The only thing funny about #RickAndMorty S9 E08, “Rickuiem Mort a Dream”, is that the one time actual #empathy shows up in the episode is when Morty, supposedly drained of every last drop of empathy by the alien parasite, takes the time to talk down a serial killer by walking a mile in his shoes. One psychopath to another, having a heart-to-heart. *Snort*

The rest of the episode spoofs the fact that most people don’t know the difference between empathy, compassion, and sympathy, and yet, they always know that it’s one of the most demeaning insults to be sympathized with, on the receiving end at least. Real compassion is so rarified it’s almost never seen outside the closest relationships. But empathy is literally taking the time to understand a person by putting yourself in their place, unbiased, without judgement, and most especially without the insult of sympathy.

But that’s not really what the episode is about. Someone must have pointed all this out in time for the episode tag, but too late in the production process to replace the episode altogether. The real point of the episode seems to be that alcohol suppresses empathy—like some kind of half-assed #alcoholism apology—but that’s not true either. Alcohol suppresses the Ego, so that only the emotional core of a person is visible—empaths become more empathic under the influence, and of course, emotional and empathic deficiencies become impossible to hide from others without the Ego. If you ever manage to get a narcissist drunk, you’ll see what I mean.

The moral of the story is that empathy is work. Empathy is doing the work. Empathy is getting your hands dirty by doing the work and not stopping until it’s done. And yes, empathy is walking away from alcoholics because we don’t need an apology—or want one—because the apology is just another transparent manipulation trying to worm its way into the lives of others. It’s a fucked-up disease, but there’s nothing we can do about it except allow ourselves to be hurt by it. The last thing they need is our sympathy. After all, that’s what the disease feeds on.
