Orange mécanique de Stanley Kubrick

Alex DeLarge (Malcolm McDowell, 28 ans au tournage !) avoue 14 ans, à l’accueil de la prison où il est finalement emmené. Il est déjà sociopathe, délinquant et violeur en série, bien qu’il s’intéresse à la musique, notamment celle de « Ludwig Van », autrement dit Beethoven. La 9e Symphonie est son morceau préféré. Il l’écoute tout en fantasmant sur l’« ultraviolence ». Il s’est instauré le chef d’un gang de quatre, avec Pete, Georgie et Dim, tous moins malins que lui. Ce sont ses « drouguies » (copains en russe). En ados typiques, la bande use d’un jargon particulier, un argot anglo-manouche-russe inventé par Anthony Burgess, l’auteur du roman publié en 1962 d’où a été tiré le film. Son titre est tiré d’une expression cockney, « he’s as queer as a clockwork orange », autrement dit aussi bizarre qu’une orange-réveil.

Ils se vêtent d’une sorte d’uniforme, combinaison blanche de cricket, coquille protège-couilles apparente qui grossit leur anatomie, chapeau melon sur la tête et canne de gentleman à la main. Tout pour faire viril et se faire respecter ; tout aussi pour singer les codes de la bonne société anglaise. Alex, le chef, se met des faux cils pour accentuer l’acuité de son regard. Ils commencent rituellement les soirées par se murger au Korova Milkbar, caverne louche où les tables du sculpteur Allen Jones sont des filles à poil exhibant seins et touffe, et où l’on sert dessus du lait speedé à la drogue. Une fois mis en forme par la boisson et excités par le décor, le gang part en vadrouille. Ils tabassent un clodo puant et aviné dans un passage souterrain ; ils se battent à coups de canne avec la bande rivale de Billyboy, tout occupée à dépoiler une fille pour se la faire ; ils piquent une tire de sport iconique de la construction automobile anglaise, la Adams Brothers M-505 Probe 16, et foncent dans la nuit plein phares, obligeant les véhicules en face à verser dans le fossé ; ils s’arrêtent devant une maison isolée et futuriste intitulée « Home », symbole pour ces désocialisés de tout ce qu’ils détestent : la stabilité, la famille, la société.

C’est la maison de l’écrivain politique Frank Alexander (Patrick Magee). Ils s’y introduisent en feignant demander du secours à cause d’un accident. L’écrivain libéral qui y vit, intello isolé des réalités de la rue et tout de bienveillance humaniste envers la misère du monde, demande à sa femme d’ouvrir, ce qu’elle fait bien qu’elle se méfie. Elle a raison. Les quatre se ruent dans les pièces, tabassent le vieux, découpent la combi rouge en laine de la femme (Adrienne Corri), portée à même la peau pour faire plus sensuel, années 60, puis la violent à tour de rôle sous les yeux de l’écrivain hébété. L’auteur critique cette frange d’intellos qui jugent de tout en chambre, selon l’idéalisme philosophe, hors de raison face aux réalités sociales. Alex danse avant sa partie de « ça-va-ça-vient », comme il dit. Le sexe est un besoin et un jeu ; il profite des cons offerts et les prend. J’ai rencontré Anthony Burgess Wilson en 1972 à Paris, alors qu’il était venu parler de son livre à propos de la sortie du film de Kubrick. Il a réellement vécu cette scène, sa première femme ayant été violée par quatre GIs en 1944. Catholique, il a cru en 1959 avoir une tumeur au cerveau, ce pourquoi il s’est dépêché d’écrire. Ce n’était qu’un faux positif. Il n’est décédé qu’en 1993, à 76 ans, d’un cancer du poumon.

