenage Jesus And The Jerks, Mars, and D.N.A.; all envelope pushers in the best sense of the phrase.

I’ve been wanting an original CLEAN copy of this for a long time, so today was like Christmas.

Anyone else out there noticing that newer tv series shows on physical bluray discs are pre-encoded already to h264, and the quality is bad? Most bluray movies and older (pre-2024) bluray tv shows on discs were in the raw mpeg2video codecs and had the highest quality. I don't mind paying for my physical bluray media but if this is what the RIAA has in store for us then I'm out.
