#DarkMatter S2 E07, “The Pyramid” is yet another incredible episode. Hard-hitting from the first to the last, a necessary reminder on accountability that more peoppe need to hear. Emotionally rich, exploring all new layers of Leighton, Blair, Amanda, Ryan, Daniela, Jason, and Charlie. Circling in on a subject that can’t easily be approached directly. Even more quotable than Episode 3. By the end of it, at the cliffhanger, I was silently screaming “FUUUCK!”, but, y’know, I sure wanted to scream it out-loud to myself. I normally can’t stand cliffhangers, but this one was executed so perfectly.
I’m sad about the “Kinder” universe going full-authoritarian under its pandemic. But it was real nice to see at least one version of Leighton as an honest-to-God real Empath, instead of just someone who only uses shallow, surface-level empathy as a sort of fake-charisma just to manipulate people, the way psychopaths do but more effectively than any psychopath can. The thing that makes the other Leighton’s so evil and yet so lovable.
I also appreciated how this episode introduced us to the problem of identifying parallel universes in a sensible and consistent manner. Oh, and how it was the PI version of McNamara from the eternal-70s universe that got to go through the box first, before the federal agent version. Nice nod to the noir genre, there.

Very minor #spoilers ahead. I haven't gotten very far exploring the Deep North in #Valheim yet, but I'm loving it so far. It is very different from any other biome. Not nearly as deadly as the Ashlands, but the moose do not muck about.
Seals are also deviously hard to kill. Because they are very cute, and when you attack them, they just kind of lie there and cry. Broke my heart, and I haven't been strong enough to kill any more. -

The season 9 premier of #RickAndMorty, S9 E01 “There’s Something About Morty”, is a fantastic episode. But it sure has a different tone once you’ve seen the season finale and come to the inevitable conclusion quoted below.
You have “Evil Morty” going full-Astroboy. You have Rick C-137 going full-Looney-Tunes. And you have Morty Prime catching Evil Morty red-handed and calling him out for it. You can’t help but share in the victory as Evil Morty is carted off to Time Prison, no matter how many times you watch this episode. At least until you’ve seen the season finale and come to the inevitable conclusion quoted below.
But wait. Rewind a moment. What was it for, specifically, that Morty Prime caught Evil Morty red-handed? Emotional vulnerability. Trust in the veracity of the moment. Honesty.
Okay sure. Evil Morty is still a slime-bag sporting a villain accessory. But what does that make Morty Prime?

The weird thing about #RickAndMorty S9 E10, “Field of Dreams”, is that most of the episode is an anticipatory response to my specific reaction to Episode 8 outlined in the quoted post below—which is, of course, a well-documented and common pattern in #NarcissisticAbuse but not something you expect a TV show to pull off.
Imagine that. A whole alternate universe to explore the life and times of a “basic Rick” who has dealt with his alcoholism, attends AA, turns his life around, becomes a professor at MIT, and finds love in a healthy relationship. But even with a whole multiverse worth of mind-poisoning, “basic Rick” never manages to get Morty Prime back to Rick C-137. The episode makes it look like Jerry’s fault that this “basic Rick” universe goes full-Estate-Sale. But let’s face it. It was the inevitable consequence of the real point of the episode, and recurring theme of the series: Morty-Prime’s underlying psychological complex.
I’m not really sure what to call this pathological quest for a surrogate father, other than the Tom Sawyer Complex, maybe. Certainly that’s the name suggested by the episode description. Whatever you choose to call it, it’s more disturbing than either the Oedipus or the Electra complexes, albeit not by much; severe dysfunctions of the Syzygy (aka, the pairing of the anima and animus in Jungian psychology), all produce a similar full-body-emotional-revulsion when confronted head-on.
But yeah. That’s the deal. Now we know. And we can’t deny it. Every Morty is Evil-Morty. Not because of a specific villain accessory or any overt plan to conquer the multiverse for purely selfish reasons, but because he’s sick and chooses to remain sick.
God damn that’s fucked up.

#DarkMatter S2 E06, “What the Universe Is Made Of” is a really intense episode, in a lot of little ways. It’s kind of like the narrative is pure setup with very little resolution. But then there were also so many perfect moments it seems pointless to single any out. Just drop everything and watch it. Even if you’ve never seen the show before, just drop everything and watch it.
As a minor postscript, I think it’s interesting that the writers chose that particular interpretation of quantum mechanics to describe entanglement. Not exactly a popular one anymore. Or a canonical approach to the multiverse problem. I wonder if it’s a setup too? Like the story can only unfold if that one specific interpretation is the correct one, which is itself an unpopular choice in the physics community these days?

I finally finished "The Talisman" today and ended up loving the last two-thirds of the book! I still found Jack's voice WAY too mature for a 12.75-year-old and I'm not sure if it was Straub, King, or a combination but the absolute obsession with homosexuals-as-pedophiles and penises-as-threatening-objects was really odd though in a titillating way for me as a queer, I have to say.