Le lendemain de cuite et de baise, Alex reste au lit et sa mère, avant midi, s’inquiète de ce qu’il n’aille pas à l’école. Alex est le fils unique de parents très moyens, elle travaillant à l’usine, et démissionnaires devant la jeunesse des années 60. Ils vivent dans un « bloc » d’appartements municipaux construits et décorés à la soviétique, par les Travaillistes au pouvoir, d’une grande fresque de prolétaires musclés nus, vantant la virilité communiste. La violence machiste imbibe toutes les idéologies. Évidemment, l’ascenseur ne marche pas et des déchets encombrent l’entrée. Lorsqu’il finit par se lever, en slip, Alex trouve devant lui son agent de probation, P. R. Deltoid (Aubrey Morris), fasciné par les jeunes mâles. Sa mère lui a laissé la clé pour qu’il lui parle. Il le questionne, le menace, le caresse, avant qu’Alex ne rompe l’entretien en évacuant la main sur sa cuisse. Deltoid, au nom des muscles virils de l’épaule, le met en garde contre la violence et sa pente dangereuse, mais Alex s’en fout, empli de l’énergie de la jeunesse, nihiliste parce que la société ne lui propose rien pour la canaliser.

Il s’habille avec recherche comme un dandy et va flâner chez le disquaire. Il aborde deux filles de son âge qui sucent des glaces en forme de bite, et les invite chez lui pour une partie de dedans-dehors. C’est alors une scène comique et culte que la baise endiablée de l’une, puis de l’autre, et on recommence, le tout en accéléré. Chaque fille qui se rhabille est aussitôt déshabillée et clouée sur le lit, où elle subit le va et vient d’Alex. Une véritable sex-machine. Au fond, elles subissent, mais elles aiment ça, c’est comme user d’un sextoy. La société tout entière vante le sexe, depuis les affiches sur les bus jusqu’aux cafés et au cinéma, dans les peintures et les objets à la mode. Pourquoi un ado en pleine possession de ses moyens se verrait-il refuser ce que toute cette ambiance érotique promet ?

Alex est au fond seul : pas de petite amie, pas de parents à l’écoute, pas d’école structurante, pas de vrais amis. Ses drougs sont des rivaux potentiels qu’il faut mater. Ils veulent voler plus et voir le butin mieux réparti entre eux. Alex est obligé de les châtier d’un coup de canne (évidemment sur les couilles), avant de les jeter dans le bassin – sauf Pete, le suiveur. Ils se réconcilient au Milkbar, où ils s’enfilent des laits speedés. Le soir venu, ils tentent le coup chez la femme aux chats (Miriam Karlin), une vieille originale fan de yoga et de félins, qui vit dans une grande maison à l’écart. Encore une satire de la société snob de son temps : elle collectionne les œuvres d’art érotique, dont un phallus géant en plastique qui joue les culbutos sur ses deux couilles. Satire de l’art « contemporain » aussi, obsédé de sexe et sans imagination autre que la reproduction brute. Alex tente le coup de l’accident, mais la vieille se méfie ; elle a lu l’histoire dans la presse et ne veut pas ouvrir. Mieux, elle téléphone à la police. Mais Alex escalade une façade à l’arrière, où une fenêtre est restée ouverte, et surgit devant elle, dans la pièce ornée de peintures érotiques de Cornelis Makkink. Ils se battent, et il aime ça. Elle brandit un buste de métal, tandis qu’il lui oppose le phallus érigé en plastique : un duel très symbolique entre la tête et la queue. Il finit par la défoncer de tout le poids du pénis, là aussi domination masculiniste symbolique. Elle en crève. C’est son premier meurtre et Alex, qui sort par la grande porte pour ouvrir aux drougs, se trouve assommé par eux avec une bouteille de lait, tandis que la police arrive. Comme quoi la violence engendre la violence, dans un mimétisme sans fin.

