The Odyssey, 2026 - ★★★★

At its best: captivating, epic and jaw-dropping. The atmosphere, effects and Odysseus’ story are remarkable cinema. Ithaca is a letdown, with plodding subplots and characters I just had no reason to care about, and a disappointing end. Most departures from Homer were for the worse, but didn’t stop an amazing core shining through.

Flight to Mars (1951) - 2.5/5, would have been a lot better without the chauvinism

The Messenger (1999) - 3.5/5, too long but thoughtful commentary on religion and politics

Big Fish (2003) - 4/5, I always get misty-eyed at the end
