  1. First West Nile Virus Death of 2026 Reported in LA County - Public Health Urges Residents to Take Steps to Prevent the Spread of Mosquito-Borne Illness

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has confirmed the first local death due to West Nile virus for the 2026 mosquito season. A resident of the San Fernando Valley was hospitalized and died from neurological illness caused by severe West Nile virus.

"This tragic loss is a reminder of the serious threat posed by mosquito-borne diseases, including West Nile virus and dengue. Everyone can take simple steps to reduce their risk. These include using insect repellent, getting rid of standing water where mosquitoes breed, and making sure windows and door have tight-fitting screens without holes or tears. Small actions like these can make a big difference in preventing illness.”

  2. "DEATH VALLEY, Calif. — A 68-year-old French visitor died Monday, Aug. 17, after he and a traveling companion became stranded on a remote road in Death Valley National Park.

Pierre Michel Formosa, 68, and his travel companion, both from France, were traveling on West Side Road when their vehicle became stuck in mud near Queen of Sheba Mine Road. With no other vehicles in the area, the men began walking across the salt flats toward Badwater Road to seek assistance. Temperatures reached 116°F that day. After about 1.3 miles, the man was unable to continue. His companion continued toward Badwater Road, where he eventually received assistance from a passing motorist and reported the incident at the Furnace Creek Visitor Center shortly after 2 p.m."

    Good morning! 🌅🌅🌅
The #Mind is a #Manifestation. Things appear in the space. Things disappear. For humans we call it #death. The space remains. If the "I" has any existential value and not just appearance value, then we are space. That is the only all pervaded. It must be God. 1/3

  5. For the last months of her life I had to carry her almost everywhere, and she was almost 15 kg, and my arms would give out long before we got home.

Now she is 300 grams and I can hold her in one hand, and somehow that is heavier than she ever was.

Not physically, and I don't really know how else to put it.

    I miss her ❤️

Sorry for writing about this so much this week, I think and hope this is the last one.

  9. When Lizzie Siddal, wife of the Pre-Raphaelite artist and poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti died, Rossetti was so distraught he took the only copy of his poems and wrapped it in her beautiful red hair as she lay in her coffin. She was buried in Highgate Cemetery, but seven years later - realising he'd buried some of his best verse - Rossetti allowed himself to be persuaded to have her exhumed. The coffin lid was levered off to reveal that Lizzie's splendid hair had grown, with metres of it filling the casket. She was also, apparently, almost perfectly preserved, with death's pallor granting her a phantom beauty. Rossetti couldn't bear to be at the exhumation and it's possible this story was invented by his less-than-honest business manager Charles Augustus Howell. You can read about this story and many other equally strange ones in my new book 'Atlas Gothica: An Alternative Guide to the World's Most Curious Destinations' (Hachette).