Alex, 14 ans, est condamné à 14 ans pour meurtre et envoyé à la prison. Là aussi, c’est une caricature. Le gardien-chef Barnes (Michael Bates) chargé de conduire les opérations d’entrée est un pantin discipliné qui ne cesse d’aboyer et de claquer des talons. Un vrai robot au service de la violence systémique de la maison de redressement (qui ne redresse rien). Alex, adolescent au milieu d’adultes, est courtisé par les pervers et se réfugie auprès de l’aumônier, lui aussi tenté, mais tenu par sa foi. Dans la Bible, qu’il lit pour se faire bien voir, le jeune garçon découvre les scènes violentes et érotiques de l’Ancien testament et fantasme sur les meurtres, les viols et les tortures. Si l’étalage de la violence incite à la violence, pourquoi ne pas « interdire » la Bible et le Coran ?

Deux ans plus tard, Alex a 16 ans. Le ministre de l’Intérieur (Anthony Sharp) visite la prison, où il veut trouver des volontaires pour une nouvelle technique de réhabilitation sociale par la psychologie comportementale. Alex lui convient, assez jeune pour que ça marche, et assez cultivé pour offrir une bonne image à la presse. S’il suit bien le traitement Ludovico de deux semaines, il sera libéré comme réinsérable. Le conditionnement psychologique est issu des travaux du russe soviétique Pavlov, celui des réflexes conditionnés, comme des travaux de la CIA dans les années 50 avec le projet MK Ultra. Il s’agit d’imposer au garçon des images violentes et sexuelles après lui avoir administré des médicaments donnant la nausée. Il est forcé de regarder, des écarteurs de paupière étant fixés sur son visage et ses membres attachés. On retrouve l’inévitable séquence de tout réalisateur juif (comme Kubrick) sur les atrocités de l’Allemagne nazie. Dommage collatéral, la musique diffusée avec les images immondes n’est pas du Wagner (ce qui aurait été logique) mais du Beethoven. Alex se voit alors privé de son compositeur préféré, pris de vomissements et de maux de tête lorsqu’il en entend les notes.

Le Dr Brodsky (Carl Duering) est au final très content du résultat, et le ministre aussi. Il a enfin trouvé la solution pour désengorger les prisons, faire taire l’opinion, et redresser les jeunes délinquants. Il présente Alex à la presse et aux institutions. Le garçon ne riposte pas lorsqu’un acteur l’insulte, pas plus qu’il ne peut toucher les seins nus de la fille qui se présente devant lui. Il est immunisé par son conditionnement. L’aumônier proteste en disant qu’il n’y a pas de moralité sans choix et que c’est déshumaniser un être que de le priver de cette liberté. C’est le message de l’auteur, d’ailleurs, dans la seconde partie.

Il considère, comme George Orwell dans 1984, que les méthodes soviétiques et CIA de conditionnement humain sont de nouvelles armes totalitaires. Depuis le péché originel, l’humain est pécheur, violent, anti-social, mais il a été créé ainsi, cela fait partie de sa nature. Ce péché originel a été « choisi » par l’homme en dévorant le fruit interdit offert par sa femme, elle-même tentée par le diable serpent. Le serpent était l’animal favori d’Alex avant la prison. Animal à sang froid qui ne parle pas, il était le parfait « ami » du garçon. Cette nature violente de l’humain est donc, selon la Bible, de son fait. Il doit désormais travailler, faire des efforts, accoucher dans la douleur, mais il a son libre-arbitre. Cette possibilité de choix est une qualité qui lui permet de bâtir sa propre vie. S’il n’a plus le choix, il devient « mécanique », certes non-violent, ni violeur, mais aussi incapable d’aimer le beau comme la musique, ou de s’attacher à quelqu’un. Il n’est plus qu’un robot qui fonctionne, soumis et discipliné, mécanique sans vitalité.

