The plot mainly serves to wind up Marlowe for the devastating finale (but once it happens, the mask of casual insouciance returns, which I believe features the only music cue that is not a variation of the film's theme song, co-written by John Williams). All in all, an excellent film.

Do note, the film features a lot of casual and not-so-casual misogyny (not so out of place for a 50+ year old film, but something to consider nonetheless).

I don't know what it is, but I love the sun-drenched, slightly scuzzy, pretty weird look at late 60s and early 70s LA you see in many of the movies and TV shows from that era. I say this since I watched Robert Altman's film The Long Goodbye (1973) for #MovieClub last night, which is an adaptation of a 50s Raymond Chandler hardboiled detective story set in 1972-73 (screen play by the late, great Leigh Brackett).
