New eye-tracking #research from #Waseda University shows that our #brains act as "predictive engines," committing to a grammatical path long before a speaker provides all the words.

  10. Interested in #gamedev? For the #Waseda #GameLab I am organizing the workshop “Possibility Spaces”.

    Date: February 27, 2024
    Time: 14:00 pm - 17:00 pm
Venue: Waseda University, Main Campus, Building 11, Room 705

The workshop will explore the role of spatial design in games and its contribution to a ludic epistemology. How do games create and structure possibility spaces? What forms of knowledge emerge through spatial configurations in play?

    Full program at:

  11. There is a lack of space for sport in Tokyo. Team and ball sports in particular can only be practiced in a few places. Efficient use of space is therefore a must, especially for schools. One of my university's high schools, which is located right next to the campus, uses the schoolyard and roofs for team sports.

  12. #Autumn is gradually turning into #winter. The weather is still torn between the two.

(Autumn in #Tokyo is also #wedding season. Or at least the season for wedding photos. Seen in a park in #Waseda.)

  16. The Japan Times just interviewed me toward an article on bilingual education. Whenever I think my work is done in a field, requests come along and I find I have still more I've wanted to express.

I've been invited to give an informal presentation at Kōnan University in Nishinomiya, Hyōgo Prefecture next month. It will be my 100th different presentation topic. Many people have appreciated my photos and explanations, so I will show and tell briefly about 20 "Kyōto Temples, Shrines, and Festivals."

The [Uniqlo / Fast Retailing founder] Yanai Initiative, Waseda University, and UCLA have teamed up on a new Japan Past & Present site. My Profile in English with a focus on Japan is at japanpastandpresent.org/en/res and in Japanese (日本語版) at japanpastandpresent.org/jp/res
One of the main functions is a Japan Scholar Search using keywords, at japanpastandpresent.org/en/res

  21. Last was a fantastic talk by Hilary Holbrow on #gender role segregation and #inequality in the Japanese workplace at #Waseda University. Hilary uses a unique dataset to compellingly argue that improving gender representation in leadership roles alone is not nearly enough to change gender attitudes in the workplace. Highly recommend youtube.com/watch?v=Rae0JtoJ9j (7/7) #Japan

  22. First was an important talk by Mirna Safi on #migration and #inequality at #Waseda University. I particularly liked the examination of how migration status responses in surveys can often not match up with legal definitions youtube.com/watch?v=ECQlWziC2x (2/8)

  23. First was an excellent symposium on Vietnamese migrant workers in #Japan and the UK at #Waseda University with Sebastian Rumsby (migrant worker/employer power dynamics), Aimi Muranaka (Vietnamese IT professional career trajectories), and An Huy Tran (gender aspiration and circular migration). Highly recommend youtube.com/watch?v=BsV6GU_kse (2/5) #migration #migrants #work #Vietnam
