  1. The revitalized #DirectorsVillage isn't officially open yet, but we were treated to an advance 4K screening of #Akira (which I've never seen on the big screen). Kodansha manga editor Takeshi Katsurada joined us in person to introduce the iconic anime to a packed house before watching it with us! #letterboxdfriday #LastFourWatched 🪓🤠🏍️🛗 #cinemastodon

  2. Only four this week because I've been busy, which is also why I forgot to post this yesterday.
Anyway, it's three new releases (which I saw all on the same day, by the way), and one movie that I wanted to watch again to see if my rather low rating would still stand.

Coyote vs. Acme — 4 stars
The Dog Stars — 2½ stars
One Night Only — 3½ stars
The Shape of Water — 3 stars

  3. Happy #LetterboxdFriday !

As usual, my October is packed, so I've started my Halloween watching early. This year, it's all the Halloween movies, starting with the only one I've previously seen.

As for new releases, Onslaught was easily the best of the day yesterday. Review to come soon.

The Sun Never Sets is one of the most baffling and frustrating "Sundance indies" I've ever seen. Excellent Dakota Fanning performance, though.

The Uprising...well, I'll have a review of that, too.

  4. George Miller's surprisingly sincere exploration of storytelling, connection, and companionship

Wes Craven’s meta-commentary on horror tropes and sequels, now numbering several Craven-less sequels

    Rinse repeat

  6. Three years on the watchlist, finally watched it last night. It was good. Not 'worth three years of anticipation' good — just good. Something happens to a thing when you defer it that long. #LetterboxdFriday #film

  7. Bit of a wuxia-fest for my recent birthday which was super fun, and this time of year I'm always tempted to binge Wong Kar-Wai's filmography.

  9. No reviews from myself recently but a string of very enjoyable films including two that just missed this week, Tron and Tron: Legacy.

  10. Psycho (4.5 stars) - Really great, only loses half a star for the end when the psychiatrist explains everything.
Pinocchio Unstrung (2 stars) - Just... not my thing.
Triangle of Sadness (3.5 stars) - Really liked some parts of this, didn't care for others!
The Secret World of Arietty (4.5 stars) - Delightful.

  11. #LetterboxdFriday

KPop Demon Hunters (2025): Seen for the third time, still one of the best animated films of recent years (and the best Musical film in even more years). 4/5

Sherlock, Jr (1924): The story could be better, but that my children loved a 102-year-old film is really something special. 4/5

Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma (2026): Felt a bit like a hybrid of a David Lynch movie and "Scream". Very unusual and entertaining. 4/5

  12. Happy #LetterboxdFriday ! My #LastFourWatched is mostly 3.5 stars:

Redline (2009) - 3.5/5, simplistic story but spectacular animation

Pushing Hands (1991) - 3.5/5, great premise but a little jumbled

A Different Man (2024) - 3.5/5, another great premise but too abstract for me

Battle of the Worlds (1961) - 3/5, Claude Rains meets Antonio Margheriti

    Happy viewing!

    HARLAN COUNTY USA 🇺🇸

Seminal documentary about a coal mining strike with some marvellous folk music

Strange story of a murderer released on probation who opens a barber shop. Yes, I am underselling it with that description

    ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

    CHARISMA 🇯🇵

Slippery, unpredictable, somewhat dreamlike Kiyoshi Kurosawa drama

The Horseman on the Roof - Rambling swashbuckling historical drama by Jean-Paul Rappeneau, who died this week at 92. Atcghdctimdcut was the most expensive French film ever made. It’s all over the place, and includes Olivier Martinez trying to save Juliette Binoche from cholera by [peers over glasses] stripping her naked and vigorously rubbing her. There’s a good cat in it but the film is a bit dull, all said.

I Want Your Sex - This new Gregg Araki is such a fun, exuberant film. Cooper Hoffman is a hapless sub dominated by Olivia Wilde as a haughty artist. It’s very funny, well written, AND has a blooper reel during the end credits. So enjoyable.

The Kreutzer Sonata - Very early Rohmer. Essentially a silent film with a voiceover. Based on a Tolstoy story. Men are trash, 1956-style. Featured Godard smoking and looking damn cool, and Rohmer being tall in a good suit.

The Unfaithful Wife - Mid-period Chabrol that’s being given a theatrical rerelease. Stéphane Audran is gorgeous in this icy-cold murder tale.
