    Whalebone (Delphi Spiderwood)

I caught slivers of the words the doctor whispered to Whalebone. Miscarried. Unfortunate, but perhaps for the best given my condition. I thought about that for a long time. What was my condition? Was it of the mind or of the body? I couldn’t say.

    Resting Place

This story details the ‘birth’ of MISERY during the death of her father(s)

Content warning for mildly vidid description of the decay process

Something terrible occurred. The ending of the situation resulted in the bodies of several princes to be dumped at Discaria della’Inviolata landfill.

    piled atop each other,

the bodies were left to rot,

    entering livor mortis,

their sacred blood spills onto the garbage where they had been dumped.

Ashuton’s body was face down, and from the open gash on his abdomen, a pink egg fell out.

Under them this pink egg rests,

    soft-shelled,

    absorbing all of the rot.

    * * *

The bodies have strangely entered the decomposition common amongst all eukaryotic organisms, perhaps this is because they died in their human forms.

    the bodies expand and bruise,

their bodies breaking down from within,

    this doesn’t happen usually.

    Usually.

their mouths, noses and eyes leak black liquid,

    “purge fluid,” humans call it,

it is that but for a dragon it is something extra mixed in:

Substance--the goo they were born with, responsible for helping them shapeshift, the liquid humans kill for.

days, weeks, months, how long had it been?

portions of their bodies had liquified,

the egg was drenched in death,

their human forms were beyond self reconstruction at this point.

portions of their bodies had formed Adipocere,

the wax forms itself as bumpy scales along their exposed bones,

and their bodies, despite decaying, were slowly shifting into draconic states,

    horns potrude from their heads,

    tails form,

their skeletal hands regrow their flesh,

with pieces of scales jutting out

at this point, the egg was ready to hatch.

    amongst all the blowflies,

    cicada nymphs,

    and surrounded by her fathers,

she takes her first peek of the outside world.

    she slithers out the shell,

    coiling around Ashuton,

she waits patiently until her arms and legs can work.

days later, she is still coiled around her father.

by now, his human body is gone, replaced with his biped draconic form.

    her talons, black

    her eyes, yellow

    her soft scales, pink

but inside, a virus runs rampant.

she waits patiently for them to wake up and take her to their new home.

Cicadas do not form nor are attracted to dead bodies. They are, however, attracted to Karrucci dragons.

The princes who got killed in a battle were Ashuton, Carlotto (Charlie), Rico, Chamyou, Che, Zaccari (Zack), Tommaso, Armando, Mwanu, Meep, Siletero and Massimo. The person who killed them took pieces of their horns and dumped their bodies.

It should also be noted, a dragon can discard their human form at any time. They will just be locked into a dragon form while their body recreates the human form from within.

this story is new, unlike the other stories surrounding Misery.

    The landfill is this place

    Doll’s Grimoire

Our hero girl had a legion of dolls on shelves

    Only room for one poster

Plenty of room for a hundred eyes staring back

    A knock on her door

    “Your food is ready.”

These dolls doubled as a defense

    Nobody entered her room

    2.

‘She from another world’ runs down the hall, big footsteps following behind

The booming sounds get louder, almost matching her speed

She lunges at her bedroom door, gets back onto her feet and shuts it

One click of the lock, and she is protected

There’s loud banging on the door

shaking the room, shaking the dolls

Her chest heaves as a voice says “those dolls won’t save you forever.”

    For now, they are enough

    3.

Our hero girl happens upon a grimoire in the family attic, held by an old Ichimatsu doll

its eyes seemingly watched her—she had to test it by moving around a lot

she found the doll while dusting, at the behest of her mother—or shall we say, her mother’s thrown shoe

Our dumb hero opens the book and is pulled through

The dolls’ grimoire takes her to the world bathed in lava

Black spires and pillars dot the landscape

She was lucky enough to land on one

    “What is this??”

She hugs the pillar, eyes shut, “HELP!”

Her pleas are met with a loud groan coming from the planet

A creature slowly rises, lava sliding off its head and trickling off its horns

    A vantablack dragon.

“I see my book has led another snack to me. It’s been ages.”

“Sn—snack?!?” she flinches at the thought.

He introduces himself, “I am Swallowhold. That’s what the last human called me. I have many names, some unpronounceable, some beyond your tongue’s ability to speak it. I am what humans call a Wishgiver.”

He holds out his paw her her to sit on but she can feel the heat emanating off it.

    She shakes her head.

“Alright. I’ll make this quick. I will give you power to escape your unfortunate, pitiful life.”

He opened his maw as the glittering fireflies, power personified, drifted into it.

He closes it shut, feasting on a snack that was a thousand years in the making, “Ah, such lovely power.”

His eyes lock onto her, “you are potent.

    You have drive.

    You have principle.

I am elated that my book was found by you.”

There’s a knock on the door again

    “The food is ready.”

“Why don’t Ya come in and get it?”

She retorts with a snort. “Hell no.”

No one entered Our hero’s dorm

Not even Her from another World

Her roommate didn’t mind the dolls

She would sit there in bed, reading about fish anatomy for class.

Things were different now, because of the Wishgiver

    Things were better

but in the cobwebs of Our Other Girl’s mind, papa’s eyes were still watching

    the cobwebs are pulled back

    (something fresh still lives here)

    and he reaches forth

“why don’t you get your head out of those dolls and PAY ATTEN—“

in the form of an intrusive thought, Our Other Girl swipes her arm backward, glass shard in her hand cutting him

Our Hero girl is taken out of her daze and drops her books

Her roommate glances at her, then goes back to reading.

    Sinclair takes a deep breath.

  20. A Post Apocalyptic Siren’s Song

A soft humming rode the wind—strange, yet familiar. The tune teased his memory, as if it had followed him since childhood. He had never seen a person—or any creature—linked to the sound. For years, he dismissed it as a sound from the old power lines, long abandoned in this changed world. But today, the humming was different. There was a proper voice associated with it, if only he could find where that voice was coming from. He moved like a shadow through ruins he’d never dared to […]
