  1. This week's #NewBooks at the library: Three more books from our January clearance sale
    - Jellyfish Age Backwards: Nature's Secrets to Longevity by Nicklas Brendborg, published by Hodder & Stoughton.
    - Ancestors in Evolutionary Biology: Linear Thinking about Branching Trees, a more technical volume by Ronald A Jenner, published by Cambridge University Press as part of their series of Systematics Association Special Volumes (@SystAssn).
    - #Acrocanthosaurus Inside and Out by Kenneth Carpenter, published by the University of Oklahoma Press.

  2. This week’s Fossil Friday is a tooth of Sandalodus, a Carboniferous shark. This animal was swimming in the tropical seas that covered Alberta roughly 350 million years ago. At that time, much of Alberta lay under a warm, shallow sea - more like the Bahamas today than the prairies we know now!

This specimen was found near Bragg Creek in southern Alberta. It is APS 1985.020 and was collected by Geoffrey Barrett.

  8. 🦅🐘 Researchers explain that the #energy required for a giant #bird to take off would exceed the metabolic limits of avian #biology.

Modern bird #anatomy evolved for efficiency and lightweight strength which creates a hard ceiling on how large a flying #animal can become.

  14. 🐍🧬 Researchers analyzed the genomes of over 1000 #squamate species to understand the rapid diversification of #snakes.

The findings suggest that snakes evolved up to 3 times faster than #lizards to develop their unique sensory systems and flexible bodies. The shift allowed them to survuve in diverse environments after the loss of their limbs over 100 million years ago.

  19. 🦖🦴 Scientists are debating whether T. rex arms shrunk to avoid being bitten by other hunters, or to allow for a more massive skull.

The small limbs might have been a biological tradeoff that provided the #dinosaur with a more powerful bite and stronger neck muscles.

  20. I love this bit of detail!

Some of you may be familiar with scientists giving their discoveries whimsical names. For example there is the INDY gene, short for "I'm Not Dead Yet", a longevity gene. (Look it up!)

Here's another one documented on a roadside sign...

Funcusvermis was named after the song "Funky Worm" by the Ohio Players. 🙂

Note that the actual song appears to be a novelty story set to music.

  21. Another video from Paleo 2026 has been posted! Dr. Jon Noad explains different often-overlooked trace fossils and uses comparison with living traces to show how these fossils are more numerous than we think - we just need to know what to look for.

  22. This week's #NewBooks at the library:
    - I bought a bargain second-hand copy of The Rise and Fall of the Ediacaran Biota, published by the Geological Society
    - To prove it's not all hardcore science here, I visited my friend's new bookshop in Brixham in Devon and snagged myself a copy of SenLinYu's Alchemised, published by Michael Joseph. If you're in the area, go check out Into the West Bookshop, tell them The Inquisitive Biologist sent you.
    - Another second-hand bargain was Cold-Water Corals: The Biology and Geology of Deep-Sea Coral Habitats (yes, these exist!), published by Cambridge University Press.

  27. 🐴🐘🐪 This tooth survived the end of the Ice Age in a gravel pit. 🦷

Found 5 miles east of Montevideo, this lower horse molar may have belonged to one of the last Equus roaming Minnesota before their disappearance from North America. It’s tooth 10 in the 12 specimen project tracing Minnesota’s Ice Age horses.

Follow the whole 12 tooth journey in Lost Bones #4 thru the link in my bio.