C’est justement le cas d’Alex, livré désormais sans défense à quiconque dans la jungle sociale. Ses victimes deviennent ses bourreaux. Ses parents ont « adopté » un locataire, qui occupe sa chambre ; le clodo tabassé le reconnaît et invite ses compères à venir le griffer ; les flics qui interviennent sont deux drougs qu’il a humilié, Georgie et Dim, et qui se vengent ; la maison à laquelle il demande assistance après avoir été frappé et à demi-noyé est le Home de l’écrivain devenu paraplégique à cause des coups, et dont la femme violée est morte… Lui aussi va se venger, en intello incapable de relations directes. Il va le faire baigner par son garde du corps, le nourrir, l’héberger – et lui infliger la 9e de Beethoven à plein volume alors qu’il sait que cela lui répugne désormais. Au point qu’Alex se résout au suicide en se jetant de l’étage par la fenêtre.

A l’hôpital, car le jeune Alex est comme le chiendent, indestructible, il est réparé et subit des tests psychologiques. Le choc l’a déconditionné (ou peut-être une opération au cerveau, c’est assez flou), et il a retrouvé tout son appétit de vivre : libido au vent, agressivité retrouvée, appétit de musique. Il est guéri et le ministre de l’Intérieur, critiqué par toute la presse, en est ravi. Satire des gouvernements qui se moquent bien des gens mais suivent « l’opinion », ce qui n’est pas la même chose. Pour contrôler le garçon (appelez-moi Fred, je peux vous appeler Alex ?), il lui apprend que l’écrivain gauchiste Alexander a été « mis à l’abri » et lui offre un poste bien rémunéré de porte-parole du parti conservateur.

Critique radicale des dérives libérales, libertaires, libertariennes de la société, qui montent depuis les années 50, tout est promotion de la violence (pourtant monopole d’État légitime) et du sexe (hors de toute morale, même celle de la décence commune). Au fond, le message est celui du clodo tabassé par la jeune génération de nihilistes sans futur : « C’est un monde infect parce qu’il n’y a plus ni loi ni ordre ; c’est un monde infect parce qu’il laisse les jeunes s’en prendre aux vieux, comme tu le fait. Oh, ce n’est plus un monde pour un vieil homme. Quel genre de monde est-ce, au juste ? Des hommes sur la Lune, des hommes qui tournent autour de la Terre, et plus personne ne se soucie de l’ordre et de la loi ici-bas. » Le progrès ? Il n’est que technique, jusqu’à techniciser la société. C’est ce que prône le gang des techno-fascistes autour de Trompe, le redressement moraliste par le contrôle absolu des puissances de calcul et des réseaux de communication.

Le film a été « interdit » durant 27 ans au Royaume-Uni, tant la société moraliste pensait que cela inciterait les jeunes à la violence. Il semble qu’ils n’aient pas besoin de ça pour se défouler, après les matchs de foot et contre les immigrés. D’ailleurs, si le spectacle de l’agressivité incite à imiter, pourquoi continue-t-on à passer images, films et documentaires à longueur d’année sur les atrocités nazies, les camps de la mort et autres charniers ? Est-ce vraiment « pédagogique » de montrer l’horreur, ou est-ce inciter à faire pareil ? Une question que les intellos bien-pensants ne se posent manifestement pas. Hypocrisie sociale, une de plus. Anthony Burgess et Stanley Kubrick s’y attaquent avec vigueur et ironie, ce qui fait du film un inactuel (on dit « culte » pour faire branché).

Here in the Philippines, there was a lot of pre-release buzz that Manila would appear in the movie and so many local film buffs got excited. The movie eventually grossed over $400 million worldwide through theaters and a lot of people enjoyed its high-quality visuals, intense battles and the special attention to detail invested on the size and scale of the locations. #10 Shallow Focus is a Disease in Movies – There is a new trend that has influence the production of movies in Hollywood (AKA Commiewood) for many years now and it has literally become a disease which made the viewing of movies undesirable. The disease is shallow focus which occurs when the area of sharpness in front of a camera lens is very narrow which results in blurry backgrounds. Shallow focus is being abused in modern-day filmmaking and it is only getting worse.