Spoils the ending of the series, so if you want to read a kids series about why genocide is wrong that will definitely help reorient your moral compass while we all live thru fascism, definitely go read Animorphs first. As for whether or not I think it's appropriate for children, I was around 11 when this series came out and I think it's certainly appropriate for children around that age.

I’m not sure what I expected out of today’s new episode of #DarkMatter (S2 E05, “Love and Be Loved”)—the story of the alternate Jason stuck in the Prime universe with the federal agents, I suppose—but this Jason’s story was better.
What exactly is the right way to demonstrate to a new love-interest that you’re a traveller from another universe, though? It would have to be undeniable. But less ghoulish than taking them to your own grave.

Thinking it over, that was a pretty witty comment about Gary Mitchell. But only once you’ve seen the whole episode. Y’know. Uhura experiences full cosmic apotheosis and remains an unflappable badass. Gary Mitchell gets just a taste of strange energy and goes off the deep-end. And we could have seen it all coming if we had just been trapped at that 5-day poker game with them.

They managed to get retrocausality dead-right for this episode, alongside the slightly-more well-used sci-fi black-hole/white-hole duality and real relativistic predictions using black holes for time travel. Even in terms of theoretical physics, retrocausality is an opaque research topic, not at all accessible, so it’s pretty cool to see it used, and used correctly, limitations and all.

The only thing funny about #RickAndMorty S9 E08, “Rickuiem Mort a Dream”, is that the one time actual #empathy shows up in the episode is when Morty, supposedly drained of every last drop of empathy by the alien parasite, takes the time to talk down a serial killer by walking a mile in his shoes. One psychopath to another, having a heart-to-heart. *Snort*
The rest of the episode spoofs the fact that most people don’t know the difference between empathy, compassion, and sympathy, and yet, they always know that it’s one of the most demeaning insults to be sympathized with, on the receiving end at least. Real compassion is so rarified it’s almost never seen outside the closest relationships. But empathy is literally taking the time to understand a person by putting yourself in their place, unbiased, without judgement, and most especially without the insult of sympathy.
But that’s not really what the episode is about. Someone must have pointed all this out in time for the episode tag, but too late in the production process to replace the episode altogether. The real point of the episode seems to be that alcohol suppresses empathy—like some kind of half-assed #alcoholism apology—but that’s not true either. Alcohol suppresses the Ego, so that only the emotional core of a person is visible—empaths become more empathic under the influence, and of course, emotional and empathic deficiencies become impossible to hide from others without the Ego. If you ever manage to get a narcissist drunk, you’ll see what I mean.
The moral of the story is that empathy is work. Empathy is doing the work. Empathy is getting your hands dirty by doing the work and not stopping until it’s done. And yes, empathy is walking away from alcoholics because we don’t need an apology—or want one—because the apology is just another transparent manipulation trying to worm its way into the lives of others. It’s a fucked-up disease, but there’s nothing we can do about it except allow ourselves to be hurt by it. The last thing they need is our sympathy. After all, that’s what the disease feeds on.

Such a heartbreaking but ultimately positive episode of #DarkMatter today—S2 E04, “Stars, Hide Your Fires”—the best kind of tragedy, the one that edifies as much as it rends. Authentically representing #PTSD symptoms as major plot-drivers. Canonically establishing why “Jason Prime” is the Prime and “Jason Two” will always be second place, no less. So Crowleyan, through every moment down to the episode’s name.
Perfect moments: Amanda’s face when she dares Jason Two to try; Leighton owning up to being the ultimate charismatic supervillain we can’t help but love; Charlie’s analysis of the “Nighthawks” Edward Hopper painting; Daniela’s dogged, haunted run; Jason Prime’s continued flashbacks.

Still catching my breath an hour later after today’s new episode of #StrangeNewWorlds
It was a real heavy-hitter, morality gut-punching ethics, ethics countering with a left-hook. It got ugly. But ended in a draw if you can believe it. Y’know. Once they realized Ego was the real enemy all along.
The most shocking part of the episode, though, is how they canonically established exactly how and why Pike became the bedrock for Picard’s ethical foundation, and not at all Kirk, without even having to point it out. God damn.

Yeah, never mind what I said before. “A Perfect World” is a fantastic episode, it just covers so much ground that it has to be watched at least twice to take it all in. Pacing it so gently adds to the experience with each additional viewing, somehow.
I also really appreciate such an accurate representation of #PTSD from two perspectives: Amanda, living with it and managing the symptoms best she can, focusing on the seizing tendons in one hand and flashbacks; and Daniela, freshly traumatized and manifesting visible personality changes and self-destructive behaviour. It’s so rare for TV shows to get right.
This is a conversation I’ve had many times before, though. Whether travelling the multiverse literally, or just seeing all possible timelines in your mind, PTSD is guaranteed. Think about it.
