🐴🐘🐪 This tooth survived the end of the Ice Age in a gravel pit. 🦷
Found 5 miles east of Montevideo, this lower horse molar may have belonged to one of the last Equus roaming Minnesota before their disappearance from North America. It’s tooth 10 in the 12 specimen project tracing Minnesota’s Ice Age horses.

🦥🐴🐘🐪 #FossilFriday — A lower horse molar (SMM P2025.8.7) from Olmsted County is specimen 9 of 12 headed for radiocarbon dating.
Olmsted County has produced multiple Ice Age finds over the years, including several mammoth tusks and both mammoth and mastodon teeth from county gravel deposits—many of which I’ve posted about previously.

Horses vanished from North America ~10,000 years ago. So why are these fossilized teeth turning up across the Midwest
A friend found the infamous “black tooth” back in 2018 — and now we’re waiting for the radiocarbon dates. No dates have previously been documented!
Will they point to the Ice Age, or something pre‑European contact? 💬 Share your thoughts — what do you think the dates will reveal?

🐴 #FossilFriday — Horse molar (SMM P2020.7.34)❤️🔥. Specimen 7 of 12 for radiocarbon dating — another incredible Ice Age find from my good friend Bill in 2018 — New Ulm, Minnesota.
Every one of these teeth and bones helps us answer a bigger question: Were Ice Age horses still roaming Minnesota later than we thought?
I’ve added new notes on Substack:

👇 What do you think this molar’s age will come back as — Ice Age or more recent?

Among the material recovered from this layer were a horse molar (specimen #6) and an horse incisor, found alongside other late‑Quaternary remains within the same sedimentary zone.

🐴 #LostBones 🐘🦥🐪 For #FossilFriday, a new series: 12 horse teeth from across Minnesota, each one headed for radiocarbon dating to finally pin down when these animals moved across the state’s post glacial landscape.
Specimen #1 comes from a private collection near Little Sauk, Minnesota — a single horse tooth pulled from a skull found in the black marl of the Sauk River.
How do they fit into the lives or paleo-Minnesotans?

Mustang Mare, Grulla (Horse Country by CollectA)A symbol of the old west and the untamable American spirit, the mustang is a feral breed of horse that hasn’t always been a beloved icon of the United States. Upon the settling of the American west these free-roaming horses were heavily persecuted for competing with livestock for food. Although protected in 1971 by the Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act (for being “living symbols of the […]

The original specimen—now in a private collection—is about 33cm (13 in) tall at the shoulder. It is one of two known specimens from the Fossil Butte Member at Fossil Butte National Monument, Wyoming.
I’ll be posting more about North American equids in the Midwest the next few months.

Happy #FossilFriday! 🐴🐘🐪💀 This gorgeous horse mandible comes from Brown County, Minnesota. It was collected by a friend of mine under permit in a state park earlier this year. Running a genetic stop sign accelerates oxygen metabolism and energy production in #horses
Beginning as early as 5000 years ago and lasting until just around 150 years ago, horses were integral to human societies. Their capacity for intense exertion led to their being used as everything from beasts of burden to elite racers. This athleticism is largely driven by increased oxygen consumption rates due to muscles full of mitochondria. #Castiglione et al. found that horses evolved to cope with the increased oxidative burden brought about by mitochondrial activity through the evolution of a single point mutation that increases oxidative phosphorylation while simultaneously mitigating the consequent oxidative stress. —#SachaVignieri #Science #Equus #Equuscaballus #GianniMCastiglione
